I was recently made aware of someting in the Space Marine Codex.
Rhinos have storm bolters listed in their standerd wargear, and also in the options list.

Does this mean you can buy a storm bolter, and then have 2?
Why do some of the pictures of Rhinos have no storm bolter?
Have I missed something?

Sorry if this has been FAQed or answered before.

You can indeed have 2 storm bolters on a Rhino, but the fact is, why would you when you're moving them every turn? Yes it counts as an extra weapon to stop it getting wrecked from constant WD results but it's not worth it imo.

for 5 points (I assume) Its very much worth it. 5 points to stop it from being glanced to death ?

But by then your Rhino has probably done it's job, only take it if you have spare points.

Oh yeah take it only if you can afford that luxury.

Rhinos are great. My Chaos Rhino tankshocked a Dreadknight off my objective before thus winning me the game !

(It didn't have Dirge Caster )

2 storm bolters means it can pick off a few GEQs here and there, doesn't sound like much but its a 100% increase in firepower for the rhino and every now and then its ahndy to be able to shoot the last guy off an objective.

But generally its to keep the metal box alive a bit more

Yeah, my chaos rhinos are great too, they always pass their repair rolls.

The extra storm bolter is only 5 points for Dark Angels (because their codex is a bit older).

At 5 points, it's a good buy.

For chaos, 10 points can be worth it, because you get the extra melta or flamer with the bolter.

But 10 points per rhino for a plain storm bolter is kind of iffy and adds up fast. If you buy the extra bolter for 3 rhinos, that would almost buy you another rhino.

After one or two turns you guys should be pretty close to where they need to be and it doesn't really matter if it gets glanced to death any more since it already delivered its payload. Given the fact a rhino can repair an immobilized result anyway I think the extra storm bolter is points that could almost certainly be better spent some where else.

As to why some of GW's rhinos don't have them... The rules for rhinos and their variants weaponry has varied from codex edition to edition. Some have had the storm bolter as standard, some have not... and models tend to hang around between editions.

So if you put a Marine shooting the bolter from the top hatch, that can be your free one, yes?

If you only have a single storm bolter on there, that would be your 'free' one. Whether or not you have a guy shooting it is more or less irrelevant.

Technically, the free one should be the storm bolter on the same mount the HK missile uses (as pictured throughout the codex, page 116, for example) which leave your the pintle mount for the second storm bolter if you choose to take it, since it is actually specified as being a pintle mount, where the free storm bolter isn't.

In practice, though, it doesn't actually make any difference, since GW decided to change the rules in the FAQ so that the hull mount has the same fire arc as the pintle mount...

The extra storm bolter is worth it for 5 and probably not for 10, at least on the Rhino. That said, it can be more or less worth it on other vehicles. For instance, I would probably pay the 10 points for the extra storm bolter on a Predator with heavy bolter sponsons, as the storm bolter significantly contributes to that unit's torrent capability. On the other hand, I wouldn't even pay 5 points for an extra storm bolter on a Vindicator, since the vehicle already comes with one and the additional one really doesn't add much.

Thanks! What's the arc on it now? Full 360 or something different?

360, blocked by its own model (so potentially the other SB, if you take one) as usual

Pintles are essentially turrets.

if equipped with 2x storm bolters, they are ST 4 , so if you moved only 6" could you fire both? one as defensive?
I have only used a transport a few times and am learning their rules as of late, I have a Rhino/back, and a LRC...

I like them more now that my opponent doesn't play Tau with Railgun Spam.... before I had kinda given up on them doing much...

I take them on the 2 rhinos in my army and they are great. People tend to forget about Rhino's after its dropped off troops. So it can move around at 6" and shoot. that's 8 bolter shots at 24"!!!! for 20 extra points that's almost a squad of firepower.

Not to highjack this thread, but does anybody know where I should model the second storm bolter were I to take that option?

There are two hatches at the front of the rhino, one takes the first storm bolter, I would suggest on the other.
