Painlord Titan Princeps of Slaanesh
|
Well I stayed up until 5 AM last night finishing up my daemons army to take to the tournament this year. I won two years ago and selected daemons as my army.....and never got around to building them until now!
List:
Lords
Keeper of Secrets, Spirit Swallower
Heroes:
Tzeentch Herald, Loremaster, BSB, Banner of Despair, Shadow
Tzeentch Herald, Loremaster, Spellbreaker, Death
Khorne Herald, Firestorm Blade, Armour of Khorne
Slaanesh Herald, Siren Song, Tormentor Blade
Masque
Core:
23 Horrors, standard, banner of change
29 Daemonettes, full cmd, Siren Std.
29 Bloodletters, Banner of Endless War
Rare:
6 flamers
6 flamers
3 Fiends of Slaanesh
Game 1: Bretonnians.
This gentleman was playing his second game of WHFB ever today, and was playing with only 2300 points or so. Despite the handicap he wanted to play in the tournament, and I drew him as my first opponent. The game lasted only a few turns, but was quite enjoyable. Highlights were his now level-0 wizard [after a miscast] charging the keeper of secrets, and a small unit of men-at-arms not only killing my fiends of slaanesh, but then charging a unit of flamers, getting cut down to just the champion by stand and shoot to WIN the combat and threaten to destroy the flamers! UGH! Unfortunately for him, Five of his units got put in reserves, so that racked up lots of points for me, since I ended up tabling him
Points: 27
Game 2: Lizardmen
I went first. Irresistible force Purple Sun through my own keeper [who rolled a 6 and died, betrayed by Tzeentch!] took out half his tomb guard and the slann. Then an enlarged pit of shades took his bloody handed choppa unit of saurus down to only 5 models. All units were in combat or shot down by flamers at the top of turn 2, and we called the game a massacre. We re-set up deployment and played again, this time not using initiative-bomb spells on his Slann. The just-for-fun game was much more fun than the decimation that was the first.
Points: 24
Game 3: Empire
This will be the real battle report, though it's still going to be short as the game ended after 4 turns.
This scenario is IDIOTIC. The Empire army worked VERY well and did a great job of putting its strengths against my weaknesses and nullifying my magic.
Emperor
Arch Lector on altar
3 priests
light wizard
3 units of 5 blazing sun knights
big unit of like 8 blazing sun knights
20 spearmen
20 spearmen
3 cannons
mortar
2 steam tanks
First turn the scenario gave us frenzy. One of his knight units failed their test and charged my fiends. On my turn my flamers failed their test and charged some knights. Not much else happened. My keeper, daemonettes, and a unit of flamers had ended up in reserves, so they walked on.
Turn 2: LIGHTNING BOLT! He lost two units of knights, a mortar, 5 wounds off a steam tank, 4 wounds off the other tank, 2 knights from the emperor's unit, wounded the war altar, killed the entire mortar, and crew from all three cannons, in addition to some spearmen. During the magic phase he miscast and rolled up "S6 hit to all wizards and dispel dice channelers". Knightly priest escaped unharmed, but wizard and other priests took wounds. He charged my daemonettes this turn with the emperor, and that combat would last most of the game. My magic and shooting did very little, but he did manage to blast the keeper's face off with a cannonball. Dead! Oh.... I took damage from the lightning bolt too. Wounded keeper, killed masque, killed a fiend, otherwise little damage.
Turn 3: LIGHTNING BOLT!! This is just getting silly. Only knights in the big emperor unit lived, all other knights died. One steam tank dead, other up to 9 wounds. More spearmen dead. Cannons lose more crew, only to be charged by my flamers and wiped out. Arch Lector's ride gets smashed by lightning and arch lector takes 2 wounds. He joins a unit of spearmen. Emperor's knights and daemonettes continue fighting it out. His wizard miscasts again, getting the same result. S6 hits across the board. Mounted priest is wounded, but all other priests, wizard, and Arch Lector die. My turn, bloodletters mill about trying to get to chaos portal. He kills the daemonettes down to a single model, but she rolls Insane Courage!.
Turn 4: All casters channel all dice. He's out of wizards, and doesn't cast much. All he has is two half-dead units of spearmen, a tank with 1 wound, the Emperor and his priest.
My turn, I use Miasma to lower the initiative of the knight unit with the emperor and cast pit of shades. The knights die, but the emperor and priest are still alive. I move closer to the objective......
.....but the game ends and neither of us has a character by the portal. It's a draw.
Thoughts:
Game 1, I got lucky pulling the new player. We worked on his army list in the free time between games though, and though he never won, he had a much better army out of it.
Game 2, I got what I needed. Nuke the slann right away, plus all but one rank of their main fighting unit, and it's game over.
Game 3 was dumb. My magic luck was bad, my shooting was terrible - but I didn't NEED ANY of it. I could have sat back and waited, and let the scenario kill him instead. It's awful! And the random game length? 4 turns that end on a 3+ after? Why not go the way 40k does it? Imagine this: You're losing. Horribly. Everything of yours is falling apart around you. If your character that's next to the objective holds it, you'll get 500 VPs and might not get massacred, but you're still losing! .....Well just take a step back away from that objective! Now nobody controls it and the scenario is a draw!
I don't really feel like I played that well in the last game though, either. I misjudged distances and used Siren Song to force the Emperor and his cavalry unit to charge my daemonettes - but they actually succeeded in the charge since I was too close. It took him several turns, but he ground them down eventually. I think given that, I should have sent the bloodletters over to flank charge, instead of trying a long-shot charge that failed, then caused them to wander around for two turns.
Still though, ended with first place for the tournament. Leaves us with:
1st - Daemons
2nd - Empire
3rd - Lizardmen

Horrific Horror

What is your issue with next round?
Round one limits magic and power builds, leading to balanced armies showing up to the tournament. Round two may be unique but is does not favor certain armies, and it is entirely possible to win without the fanatic, so it does not hurt anyone. Mission three is straight from the book so no problem there. So much better than round one.

How did this happen? I thought you can pre-measure everything in WHFB?

I had in my head the number 16. Typical 4 inch infantry movement, plus 12 from rolling box cars. To use Siren the charge has to be plausible, so I have to be within 16" of most infantry, so I put myself there [pre-measuring and all].
Lo and behold he was cavalry with a movement of 7, and he got a 10 on the charge dice. More than enough to reach me. I needed to be 19 inches away, and just completely forgot about that. Wasn't thinking.
