If you visit GW website with any frequency, you might have seen a Space Marine showcase they featured about a week ago. They had posted pictures of various paint marine chapters being painted by a member of one of their Stockholm GW stores. One of the models is a fantastic looking storm lords marine. I have been wracking my brain since seeing that picture, trying to replicate the red and different colors used. I want a realistic red to paint a Blood Angels army with. Can anyone provide either a breakdown (anything will help) of that storm lord red or a tutorial or your method of painting realistic red. If you dont understand what I mean by realistic, go tp GW site and look at the archived posts, you shouldnt have to go back to far.

link for the marine
but if I have to guess something:
1. prime white
2. paint red (maybe with purple, brown or blue ink)
3 wash red with red ink
4 highlight red
5 matt varnish/satin varnish

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Washing red with red doesn't seem to accomplish much. Sepia works much better.

I agree with Aerethan- washing red with red doesn't do much, like washing blue with blue. Try devlan mud, too. I don't have sepia, but devlan works for me.

ok sorry for the long delay. I wanted to post the pic originally, but started this thread on my phone and couldnt upload the pic. So here it is. Id consider myself a veteran at painting miniatures, but I can quite get the tone of this color from the citadel range. Keep in mind, citadel is the only color range available in my area. I tried mixing graveyard earth, scorched brown, beastial brown, vomit brown, everything you could think of with blood red but still cant figure out how this artist got such a soft toned red. It looks incredibly realistic to me and I plan on starting another BA army with this color (if I can replicate it).
I would really appreciate the perspective of all, but most importantly the experienced painters on dak who might be able to help me pinpoint the colors used here (including the highlights on the red). Thanks everyone

Hmmm I'd say Red Gore Base, with a shadow of red gore/black mix and going up to a red gore/blood red mix for the area highlights. They've also seemed to have edge highlighted with blazing orange.

The best color to wash red with to get natural shading is green.

Are you sure? Red is a warm colour and green is cold so there's too much of a clash and contrast there to get a good shade. Most people usually shade with a brown colour such as sepia or brown.

The best color to shade with to get natural shading is always the complement of the color. Here's another article: http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=36&page=1

I could give it a shot Contempt....what color green would you recommend -- dark angels green?
Eggroll -- I stayed away from red gore because it was giving more of a burghundy color everytime I mixed it. I will try to pay around with it some more and see what I come up with
Keep posting your ideas about the colors used!

I use Thraka wash when I'm feeling lazy, but I'd think a 2-3 parts DA green and 1 part of Orkhide Shade would probably be the best.

The flag on my Doomwheel is nothing more than a Thraka wash over Vallejo Heavy Red:
I don't know why I didn't think to post this before. But that's the kind of shade that green gives you.

Thanks for the recommendation Contempt. I would have never thought to shade with green, I will see how it turns out for me after I mix and water it down to a wash consistency.
Well that will possibly take care of the shading on the red, but what about the actual red color? I tried blending the red starting with a base of 1:1 blood red scorched brown -- I continued blending up to the light source until I was at about a 5:1 blood/scorched ratio. Then I started playing around with the highlights. It looks like whoever painted the stormlord mixed the red with a yellow to lighten it up rather than going right for blazing orange....I dont think orange was used here. And for what its worth, the painter was an employee of GW in Stockholm....which im going to make the assumption that he stuck with their line of paints.
