Hi

I have been looking at building some decent terrain and have found what i want in the Dark Eldar Codex really, and wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas how to make it or similar, original and primarily year 40000 looking scenery.

I currently have a GW church ruin, which is good quality and simple, but so uninspiring i havent even bothered to paint it yet. All the cities of death stuff is a lot better than anything you could buy in the past, but to me its just doesnt look as exciting and different i would imagine my terrain to be.

The terrain i like the look of is from the first page of all the dark eldar photos in the codex which has a group of incubi at the front. the big green tower with red core, with bits of ruined tower scattered around. I think it actually looks like something from the far future, on an alien planet.

I was thinking of making the tower bit out of 5mm PVC foam board and cut out the bits, and shape the edges to make it look all weathered. I have played around shaping 3mm PVC foam board into some of the sections that have fallen off. I like working with it, can just use polystyrene cement, its cheap and easy to paint and is tough as nails. I was thinking of changing the tower in the background slightly to give a bit of an improvised crows nest.

I am not sure how to do the center column thought, if any suggestions?

Anyone got any decent futuristic alien terrain they have made? I want this for my Dark Eldar raids, also thought of doing some terrain with a crashed section of a Dark Eldar big space ship, like a shard of one of the building in the commoragh artwork.

but any ideas welcome, thanks in advance.

This is what he's talking about:

When I was little, we had a fish tank with some clear tubing. You might be able to find something there or in plumbing.

I don't know about tinting it red, though. I've never tried anything like that.

painting the inside with red ink can tint it red like that. Alternatively I'm sure you can find a supplier who sells red tubes.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I actually just finished my Nid and Ork terrain and I'm now working on Necron. Dark Eldar will most likely be a summer terrain project for me so I'm interested to see what you come up with. Maybe I'll be able to bounce some ideas your way.

You could also look for hamster tubes, I'm sure they come in any color you could want.

I quite like the idea of painting it on the inside, want to give it a glow, like in the pics. thanks bushido for putting that up, I was just waiting till i was home to work to upload it. I got some pics of what i have done so far, just messing arouns with it last night. Think this will give me a good effect for the main bit of the structure. Going to go a bit larger scale now.

Anyone got any pics of similar items they have made?

as others have said, what I would do is cap one end, then fill the tube with either a paint or ink (you could fiddle with different recipe's to make it slightly translucent). If you made it translucent, you could also fill the tube after the fact with some sort of water or syrup that would refract and do fun things with light as it hit it, make a lava lamp-ish effect.

Yeah i do like the idea of ink inside, and maybe leaving it with some liquid in it permanently. I have mad stencils for the tower, and started cutting out part of it, i will post up pics/plans, could be printed off and used as stencils on some foam board to make the whole lot.

thanks a lot guys

Hmm....clear tubing with a red LED would be fantastic....

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

LED is a good idea. I can always ink it after if looks little tacky. Probably run some red glass paint down some tube, Led in bottom see how it glows.

It's the top of the tube that has me stumped, thinking an old paint lid, but want it to look very mech like. Have ordered some 20mm dia 2mm wall plastic tube, and cut half the PVC for the structure, just the top now.

Any suggestions welcome, going to trawl through some army model websites see if I come up with anything.
