I know that there are plenty of threads about airbrushes and which type to go for (single action or dual action and so on), but I don't seem to have found one that covers all of the other paraphenalia. I'm about to make the jump and wondered if you knowledgeable types could see if I've missed anything obvious out?

As I see it, I need the following:

Airbrush
Hose
Compressor
Airbrush cleaner

Is there anything else I need? I'm working on a bit of a budget so may have to improvise a couple of things e.g. I will make an airbrush holder and a bottle to spray excess paint into. What else would be a good idea if the budget can stretch to it?

Now onto my thoughts on the items:

Airbrush - I'm thinking the Badger Renegade Krome. There is obviously great debate on which brush to go for and it all seems to come down to personal choice but can somebody confirm that this is a sensible 'first airbrush' choice?

Hose - Will any hose do? There are various braided hoses out there that are reasonably cheap. Should I be looking for anything in particular?

Compressor - There doesn't seem to be as much advice on compressors as there is about the brush, so I will readily admit that I am a bit lost on this one. Will the AB-AS186 or the AB-AS189 do on this page do for me? They are about half way down the page and I can't really see the difference between the two of them for the sake of a couple of pounds....

Airbrush cleaner - I'm assuming that pretty much any commercial airbrush cleaner will do....?

Thank you all in advance!

Thanks Chung. I had seen your videos previously, but wasn't able to buy an airbrush at that time and have since forgotten about your videos. I do remember that they were very informative, so I'll have a good look through them again when I get a proper chance.

Nobody else able to give a hand? I really need some advice on this please!

I'm now thinking a small Sparmax compressor although I can't afford one with a tank. Will this be a problem?

You'll be able to use a tankless compressor fine.

From my knowledge of compressors it just means that it will probably make a hell of alot more noise, as well as possibly producing hotter air.

But i'm not 100% certain on this

Youve missed the most important part of the kit, a decent respirator!

Youll also need a cleaning kit, basic set of brushes will do but a full set is better if you can.

Theres also airbrush thinner, vallejo works well with citadel and vallejo paints

What is your budget? I'll private message you. I don't know the Dakka rules here about posting links. Badger set me up with a code to order their stuff from one of their suppliers for my viewers I can give out. You can get the Krome (the one you see me and Les @ awesomepaintjob use) and the Aspire Pro there. Both excellent gear. They should get you a 40% off your order if that helps. The Aspire TC910 has the tank and the TC908 is without so just check out that website and see if anything looks good.

If you are worried about noise a compressor makes get your hands on a small compressed gas cylinder, like a 20lb CO2 fire extinguisher put a regulator on it and have it filled with Nitrogen. You can get it filled at a shop that sells welding supplies of compressed gasses. You have a few advantages with this set up, nitrogen is dry and inert so it won't react with you paint and it won't add water to your mix. Also it's quiet all you hear is the gas leaving the bottle. Lastly, a 20 pound bottle used to last me for about 5 or 6 very large kits, painting 28mm scale should last you a lot longer.

Couple more things, 20 pounds in not the weight of the cylinder but it refers to the weight of the gas it holds, if you are using any kind of inert gas make sure you have lots of ventilation, inert gasses do not support life. The last thing is very important...

NEVER USE OXYGEN AS A PROPELLANT!

If you are using enamel paint the O2 will react and you will have a flamer not a painter in your hand.
