I am having trouble finding a good paint scheme for basing sand. Perhaps Dakka can help me?

Try doing a heavy Devlan Mud wash over the sand. Comes out really nice.

Here's my Dread using just sand glued to the base with a Devlan Mud wash. You can really see the difference between the base and the terrain it's standing on, which is unpainted sand.

If so, it's tough because it doesn't come with any washes. Pick up a couple of washes if you can, they make things so much easier.

With what you have, try this:
- basecoat with Undercoat Black
- Overbrush with Calthan Brown
- Overbrush with Tallarn Flesh

Or:
- basecoat with Calthan Brown
- Overbrush with Tallarn Flesh
- Really light drybrush with White

I used
- basecoat with scorched brown
- overbrush with graveyard earth
- drybrush with bleached bone
- and last wash with devlan mud (i have more than just the colours from the pack )

Awesome! Any pictures so we can see how it turned out?

I was under the impression that sand already comes pre-painted in a sandy colour.

It does, but it looks more like sand glued to a base than actual ground. Even just a quick shade and highlight does an amazing job of making it convincing.
