I was very dissatisfied with the lacklustre rules for the flayed ones. They did not seem to be worth the expensive finecast models, and just didn't seem to be adequate for an elite choice. Here's my take on them. I apologize in advance if it seems OP Flayed One - 15pts a model Elite Choice WS4 BS4 S4 T4 I2 A3 Ld10 Sv4+ Unit Size: 5-20 Wargear = Filthy Claws, disturbing apparel Filthy Claws = The Flayed One's claws are coated with rotten pieces of meat and old blood. This naturally is a breeding ground for bacteria. The Flayed One has poisoned (4+) attacks. They count as one weapon, and as such will not provide the bonus for 2 close combat weapons. Disturbing Apparel = The Flayed One is draped in the rotting skin of their victims, and their gears are often clogged with the flesh and blood of their prey. Any enemy unit in CC with a unit of Flayed Ones must take a leadership test at the beginning of the round. If they fail, they must reroll all successful hits against the flayed ones. This ability has no effect on fearless models; they simply are not phased. Special Rules - Deepstrike, infiltrate, the madness, Fearless, the hunger, Resurrection Protocols The Hunger = Flayed Ones may never consolidate after close combat. They are too busy feeding. -------------------------------------------- EDIT 04/15/2012 Lowered points, added an attack to be more in line with the official version. Removed the madness rule for simplification and increased Ld to 10. Changed it back to elite, due to the finecast models and the rules.

Honestly I think you could cut just about everything out of that, except for the Filthy Claws, and keep them at their current codex price tag and they would be 'fixed.'
4 attacks each on the charge that reroll to wound and can outflank? Sure, they don't penetrate armor, but they can swamp the enemy in attacks. For 13 points a model, that sounds pretty damn nifty to me.

But yeah, you do have a point. I just wanted to make it fluffy And I wanted to keep the old terrifying visage rule from the previous edition. I'm just old like that I guess. Ok, modification of the rules, for streamlining reasons. Also I increased the squad cap. Needs: Deepstrike -> assault. Fix'd. Failing that, Rending CC attacks.

Lol
I thought of giving them rending, but Wraiths already have that covered, I'm afraid. Poison would be enough anyway, for a troop choice.
Now how to justify charging after DSing...

I honestly think Fearless is enough to make Flayed Ones useful (Not good but not worthless)
A 20 FO hordes which cannot break and cannot be swept with Reanimation Protocol and 3 base attacks each isn't a terrible unit in my honest opinion.
The unit you've described isn't bad, I actually like it but the current Flayed ones might improve anyway from potential changes to Deepstrike and Infiltrate in 6th Ed but I do agree that their ridiculously overpriced models makes me wonder what GW were thinking.

Freaky Flayed One

Being a big fan of Flayed ones in DoW, I was hugely disappointed with unit on the table Top and the very expensive Finecast models sealed the deal, though I have converted 5 warriors to Flayed ones for fun.
Now to your PR:
Flayed Ones current stats
13 pts per Model
Elite
WS4 BS1 S4 T4 I2 A3 Ld10 Sv4+
5 - 20
Deep strike
Infiltrate
RP
I really like your version, it match the models fluff well, these are supposed to be utterly terrifying mindless killers with a never ending need for flesh.
I think if you added a points cost for Filthy Claws, it would have to be quite low, it would balance out benefits of the wargear. Disturbing Apparel could be seen as OP, if it only work on units with less than base Ld 8 that would seem fair.
The Special Rules are fine. The Hunger is particularly good, fluff wise.
As you have stated the current Flayed Ones are really just boring, A solely CC unit with no unique wargear or Special Rules, even though its fluff and model are very unique to the Necrons race.

Thank You! I can't believe I forgot to add RP to the special rules. And I call myself a Necron Player The disturbing apparel was based heavily off of the old Terrifying Visage special rule from the previous edition of the necron codex, which is why it may seem a bit imbalanced. I wouldn't want to penalize models with low ld though; that just doesn't seem fair. I suppose though I can change it from "hit only on a 6" to "reroll all successful hits" Automatically Appended Next Post: Voodoo_Chile wrote:I honestly think Fearless is enough to make Flayed Ones useful (Not good but not worthless)

That is true, but I want to make the flayed ones good
They're from the old codex; they should be given some respect.
Warriors, Wraiths, Destroyers and Immortals got a boost. So should the creepy psychopaths doing buffalo bill impressions.

Still saddens me that Flayed Ones got nerfed in every respect: Worse rules, worse models, higher model cost... No one will ever buy them. Yeesh. I can only assume the old metal models were nearly impossible to Finecast properly. As if we'd notice.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

I know right?
It's sad really that they got so heavily penalized. Its not as if they deserved it either; hardly anyone took them because their original rules were hardly spectacular and they weren't worth the elite slot nor the points. They were still better than the new ones though, thanks to their I4, 3+ save and terrifying visage rule. The new ones gained an attack and a points reduction but they still weren't worth the elite slot nor the finecast models.
