So, I was reading my Tau codex (I don't play Tau, just like reading the fluff) , and found a part that caught my attention. It said:

"Kroot mercenaries can be found alongside Eldar, Orks, and even the Dreaded legions of Chaos". Has anybody ever seen anybody include "Chaos Kroot" in a Chaos army as mercenaries? And, if so, what were they counted as?

Thanks! -Ogryn

No, I haven't. It would be pretty cool though, and good conversion practice.

Well, Kroot used to have a mercenaries list that let them be allied to other armies. I played a guy who had Eldar with allied Kroot and it was kinda cool.

If I were to use Kroot in a CSM army I'd just use them as lesser daemons. For deep striking, say they were stealthily hiding in the area until the time was right.

Thank you, SRM. I actually play Eldar, too. How did he paint the Kroot?

He didn't, he didn't paint much. I don't see why you'd paint them any differently from their standard scheme though; it's pretty neutral.

Kroothawk directed me toward this, the kroot Merc codex:
http://www.chaosfactor.org/images/5th_ed_kroot_mercenaries_army_list_by_kompletely_kroot_V5.83.pdf

Gots some paint and conversion ideas in there, plus nice and kroot focused fluff. Don't particularly remember any Chaos Kroot, but there are psychic Kroot, iirc, so possible.

Kroot working for Chaos are not Chaos Kroot, Kroot working for Eldar don't have pointy ears. It's just work.

While Kroot are not principally immune to corruption, their shapers smell the corruption and when detected, every kroot would kill them on sight to save the race. So a surviving group of Kroot would be extremely unlikely and couldn't field a shaper.

Chaos Kroot go a little gribbly

ECHOES OF THE MONT'AU
As Slaanesh’s army approached our allies, horrifying changes began rippling through the Kroot and they began convulsing, screeching horribly as their flesh erupted in mutation. At this point I realised that these were the Kroot who had feasted on the flesh of the enemy dead at Fio’kai. Slaanesh’s main thrust suddenly altered direction and, instead of charging the Kroot, began heading towards my position. Worse still, the Kroot I had stationed in front as the lure, began advancing alongside Slaanesh’s forces with murder in their eyes!

Yeah, it's from the old GW site.

excerpt from the Book of War, memoirs of Fire Warrior Commander Shas’o Sa’cea Tsua’m, a true and glorious account of the noble actions of the Fire Warriors from the Kais-shi academy on Sa’cea. Being the telling of events pursuant to the invasion of Ke’lshan by the forces of the Mont ’au.

Sounds like non-sanctioned fan-fiction to me. Can you name author and source? Found it on the internet is not enough. Never seen that text.

From what I remember that was a story from the WD when the Tau were first released (can't remember the issue unfortunately and got rid of most of my old ones to free up cupboard space). It also features further in the story the Tau commander's belief he killed slanesh as at the time they didn't get the concept of the worshipped warp entities so when told they were fighting the followers of slanesh they assumed that was the name of the general

Like Rice said, it's from GWs old website. I remember the page also featured a converted possessed XV8 battlesuit made from a Flamer of Tzeentch.
It's where the oft-joked about "Tau are so ignorant they think they killed Slaanesh and wonder why the Eldar are still scared" comes from.

I didn't say I found it on the Internet, I said it's from GW's old website.

It's from the perspective of a Tau Commander who has never encountered the forces of Chaos before, nor has he heard of the Chaos Gods.

I myself spoke to our captive at length and was to learn many things, which I will spare you the full horror of. It is enough to say that he claimed to serve a dark master, a being known as Slaanesh, a being who is the antithesis of all the Tau believe in

Before terminating the captive, I was able to extract the location of the main force of this Slaanesh and formed up my forces, ready to engage this depraved foe.

I shudder to think of what might have happened had Slaanesh been allowed to claim Ke’lshan as his own and I offer thanks to the Ethereals that their prescience led my warriors and I to that world. To allow such a debased echo of our former selves to exist would have dishonoured all those who have fought and died for the Greater Good

With source I want something more than "on an old GW website" which happened to include fan fiction, tau conversions with tentacles and other non-sanctioned stuff.
With author I wanted some thing like ... an author, and I don't think it was written by a Tau commander.
Until then it is just some text posted by an internet guy.

It was published in WD as part of the first release of Tau (it is my chest of old copies so will have to look it up) it tells of how Kroot ate chaos infected flesh, this lead to very brightly coloured Kroot who turned around and started attacking the Tau.

If you check the link that CpatTom posted, it's there and appears to be from an old Index Astartes article, did ya check that?

Have you maybe Googled Echoes of the Mont'au?

It doesn't give an author for the story, it just appeared on the old GW site.

And as I posted before it's from the perspective of the Tau Commander
