Hey, this is my first IG army list, I have revised it and it is nearly a final version, could I please get some advice on this as I am a newbie to Imperial Guard at the moment. Also if you read this please give advice, I need it.

Company Command Squad: 210
medpack, standard, plasma gun, Colonel "Iron Hand" Straken, grenade launcher

Chimera (transport): 55
heavy bolter

Troops

Platoon Command Squad: 70
standard, heavy flamer, grenade launcher

4 infantry squads (2 combined+2 combined): 220
flamers

heavy weapon squad: 90
3 missile launchers

Veterans: 132
grenadiers, 2 plasma guns, grenade launcher, bolt pistol

Fast Attack

2 Scout Sentinels: 100
lascannons

Vendetta Gunship:130 (this will take Vets)

Elites

Psyker Battle Squad: 90
8 Sanctioned Psykers

Total: 997 pts

In my army, my guardsmen are actually combat guardsmen, because Straken gives then Furious Charge and Counter-Attack, and flamers for close damage. My Vets and Vendetta are anti tank + MC's, so are my Scout Sentinels. Psykers are anti heavy infantry.

In an objective game, my Vets in the Vendetta will keep home objectives, guardsmen will advance up field to other objectives with command squad, platoon squad and psykers. Sentinels will outflank and get shots into side/rear armour of vehicles.

In anniahlation, vets and Vendetta will blow up tanks and MC's and termies as well. Guardsmen will move up shooting, and flaming if gets close then will counterattack due to Straken's rule. Pskyers will blow up tough infantry, tanks?

This is my first IG army and I don't know if it is any good. So please comment!

You could have a unit of 9 tacticals that are flipping off the enemy with both hands, they still have a bolt pistol and bolt gun.

CCS needs to be more focused. I would drop all the extra stuff they got for x4 assault weapons, probably meltas. Without a chimera, I find Psyker squads a bit lacking. Maybe swap them for another vet squad. PCS doesnt need standard or heavy flamer. x4 flamers is sufficient for them. Infantry needs a commissar. Drop the x4 squad and combine the rest into a large 30 man blob. I would downgrade the HWS to autos, better for taking out transports. Get all the sergeants and commissar power weapons and maybe some melta bombs. Vets should have x3 plasmas instead of the grenade launcher.

Cool, thanks! Sounds like good advice, will take into consideraion. Only, I was thinking the Psykers should stay behind the Guardsmen and have a Psyker poing out as the group can draw line of sight from him and still get cover. I have already bought the 4 squads of Guardsmen and the Vets. ANd I am reluctant to spend more

Another vet squad would do you well. I would drop the psykers in their favor.
Alternatively you could get another squad of guard in your platoon and go 30 and 20 or even another platoon If you can get the points.

I am noticing a lack of anti-tank. Lascannons are good for transports, but lose effectiveness against AV14, if you opponent brings a bunch of amor, you're going to want more punch. Melta in the CCS and give all the PIS melta and that problem should be solved.

With vets, dont combine weapons, just go for three of a kind, and drop the bolt pistol, it wont do you any good.

as said before, go with 4 assault weapons in the CCS, preferably melta.
same thing for the PCS, 4 flamers is ideal

it would also good to give a powerweapon to every gaurdsman that can take one so they can be effective in CC. the blobs will also need a commissar to keep them from running away.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I realise you are right and there isn't a lot of anti-tank. I will follow your advice and get 4 meltas in the CCS, 4 flamers in the PCS, swap psykers for vets a commisar and powerswords for everyone! Also, with the new Vets, what should I give them, i.e more plasma?

One more thing, I was looking to expand to a 1500 pt list, and I was thinking of getting either some more HWS or a Leman Russ Battle tank or two and maybe another platoon. What do you suggest?

P.S Did you mean Infantry Squads when you said PIS?

yes PIS is platoon infantry squad

for the vets, three of the same special weapon is the way to go, melta or plasma is ideal and just depends on what you want them to do. Either way, it would be good to give them a ride (i.e. a chimera) so they can get to where they need to go and stay protected and shoot out the fire-points.

Moving on to 1500, throwing in a couple russes is good to add extra firepower, and make a heavy armor presence that your opponent will need to deal with.
After that make another platoon to get more scoring units on the field.
That should take you up to 1500

Yeah I think thats a good way to go, but the chimera and the vets might be a bit of a strain on my points. Also, do you think I should get meltas for the Infantry Squads, they have 3 BS and I can't really afford to buy them. Plus for my new veterans, do you think I should either get gunnery sargent Harker, he can get them to infiltrate to 12 inches enemy lines where they can rapid fire and get a 3+ cover save due to stealth in a building or trees. But if they were in a chimera, they would have more protection but less could fire . What should I do?

if ur getting close would suggest demolition charges, as will soften up large squads, or help deal with 3+ armour saves

I still don't like the lack of anti-tank, you can probably get by if there is only one or two armored vehicles, but any more and you'll be in trouble.

Drop Grenadiers from the Vet squad, give your infantry squads melta and upgrade the HWS to lascannons.

By my math, with those revisions your list will be 2000 points on the nose and be more effective all around

Right, okay thanks for that. I will do as you suggested and see how that works out. Will comment after playtesting.

P.S did you mean 1000 pts when you said 2000?
