So right; I've been painting red armies for a long time now, but any other space marine army I try and paint ends up red. I've decided to start a flesh tearers army as I'm very fond of chainswords and am a strong believer of "chainswords should have rending rule"

I've run into a few problems, but one of them that keeps niggling at me is this; the spinning circular saw blade, and how to go about making it.
Any ideas?

I slapped together a quick tutorial in photoshop for ya

I would highly encourage you to try this on a sheet of paper prior to any modelwork, paint or pencil, just to get the angles down.

Step 1: Get your base circular shape down. I recommend doing all the geometry work in pencil (mechanicals tend to work best). If you have any circular thigns to trace that suits the size of the buzzsaw (bottlecaps, vials,) or even better a Pencil Compass to get your exact size

Step Two:After you have your base color down, lightly divide the circle into sections with pencil, just like a pizza. For smaller saws I suggest less divisions since you may not be able to get in the detail with more teeth.

Step Three: Heres the detail work. Like in the figure below, draw the tooth edge. Starting at the tip of a division line, angle a line down (less than 45 degrees) and cut slightly into the next division. Then cut back up to the next division line point. You can either do this in pencil first or go right to the paint work, whatever you feel comfortable with.

Step Four: Repeat the process all the way around! Patience garners better results!

Step Five: Go in and fill in the surrounding color to the outside of the now formed buzzsaw.

Step Six: Get rid of the pencil lines (light erasing shall do) and toss in a blood drop. Now you have your Flesh Tearers symbol!

Hope this helped out!

Totally worth it. Painting all those buzzsaws is just too much.

The shouldpads of course, thats a must. But transfers only go so far, especially when you want to do your own thing, ex black buzzaw on red background, especially if you want big ol saws on your land raider tips and all that jazz.

Thanks guys, but I think you may have missed my meaning; since the flesh tearers use chain-weapons so much they've incorporated a chain weapon into the same shape as their symbol, like so:

Thanks for the help on the symbol as well, but if anyone has a clue how you would go about making something like this then could you please let me know?
(Please note that this excellent conversion is not mine)

Ah! I see. You can use use thin plasticard and cut it up much like the diagrams I did for the painting, just trace out a circle and then cut it up from there. To be honest I've never seen them with those types of weapons before, but then again, I dont know jack about Flesh Tearers fluff. Not sure what you have at your local shop, but the one near me sells a pack of plasticard along with the plastic rods you can chop up to make the little nub part on the top as well.

qft!!!!

the stuff has multiple uses too, like using it for any mechanicum axe-blade. Its also thinner and more resilient.

Your option could also be to start casting it. I say this only because I've just been made aware that liquid sculpting media exist. Use Kneadadite or other putty (I suppose plasticene might work too) to create your mould. Then pour in the liquid medium to create your cast.

Thanks for the help I've posted here my first flesh tearers (and I do apologise for the poor quality picture)
I may add some more as I get them, but for now I have Gabriel Seth and nearly a whole tactical squad. I also have a scout squad but I need to do a little more work on them first.
