is it possible to commission designs other than those featured already on the site? specifically, i am looking for ones with Cyrillic (Russian) letters, like и, я, п, й, etc.

Could be a result of the process/material they use. I know Shapeways offers several options.

Don't a lot of the 3d printers essentially use a process where tiny 'beads' of material are melted together to make the design? I know a friend has a home-built 3d printer and the stuff he's printed looks kind of like the styrofoam that's expanded pellets, albeit very, very small pellets.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Yes most definitely. I've already done a couple of custom pads for others, an example of which can be seen here. http://www.shapeways.com/model/276634/28mm_shoulder_pad_custom_sunburst_blood_moon.html?gid=ug

Russian letters would not be that hard to do either, feel free to contact me through the Custom Minis website and we can discuss what you would like further.

Storm Shields should not be an issue, I've shot a email back to you regarding your questions.

I would be interested in seeing an actual product detailed photo from this vendor, if so I may end up using shapeways finally.

I wish Shapeways was a good source for 3D print, as their prices are awesome compared to the 50-200$ we have to pay for our CAD designs to be printed up (and thats for a small shoulder pad or arm size piece), and we still have to clean and polish them up to remove the "stepping" or print lines.

The photos above are actual pictures of the product. I apologize for the lighting but it's the best I can do at the moment. Depending one what material you use, you will get that fuzziness, but they have recently released a polished material for models using the "fuzzy" material in which they polish it down to a smooth feel.

For the shoulder pads we use a completely different material, it lays out a thin layer of plastic material at either .2mm or .1mm (which is considerably small) and leaves little to no striations. On the shoulder pad tests I've done so far I've seen no striations, but depending on the size of model you are looking at getting printed with this material you could easily reach the $50-$200 mark.

As the commissioner of the pads in the above post I can say that my dealings with Custom Minis have been excellent. I don't yet have the pads in hand, but I'm happy to post pictures when I do.

Cough cough... Not sure what terminators are but I do have an experiment run of larger shoulder pads able to fit miniatures of a larger status So we'll just have to wait and see if the test run fits correctly.

Something similar to the "heresy" style but not quite as large would be cool.

Yes they can, here is a link to a custom Storm Shield I had designed.

It is rather cheap for the design fee and it is a one time fee as far as I have found.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to give an update of some of the work that's been done. Over the last two weeks I had a sale on Custom Shoulder pads and some of you guys took fool advantage of it. I'm quite pleased with the way they have turned out and have gotten some great feed back so far.

So glad to see you are interested in starting a successor chapter......

Seriously though, if you like the 2D jester skull he did for me, there is another on his site in 3D that is amazing. That one is reserved for my officers...

I'll post pics when I get my order in.

Lots of people have shapeway stores for warhammer.

Like Chapterhouse was saying 3D printing often leaves a "stair step" effect, which needs to be manually fixed. Also its basically powder stuck togeather, so even after things you get rapid prototype'd are finished, they are not as strong as resin or plastic models.

The stairstep problem is mostly for rounded and curved surfaces on small objects. At a distance it looks sort of grainy sometimes.

That said, some people have made very nice models with 3d Printing, though most print a single master, which they then have a sculptor clean up and produce molds using the item. I believe this is how Spartan Games produces their new Dystopian Wars stuff.

Anywho, its a really cool technology, and while I don't know if shapeways has figured out a way to overcome the problems associated with it. And again if you cast stuff, rapid prototyping is great for getting you 90% of the way done with a model, and you just fix it up, smooth it out and cast a crap ton of copies.

Just my 2c on the subject.
