I'm basing my dark eldar army with molten lava fields and still hot black rock. Along with that I'm making a full lava gaming board.(standard mostly lava rock, some molten pools and spires, etc) I also want to make some modular terrain pieces other than lava pools and rocky spires. The problem I'm having is I have no idea what type of ruins/buildings/or facilities would match this type of board.(if any at all) your suggestions are appreciated.

I stumbled across this blog the other day which might help with some scratch built, lava-esque ideas: http://darkfuturegaming.blogspot.com/2009/10/how-to-build-lava-themed-game-table-by.html

For pre-made features I think the Zuzzy (http://www.zuzzy.com/) "Despoiled Reaches" terrain fits the theme well if you wanted some other vent / mound ideas. Also, their "Ruined Land" trees would look pretty good if painted in a burnt charcoal look, IMHO.

Hope this helps.

That tutorial is what I'm using actually. The trees and mounds are great, my issue is potentially fitting (thematic-wise) types of buildings, though that zuzzy website has some good stuff as well, thanks.

Monolith Icon has some crazy looking chaos stuff done in blood that would look equally slick in lava.

How about replicating some sort of foundry similar to what was seen on Mustafar in Star Wars (where Obi Wan battled Anakin at the end of RotS) ?

Well, the inside of volcanoes is not the most densely populated area, so buildings would look weird.
But you can get some inspiration from the Star Wars world Mustafar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mustafar

Mr. Dandy has these pools and rocks:

And you can paint most rivers as lava rivers (e.g. Pegasus)

Nice, I hadn't even thought of the star wars angle. I think if I just made the board and the various vents/mounds/pools as modular, I could make a separate modular center piece foundry structure for games of Apoc/planetstrike. Following that I suppose individual 2-3 story foundry ruins could give memthe urban terrain I might need for changing up the theme a bit. Another thought would be making a totally separate 2'x2' army display board focused in a foundry. My raiders and venoms could be displayed in the actual molten lava seeing as how I'm only keeping the stem transparent and covering the bases with lava flow. The infantry models could then be displayed on catwalks and such. Thanks a lot for all the ideas people, I appreciate it.

Another thing: You miss an opportunity if you don't light the lava, see this army:

I also reccomend using crackle paste on your board. Look into how to use it and give it a think. In my eyes, it makes great broken ground with lava runnning under it (visible through the cracks).

EDIT:

??? also reccomend???? I need to have a think before i press submit...

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

Does your table represent an area which has always been lava and rocks? If so, mining buildings and machines (some destroyed/damaged by war and lava accidents) seem sensible. Other than Chaos or mysterious lava aliens, no one would want to live there by choice

But if it's an area only recently inundated by lava, I'd expect a big variety of buildings, all burned/crushed/swallowed by lava, ash and rocks.

I'd like to see 'normal' imperial buildings sinking into the lava and burnt to a crisp. Good luck!

You could do sulfur mines.

Always thought it looked dark eldar/chaos. You could even model some slaves around

You need big drills like those from Ramshackle:
