Not every Xenos in existence is worthy of the designation of Xenos Horrificus - that wonderful rubber stamp of "Shoot it before it moves!"
Given that at the edges of known space Rogue Traders and Radical Inquisitors are likely to rub elbows with non-humankind (I'm lookin at you Ravenor ), i'm looking for BL and GW fluff where such encounters occur and odd long-term arrangements are made.
And for your own personal opinions - what sort of Xenos would one find tolerable?
There have been cases of such long term agreements drawn up between the above two groups and
Kroot Mercs, Eldar Rangers, and even the occasional Ork Freebootaz.

In Eisenhorn: Xenos, Eisenhorn works with a task force of Eldar at the end.
That part really shows how ignorant of xenos the Imperium is. Eisenhorn, a veteran Ordo Xenos Inquisitor, is completely ignorant to what a "Aspect Warrior" is.

While the average citizen would know next to nothing about the Eldar, what they did know would almost certainly be incorrect, Eisenhorn's ignorance might be more due to each Inquisitor's personal field of knowledge. There are doubtless plenty of Inquisitors that know a fair deal of the nature of Eldar and Aspect Warriors (as demonstrated in the Doom of Mymeara). Eisenhorn's lack of knowledge is probably due to the fact that his field of expertise isn't about the Eldar, rather than a general reflection of the Inquisition's knowledge as a whole.

Off universe, personally I'd like an Eldar girlfriend. Yes, I am quite serious.
In universe, Eldar and Tau are infinitely preferrable to Orks, Tyranids, or even Necrons. Off topic, having read the original Planet of the Apes novel recently, I'm willing to cut deals with Chaos to commit genocide against apes.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

I think Xenos Horrificus is really only brought out for things like Tyrannids, Barghesi, Hrud and Slaugth.
So barbaric/violent/mindless as to be impossible to secure cooperation.
Many Xenos species still hate the Imperium for the Great Crusade beat down that was supplied to them, courtesy of the Emperor.
Their are some other minor alien empires mentioned that would probably be good candidates for working with the Imperium, although I'd probably stick to Tau (and their allies) and Eldar for the most part.

Agreed.
Hrud shouldn't even be called sentient at all; I'd rather call them vermin.

The hrud are intelligent, they just don't buy into the whole concept of "Permanent dwellings". They are masters of melta, plasma, and the ever odd fusil technology with imbues warp energy into their plasma guns in a stable manner. The imperium can't even make stable plasma guns or warp technology on their own, much less combine them. And as both the Hrud and the Jokaero were made by the Old Ones to fight the Necrons and the C'tan as it became increasingly clear that they were horribly outmatched once the Crons got FTL technology, I doubt that the Old One's would have repeated the Jokaero's schtick in the Hrud. Additionally, Xenology shows that they do in fact have a culture, it even has a religion.

AFAIK Hrud are vermin, always will be.
And an STC might have data on stable plasma technology. Jokaero are the only xenos race under Imperial protection, sice their abilities are useful to the Imperium, and they're not really sentient.

In one of the Ciaphas Cain novels the planet he is on is also part occupied by the Tau. Relations are strained, but they co-existed (relatively) peacfully...
Kroot, Tau and Eldar are the main three that the Imperium could work with. The Jokaero as mentioned are already under Imperial protection and there are likely other minor species in a similar vein. Freebooterz I think are unlikely to work with 'umies, especially not officially, but rogue traders have been known to co-opt their services.

1) Xenos species lacking sentience but useful to Humans (grox and the like) = accepted
2) Xenos species lacking sentience but not useful to Humans = destroy
3) Xenos species with minimal sentience but useful to Humans = tolerate/place under Imperial protection
4) Xenos species with minimal sentience but not useful to Humans = destroy
5) Xenos species with sentience but is not tainted by Chaos or outright violent = ignore as much as possible; potential ally against common foe
6) Xenos species with sentience but is violent/tainted = destroy if possible

Off universe, personally I'd like an Eldar girlfriend. Yes, I am quite serious.
I know a number of tall women who treat all men (and most other women) as beneath them, are continually condescending and will, in all likelihood, consider anything you do as to be equivalent to the antics of a particularly dim puppy.
Are you sure about that?

Yes.
Assuming those tall women are Farseers, then to even the odds let's use the evolved Human model from the Emperor's long-term plan. Since Humans now have stable psychic abilities, then the life-span and intelligence should be increased proportionately to the level of psychic power, with the average Human now on par with the average Eldar. At the very least I won't be a dimwitted puppy, but someone who can at least understand her degree of knowledge and power.

An unfortunate truth that all men, whether Human or Eldar or otherwise must accept. Allow me to rephrase: "...someone who can at least partly understand her knowledge and power..."
