What would you do? I know the scenario is extremely rare and would probably never come up, but it almost happened the other day. How would you handle this situation:

You're playing a Tyranid reserve list and your opponent is playing a DoA list. On Turn 1, he rushes about 20 assault marines in a conga line down the left side of the board. On your turn 1, you can't roll a 3+ to save your life and the few units that do come in are on the wrong side. Turn 2, he conga lines across the entire left side of the board (with some decent run rolls). Then, on your turn, some reserves come in and are forced to deploy on the left side of the table...but you can't deploy any models on the table while staying more than 1" away from an enemy model.

In short, your opponent has models spaced out along the entire table edge and you need to place your models there. What would happen? Are the models simply destroyed? Would they be forced to stay in reserves? Would you say they come in on the other side of the table?

I'm leaning towards "the models would be destroyed" because that's what usually happens. If you can't place something due to an enemy model within 1", it's usually destroyed. But I know this is a weird scenario. What do you think?

If a model is not able to move completely onto the table it is destroyed.

They would be destroyed, this happened in ArdBoyz a few years ago White Scars outflank vs Tau Kroot heavy. The Tau player infiltrated around all 3 edges shutting down the Bike Army @ Deployment

Not exactly; the White Scars player, who wasn't using Khan, was simply trying to move everything on from normal reserves. The infamous picture of the Tau player's smug grin with his 6ft line of Kroot while the other player and a judge were flipping through the rulebook in the background is hard to forget Still, the moral of the story is the same: units arriving from reserve that aren't able to completely enter the field are destroyed. See the rule book FAQ for clarification.

To be fair, there have been reports of this exact situation coming up plenty of other times. This ETC picture of White Scars vs Tau is the most famous example, but it's definitely not the only time an army has been destroyed for reserving everything.

To the OP: Yes, this is a totally legitimate tactic. Now that you're aware of it, avoid it.

Just a question.

If the other army had vehicles, could those vehicles tank shock the kroot out of the way first? then move everything else on?

Very annoying of you to say...and very rude. I don't insult other countries so I would appreciate it if you would do me the same respect.

As for the topic at hand...yes you can be stopped outflanking if your opponent lines up along the edges like that. Typically squads like that don't live long, but it could be annoying.

With a big smile, I must grant the kneeling man in the picture great respect. If I was his opponent, I think I would be blindingly angry for about 5 minutes, then concede the game and try to accept being a small part of an epic bit of history.

Or feel really dumb for not taking Khan when playing a White Scars army AND then reserving my entire force. I understand doing one or the other... but both?

Regardless, EPIC win!

So you had to reserve, while staring at 40 some infiltrating troops?

Unless ETC plays blind lists, dumb

Nope, and (from what I've heard) the Tau player even asked him if he was sure he wanted to reserve everything and mentioned that he had a lot of infiltrators. Course, this was rom a couple years ago, before the FAQ, so the WS player may have thought he could et around or past or through them somehow. You'd be amazed (well, maybe not) at how many people thought they could move through blocking units or assault from off the table......................

I've tried it too.

Almost made it down the short table edge in hopes to auto kill Squad of Sents. Missed it by about an inch.
You can't see it but there was a mob of boys strung out down the short table edge as I ran to block as much as possible.

I used to do it all the time with the old IG codex. Nothing say blocking the side like a whole platoon with Infiltrate (Light Infantry doctrine). Only used it in special circumstances, like Spearhead against an Outflanking Nid army............ hehehehhee, lotsa fun!

Moral of the story - don't bring an entire reserve army.

I have and it does decently.

The real moral is - don't go all reserve when your opponent has lots of infiltrators and can block off your entire board edge before you roll on.

Fair point. I usually play against completely blind lists.

I saw the photo example of being two extreme tactics clashing - a sort of scissors, paper, stone effect.
