I need some ideas and help with a situation that has cropped up at out local game store. Wednesday has always been 40K day. It is on the door of the shop, they move inventory and allow us enough room for 6-10 boards to play. One of the players who is , shall we say, not well loved has recently got a job at this shop. He is an annoying little twit and most can not stand him. Here is the problem

Yesterday he brought 14 D&D players to the shop. They took up all but 2 tables. We had 8 players for 2 tables and he was like TS. Then he starts asking us if Tuesday will work better for 40K.

So How do you get ride of D&D players? I am thinking a 2 step approach where the store runs out of Mountain Dew and then pretty girls show up and try to talk to them. They seem to be a lot like cats so will spraying them with water work? I know if we put light weight chairs out that will limit at least 4 of them from sitting down.

Any ideas appreciated !

Talk to the store manager, calmly.

tell him that Wednesday has been 40k night. Ask him to talk to the new employee about moving his D&D to tuesday.

I would avoid the condescending attitude about D&D. It's no more silly than pushing around little army men.

As kronk said, politely talk to the store manager. Its the new guy who's being awkward not the DnD guys/gals who proberly don't even realise.

You stop being a passive aggressive immature child and talk to the player or the store manager like an adult. If there are lots of you there is no way the store manager is going to want one of his employees displacing what is typically the most lucrative portion of his customer base.

This story feels odd though. Typically players no one likes don't get hired on. Your reaction and language aren't painting you in a very good light.

As others have stated, just speak to the store manager, again - calmly, explain how for the last <however long... weeks, months, years> Wednesday has always been 40k night, and lots of players have scheduled their lives around this so it would be nice to have the consistency back as the sudden change may not suit everybody who now shows up.

It's really as simple as that, and if they put their foot down saying Tuesday is the new 40k night... find a new shop I guess if it doesn't work with you.

Edit: also , drop the hate amongst other table top games. D&D players laugh at 40k players for spending hundreds of dollars where to play their game is pretty much a 1 time investment of a $50 core rulebook... not including supplements of course (I play both games, so I see it from both sides lol).

Agree with everything here. Stop being a brat and talk to the manager.

Also, who's to say that the 40k players are the most lucrative portion of his customer base. Perhaps these new D&D players will start buying more from the store, or (more likely) the store has 2-3 Magic events a week.

Way to be polite and social. Your flaming does not paint you in a very good light either.

To OP: I would just go talk to him. If there is enough of you, he can't say no if you all ask him to move the D&D night to Tuesday. If he refuses, you can always look for another store.

Not liking you're attitude here.

Maybe go and actually try D&D, you may find you may actually like it.

If it really is that bad, like everyone else said, go and talk to the manager or find another games store.

And seriously, 40k players getting pretty girls to show up? how much are you paying them?

Better try giving the 40k players their bibs and dummies back first.

Seriously, don't hate on other games, or you become the unlikable little twit.

But they stole their gaming evening without even asking. Why did the owner had to invite the D&D players on their evening? If Tuesday was also available, why not asking the D&D players to come then, instead of just telling his group to make way for the new players?

It wasn't the owner, it was the new employee - likely the store manager/owner wasn't in that evening.

You're coming off as a sort of elitist prick. That's not a good way to go about things. Yeah, it sucks that there's a D&D group taking up your usual night, but they're people too, and D&D is a lot of fun. A lot of 40k players play D&D, or even used it as their gateway into gaming.

Instead of being passive/aggressive, go talk to the manager about how Wednesday has been 40k night for however long, and to please have the D&D folks meet up on another night. I had a similar situation with a group of Naruto CCG players at my FLGS and I just changed the date I go there.

Because the employee got the D&D people to show up. Is that abusing his "power"? Maybe. Bring it up to his boss.
Starting a "war" between 40k and D&D nights is the wrong way to resolve this.

Your story is fishy. You say you have 6 to ten tables. So that means they took up 4 to 8 tables. You need at least 3 for D&D but more likely 6-7. So... Your story doesnt add up.

Also, your being a git. 40k is just as nerdy or more then D&D, and has the same sterotypes too.

And hot girls as you put it are more likly to play D&D then 40k.

Then just go and talk to the guy or the manager, don't just hate on another game system or stereotype the people who play it because one group are taking over a gaming night. By their accounts they were ok doing it as the employee invited them in the 1st place, yes moan and whinge about the employer and manager, but not the d&d game or players, they are an innocent party in this. the problem lies with the employee and manager, the way to solve the probelm wold be to talk to the manager.

To me it sounds like the D&D guys were a group that met on a wednesday and the employee just invited them in becasue he was now an employee and had a store at his disposal. the D&D guys probably cannot meet another night.

The Manager should rule in 40k players favour, as they shouldnt have to change their night for another group. like it has repeated and done to death, he should be the one to talk to and make the decision here.

The OP should stop whineing and moaning about other games.

Thx everyone who replied.

For those of you who stated I need to knock off my attitude about D&D players I understand your point of view. Chalk it up to not very well written sarcasm. I know 40k is as dorky as D&D I was just trying to lighten up the conversation.

I myself do not think the way to go is to ask the manager to intervene. First when I state that the new employee as a not well liked guy does not mean I do not like him. I am by far the oldest player at the tables and I go more for something to do with MY son than anything else. The new employee is a core 40k player but he does things that make other players mad. If by the third turn he is way behind he will just throw in the towel and pick up. He will stop in the middle of a game with no warning to go get food. He pokes fun at newer players and if someone reacts he will not let in go.

What he does well, however, is use adults. He is able to portray himself in a positive light to parents and bosses alike. I have seen him shmooze his boss for time off and suddenly become helpful to a new players parent when 20 minutes before he practically had the kid in tears. Yup one of those. I feel that if we go to the manager we will be looking for a new store to play at. I like this store as it is close, well stocked, and i have spent with my son a bunch of c notes on models and paint over the last 2 years.

I strongly recommend you go talk to the manager anyway.

If he refuses to listen and take your word for what's going on, then he'll know why you left and took your business elsewhere.

In that case, as the saying goes, you're fethed. Primarily because you've already assumed defeat, but also because this is not a battle in which there is no room for compromise. Talk to the store manager *and* the GMs of these D&D games going on. See if there isn't another way to deploy the games and the gaming tables that creates a more equitable distribution of the playing space. A 40K game requires a table twice as large as one required for a D&D game... heck, I run a twice-monthly Dark Heresy game (D&D for 40K fans) on a coffee table that's no more than a four feet on a side... and I have six players and myself involved in the game. There's another option as well, if both groups *must* take Wednesday nights, investigate possibilities of swapping off nights... and see if there's room in any of the D&D groups to get involved in, Though the children of the parents who play in my DH game are as-yet too young to sit at our game (the oldest being now 2 years and some change), I've definitely seen parent-child groups sitting in with groups at conventions.

Heck, I would bring it up (civilly) with the kid who runs the shop on those nights. And if he's a twit about it? Well, now you have ammunition for the store manager, to tell him that you, as a customer, were treated rudely by an employee.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I still don't seem the harm in speaking to the store manager and just voicing your concern about tables being taken away on a "dedicated 40k night"

Again, the whole story is fishy, and it doesn't sound like you have the other 40k players support. I can't imagine a store owner telling a group of 40k players who each spend hundreds of dollars on models, who he has to provide large amounts of room and terrain for, "nope, sorry, play somewhere else". I don't see how 1 D&D group is ruining the night for all the 40k players. You can fit 12 D&D players on a single 40k table.

And I can't see a store owner being that oblivious. I've worked at FLGSs, you get complaints for even the smallest of infractions against peoples children, let alone a situation like the one you are describing.

And then your first reaction to this situation is passive aggressive, slimy behavior.

Something is fishy here. But if not...you talk to them. You calmly explain things, and if they don't agree with you you act like an adult and accept it, you are playing at someone elses property. If you really can't deal with the store manager or the employees, don't play there.

Lol...an advice thread where people insult the OP...awesome.

As for the 'guy' and the store? Don't have many choices man. If you talk to the manager and he blows you off, which is more than likely, suck it up and play with the tables you've got left over. Or not.

And what's the problem with switching the WH40k night to another night and dodging the guy completely?

Nobody really insulted him, they just didn't appreciate the 'tone' in the first post. Sarcasm is difficult to get across with just text alone.

Many people have suggested just having a civil , casual conversation with the manager... i mean if a person isn't willing to try and help themselves , why should anybody offer any support? (Sounds harsh, but sorry that's reality).

Ok, no one insulted him. His sarcasm just sucks, fair enough. And the guy is willing to help himself, that's why he posted the question in the first place, and didn't go right to punching the employee in the face and screaming "WAAAAAAGH!"

I've been in a similar situation (local gaming club where my crew ran Warmachine/40k was overrun with Yu-Gi-Oh players) and talking to the guys who ran the group were always understanding. After all, we're all in the same boat, aren't we?

What is wrong with people wearing tails or gas masks?

D&D and 40K attract people from all aspects of life.

When I play Arkham Horror at my friends place we are encouraged to dress in the costume of our character.

I see many people at my FLGS that wear tails or Hats with cat ears etc.

No different than wearing a civil war hat and doing some historical gaming.

I wouldn't suggest bringing in the hot girls... Most of the D&D players I know would end up getting their numbers in the least. At least one of them would likely end up getting laid out back... and that's just the girls...
