Sybarite Swinging an Agonizer

Let's say I have a Dark Eldar Raider. I set it up at the beginning of the game to be parallel with my table edge and all the way 12" in. Basically, I set it up to be as far in as possible. No part of the Raider is over 12", mind you. On my turn, I measure 12" from the center of the base, mark the location, and I move my Raider to the location that I marked while keeping the same orientation. Now that I have landed, I now pivot my Raider to face toward's my opponents Predator tank. I realize that Dark Lances have a good range on them, but my opponent brought it up to me that by doing what I did that I actually moved my Raider something along the lines of about 14" to 15" instead of 12". This is mainly due to how long the Raider is and the original orientation I had the Raider before I moved and the new orientation it had after I moved. We looked over the rules for a little bit and concluded that I did my movement properly even though it is more or less cheating. He stated that in previous editions, the rules were very explicit that I could not do what I just did but they must have apparently changed it for 5th edition.

So, did I cheat or not? I can understand the argument but it looked like I did everything correctly according to the rules. Even though, technically, I moved farther than 12" due to pivoting.

Playing chess doesn't require skill, it just requires you to be good at chess...

...that would be a skill

Not cheating at all. The rules are very clear that pivoting does not count as part of your movement.

People have apparently been doing this forever. It's not even really considered cheese anymore because GW have not bothered to stop people doing in for several editions.

Edit: Also note that you measure distance from the hull, not the center point. So if your opponent really gets upset about you moving sideways, pivot about your center before you move and then measure your distance from the front of the raider.

What you did is perfectly legal, according to the rules. You're also free to pivot the raider and then move it.

So, it's definitely not outright cheating.

It does cross into the exploiting game mechanics for advantage side of things. In a highly competitive atmosphere, this sort of behavior is expected and considered good strategy. In a more casual atmosphere, doing things like this can be considered unsporting.

It's up to your playgroup to decide how you want to proceed. You can continue with this tactic, in which case this behavior will spread and your games will focus more and more about winning, or you can abandon it, in which case your games will focus more and more on beer drinking. So, it depends on what you enjoy more about the hobby: the challenge of being pitted against your opponent, or the social aspects of playing toy soldiers with your friends.

Why? To get them removed by the TO?

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
