Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

Get this book
It's as simple as that. It's really cheap to get into, for one thing. You can chose the scale you want your minis to be in (i.e. 15mm, 20mm, 1/72 etc.) based on what you want, and what you local hobby shop carries. It does away with (mostly) the "I go, you go mechanic" in that it is much more intermingled. You can even create cool scenarios. Such as WW3, and other. They have a bunch of reference material for stuff like Black Hawk Down, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and more. It is very adaptable and balanced. The pics are very ugly, and do not deserve to exist.

WWIII is a lot of fun I must admit. But probley my two fav books by AAG are Ambush Valley ( Vietnam damn its like reading a history book and I love it) and TW.
Don't get me wrong FoF is a great ruleset, but I really like "The 'Nam" guess it has something to do with growing up watching Vietnam Movies =o]
Tomorrows War is just like the main FoF book you can use it for just about any Sci-Fi setting. My only very small complaint about The main FoF rule book is the layout, dunno why just doesn't flow properly for me for some reasion. Now Tomorrow's War, that is just sexy sexy gold

I know, btw you did a great job on the background info
I've been watching all the old Nam movies again so I can steal get ideas for games.
I think this line sums the whole book up "It's fun for the VC/PAVN player also" ( ie me)

Do whatever works best for the group you play with. Personally I like the late 80's that way you get some of the cool toys like T-80's,M1's and Challenger 1's. Challey's and Chieftain's are just dead smexy imho.

It dont have a points system...
I generally suggest starting with a platoon of infantry, a few vehicles and working from there.

Big P wrote:It dont have a points system... I generally suggest starting with a platoon of infantry, a few vehicles and working from there. It is more scenario based. Thus whatever the scenario calls for i.e. 30 Hajis vs. 5 Marines. There are samples rules on the site, AARs, and I would recommend that you check out the forum.

Trondheim wrote:So I looked at their website and I dare say I am intriuged. What is the ideal point size or model count for a army in this rather refreshing game?
Force on Force isn't really designed around the point system where X guy always = Y points. It is very heavily scenario based where the mission (if you are using one) will tell you what troops to use.
FoF isn't really a 'lets go to the local game store and find random opponents' like 40k, FoW, Warmachine are. In my personal experience once you move away from the book missions you have to think what you and you opponents what to achieve. Right now I am in the process of building a Vietnam board because my gaming partner and I really like "The Nam". So we got to think what we want to achieve with out gaming experience? Do we just want to do a few one off games to really get the hang of the rules? Probably. Once that is done what do we want to do, search and destroy Sweep and Clear missions? Fire base Sieges? Long Range Recon Patrols (LRRP's)? Suspected VC village clearance?
When do we want to play ie what time frame? early 60's when the Americans still thought they had a chance? Late 60's early 70's when a lot of American troops where 'drugged up'? Somewhere in the middle? Do you want to use Americans, Republic of Korea, ANZAC? forces? Large scale battles like Ia Drang? Tet Offensive ?
There really is a lot to think about, of course you can just pick up and play but I am the kind of guy who likes to name all my little figgies and give then back stories ( Dak Mong was kidnapped at a early age and forced to grow up in a state run orphanage where he saw the Glorious Fight against the French and their final defeat at Dien Bien Phu, after this Dak saw the glory and duty of communism and willing game himself to the cult of Ho Chi Min) might not be totally accurate but you get the point.
I found the best thing to do was find a time period that you like, pick up some 20mm models( only weirdos play with 15mm...weirdos ) and stumble through the rules. Eventually it will just click and you and your opponents will have a good laugh about all the mistakes you used to make. Fine a time period you like, read some history books about how stuff was organized back then and build your forces around that.
As to size, platoon size is a good starting place. 20mm armies are cheap enough that one persona can pick up two for around 100-150 Canadian dollars and have a nice size force and a extra one to suckerentice another player in. I picked up a USMC modern force and a Iraqi fedayeen force from Elhiem for a little over 100£ ( you don't need two that big, I had all the bells and whistles for my USMC 50 cal snipers, medics, heavy machine guns etc. I am also so temped to paint up the iraqi's in blue and use them as cobra troopers, they look just like them. =o] ) Great thing about 20mm scale is you can use 1:72 scale plastic model kits for your vehicles and Air Support if you want to. There are a lot of company's out there that also make resin 20mm scale vehicles, so the internet is your friend.
Think about what era you want to do then go from there, shop around in your local game stores and online. There are some great deals out there. But remember one thing "Charlie owns the night" =o]
Good Luck Commander.
