After a bit of failure to really get Warmahordes kickin' in my gaming group, I'm returning with my tail between my legs to good ol' Warhammer. However I've timed my return well, getting back in just in time for Mantic's release of Warpath (Giving me fun, cheap models to pilage!)

I very quickly decided on doing up an army of Squats, counting as Space Marines. Ordered up my Warpath goodies for the start of the army, and excitedly began building when it arrived last night.

I'm currently only sitting on around 600 points or so, but will expand as I can and as they release more.

As it stands, my army consists of:

Captain: Thunder Hammer, Bolt Pistol, Artificier Armor

Tactical Squad 1:
7x Bolter
1x Heavy Bolter
1x Melta Gun
1x Sergeant with Power Fist and Bolt Pistol

Tactical Squad 2:
7x Bolter
1x Heavy Bolter
1x Melta Gun
1x Sergeant with Power Fist and Bolt Pistol

1x Thunderfire Cannon

Pics of early progress in 20 minutes or so. Trying to get back in to my photo bucket. x.x

I want to do a squat army as well, I like where this is going, I didn't even think to use the forge fathers models, I was going to use WHFB Dwarves, and space marine bolters

The thing I have going for me is I'm pretty much strictly a friendly game person. No one particularly minds that my Squats aren't wielding actual GW Bolters or Meltas. The Forge Fathers would otherwise be a very difficult route to take. Fully half of the basic troops already have their rifle sculpted to their upper torso (Two piece mini's, the other half are 4 to 5.)

But the theme of the weapons is recognizable enough not to cause trouble in friendly settings.

Okay, so your not running this a tournys. Than you should be all set with how they will play on the TT.

Also, can I get a better picture of that vehicle thingy it looks pretty sweet!

Sure thing

Also, here's the first few really quick and dirty paint testers. I'm a huge fan of purple armies, (My former DE, Slaanesh Daemons, and Pretty Marine's armies all testaments to that) but I don't know if I like it on the squats. I've devoted a combat squad to take the hit for me while I test a few more schemes thought.

After a day of fiddling with color schemes, a winner has emerged! A very slightly altered version of my very first attempt.

Anyway, now that that has been figured out I can move on with the rest of the army. Next week's my vacation from work, and my fiance still works all week, so I should have absolutely no excuses for not having the first 650 points I have nicely finished by then.

Just need to figure out how to base them. Any suggestions?

Interesting, how does the "plastic resin" feel?

I think I'm going to watch this thread, because I'm keen to see your thoughts about the Mantic range.

The Plastic Resin's a pretty interesting material so far. It's pretty heavy and stiff, but doesn't seem to be anywhere near as brittle as most resins I've deal with. Definitely needs scrubbed before working with it, or else the mold agent even shrugs off superglue, but that goes without saying. Trimming it up's a bit of a pain, but overall I rather like it so far.

As far as the range itself goes I have some qualms, but I'm pretty pleased as a whole. As I mentioned earlier, fully half of the Forge Father basic troops are 2 piece models. The rifles and heads are already sculpted onto the torso, which attaches the the back and legs which are one piece. The rifle joins into the body in an ugly detailess blob on one side. Those ones are a bit problematic.

The other half are 4 to 5 pieces depending on the equipment, and have a number of options for heads. The ones I've posted as my paint testers have all been of this variety, as they come out looking a bit cleaner and more defined. As a whole the mini's have some flaws and aren't of the absolute greatest sculpting quality, but I'd say very nice for the price tag.

I'd put them at around the level of AoBR miniatures. Not exactly showcase material, but certainly usable.

I have some of the Orx Marauders too, and I really like them. There's a few bodies that only accept certain heads, but that's been my only snag with them at all. They're my fiance's though, so I haven't done much with them except build a few for her last night.

Little update:

Just finished up a small group of squats (Well, mostly, taking pictures let me see a few touch ups I missed, and I'm still figuring out what kind of bases to do.)

I also snagged a few quick pictures of one of the Orx Marauders and a Marauder Raptor while I was at it for anyone looking at the Mantic stuff.

Painting's going a little slow right now. I just moved into a new apartment and didn't realize how poor the lighting was until I tried painting in the evenings like I usually do. Eye strain galore.

Cheers for the look at the Warpath but I can't really say that Pink fits my ideas for Squats although it does remind me of Corporal Littlebottom......

One more update for tonight.

Finished off the Thunderfire Cannon equivilant. But I'm starting to doubt how well the warlock purple will work on a larger scale. It isn't wanting to work too nicely on the cannon, and I'm rather dissapointed with how it turned out.

I worked up a quick test model for more a more earthy, traditional Dwarf look I may have to go for. Calling it a night on working on them so I can figure out exactly what I want to do with them.

Or there's always stealing the Space Wolf colors. I think they'd look pretty nice on some space dwarves, with a little tweaking (Less yellow, more bronze!)

[Thumb - Alternate.JPG]
Alternate, less eye assaulting color scheme. I'm a lover of bold, striking colors, but they just really aren't fitting right in this case.

Except that I lied. Tried out one other color scheme really quick, it's a very rough tester but it does the job.

Now just to choose one and repaint the others to match.

Subscribed. My own Forge Fathers came in today as well...and as I was already working on a group of Squat Imperial Guard....they are so hired. I think I'll end up basing the Jotunn Heavy Hailstorm Cannons and using them as Hydra Flak Tanks (Based to match the footprint of the regular sized tank).
