I recently became civilly and criminally liable for violation of copyright law but I know better than to advertise that on DakkaDakka.

Wow. We had a thread about this a month ago, and people thought it was just a scam. Now I can get a $20 Malanthrope.

Out of morbid curiosity I took the plunge and placed a small order myself. Took about a month to get, as expected. Casting quality was certainly no worse, maybe even better, than Forge World. I've purchased eight or so kits direct from FW, they've always needed work.

So are we saying that this company is illegally casting FW stuff? It certainly looks that way.

So what if it is?

Forgeworld stuff is DRASTICALLY overpriced and the limited selection this website offers at the reduced cost are is welcome sight. Once its painted noone will ever beable to tell apart the "counterfit" models from the real ones.

There looks to be a lot wrong about that site.
Emails are to Yahoo.com.cn or Hotmail.com addresses.

A Whois search on the website name lists phone numbers, if anyone wanted to call them at all.

It's criminal, that's what it is. Its immoral. I don't care if you personally buy these, I don't care all too much about the wrongful act. Justifying it is the weak way out... just accept the fact you're doing something wrong and live with it.

When you say FW stuff is overpriced what basis are you using to make that assesment? Do you have miniature manufacturing experiance? Do you know how many hours went into creating the master model? Do you know how much it has to be marked up to justify FW staying in business? These prices while they might be better are probably what GW could charge if it didn't have to invest time and energy producing a master model and didn't have a responsibility to shareholders.

Well you can go ahread and keep paying $70 for a dread from forgeworld, I'd rather just pay 20 for a cheap knockoff that looks EXACTLY the same. And FYI its not illegal in china where the company is located.

Doesn't matter. If people can get FW stuff a lot cheaper, they will do it.

Actually it is illegal in China, it just isn't enforced... China sees counterfitting as being somewhere on the same level as a speeding ticket... no one cares until you draw too much attention to yourself. With FW doing production in China these very well may be coming from the same plant. Same mold, same equipment, just working after hour without concern for GW's overhead.

warpcrafter wrote:Doesn't matter. If people can get FW stuff a lot cheaper, they will do it.
I realize that. That's why my only expectation is that people who do at least "man" up about it and not try to hide behind the fiction that they are otherwise being taken advantage of. The fact is they may feel that way but they have no way to actually prove it.

It doesn't matter where the counterfeit goods are produced, purchase, sale, and possession(in many cases) is illegal in the US as well.

I won't be making any purchases from them, not because I am afraid of breaking the law or anything like that, but instead that I firmly believe piracy is wrong. If you can't afford to pay the people who make the product what they want to be paid for it, don't buy a fake copy and say you outsmarted them.

This all sounds a bit dodge to me. I'm sure GW will have their best legel bods on the case and try and shut them down ASAP! I suppose buying it is a bit like down loading a copy of an Imperial Armour book for free, you're not paying the original creator of the work so, in a way, you're breaking the law surely? I think I'll begrudgingly stick to the genuine stuff, at least I'm safe in the knowledge I wont get my fingers burnt if they suddenly shut down (There was a similar thing in China where they had phoney Apple shops - will they stop at nothing?!)

I don't believe you. If you can it certainly isn't the same quality. I've produced my own models. To do a dreadnought sized model... I spent more than a $1. If it only cost $1, GW would use it for all their miniatures.

As mentioned, buy it all you like, but when you get it blocked at customs, it's you they'll get for importing counterfeit goods into the country.

FW may be expensive, but it should come down when more people buying their stuff brings down the production costs.

Yes, because the average amount of inflation every year is somewhere between 1-3%, meaning a price raise once a year isn't really about making more money, it's about getting the same amount of worth from something that lost worth
