Gots a box of gitz, there are many options open to me as far as painting, but what should i do first, shootas or sluggas? I was thinking shootas. I decided to try out my new brushes that i had purchased and also tried out a different technique with painting. As the only prototype i have is an arm, yes an ork arm. Ive never painted orks before and i decided to try some more precise painting. Tell me what you think my fellow dakka residents. Also small brushes make my day a whole lot easier for this job.

If you used some magnets. could you do both? It might not be worth the time and effort, but it would save you from buying another box of orks to get the other style if you so choose to.

I suggest getting a pin vice for the drilling and the largest magnets you can fit in those arms.

why do you want to know? huh? HUH?

it depends on what you want to use them for. i personally like feilding really shooty boyz mobs in trukks for zipping around the board shooting everything.

but if you use standard infantry i would suggest using sluggas.

I had the good fortune today to find a person who was selling an ork army, I made my attack and now I own at least a 750 pnt ork army. Some not in the greatest of shape, but their orks, its ok. Painted one of them though. Here's me first boy.

I wouldn't recommend magnetizing a whole lot of boyz - there's going to be loose arms everywhere, and guys are going to be losing arms all over the battlefield. Choppas are easy enough to get through Black Reach - use regular boyz boxes to make shootas and that works just fine for only slightly more money and a lot less work.

Your first Ork looks good! You should try basing him - even something as simple as a layer of sand/grit painted then drybrushed in a slightly lighter color will go a LONG way towards making a better looking mini. Hope to see more of this WAAAGH! as it develops

I'm with SRM on all fronts - magnetizing boys is way more trouble than it's worth and even simple basing does a lot for a model (as does drilling out gun barrels/exhaust pipes, if you haven't already considered doing so). As to whether to go shoota or slugga/choppa, plenty of threads about that on the Tactics board (personally, I'm going for a mix, but I believe shootas to be the more flexible of the two, if that's your main concern).

Looking at your test arm, I'm seeing an attempt at warpaint/tattoos on the arm and checks on the shoota, yes? For embellishments like these, I'd suggest going bigger, brighter, and simpler. Sketching the designs on lightly with a pencil beforehand will help you define the shapes, which are best filled in with a few layers of thinned paint. This allows you to refine the edges as you continue to add layers, leading to cleaner lines. Laying down the base with a darker color then highlighting will help the designs pop. It also leaves them with an outline, effectively, which gives them a more distinct shape.
