My first real attempt at OSL -- feedback and criticism appreciated.

I think he looks pretty good, especially for a first time attempt at OSL. You've got the light reflections in the right places but I think the intensity is a little too much. Especially up at his armpit and face. Remember that the reflected light (on his skin and rocks and whatnot) will always be less intense than the light source (your lava). And even less the further from the source you get (of course other factors effect this too). You could easily touch it up by making the farther reaches of the light a lil darker with some orange over that yellow? You could also lighten up some of the lava areas with a lil white to make it look extra white hot (this would help justify the yellow on the rocks)! - Not flamed, just SMOKIN HOT! SSSSssssss!

All in all, a VERY good first attempt! Cheers!

Thanks for the crit.... i see exactly what you're saying there. Ive, brightened up the rocks along the edges, added some white highlighting to the lava (not a lot though) and put some orange on the further reaches and edges just to mute things a bit... will attach a new photo once i get it where it needs to be.

Yep, it works. Perhaps a touch on his left knee too...

Couple of pointers - metals and reflective surfaces get a more intense OSL highlight - effectively this means you use a brighter highlight at longer distance, but just on facing edges. When doing metals though, you need to artificially boost contrast to get the osl to show.

Your gold doesn't seem to be finished yet, so you may want to give this a go.
