Edited to add Dakka gallery links
Hey all, Lurker for ages, first post since I am actually now getting into the hobby. Over the last few months I've been trying my hand at painting minis and, as the topic says, I am trying to learn as much as I can in as few models as I can (limited funds and all). This is model 20 or so of my orks. Most of the rest are boyz (you can see other examples in the gallery My Dakka Gallery Edit: removed imgur link
Edit - resized & thumbnail'd
You can see the rest (as well as other boys) with the link above.

So there he is - I haven't touched the knives yet, but am thinking a blend from deep red at the base to black at the tip, highlighted with bright red/orange, but really have no experience with power weapons etc. Also, I know the boots are wrong, but I don't know how to fix them. Can anyone else share some light on that part?
Lastly, I *deeply appreciate* C&C - from amateur and pro alike - because how else can one learn, right? So don't hold back - feel free to comment on this snikrot, or any of the models in the gallery.
Thanks so much guys, and please let me know if I've inadvertantly violated any forum rules - I will fix any such things asap.
Regards,
Boosch

Do you have MS Paint, etc?
Because really the only thing you need for "resizing" is to crop these photos. They're far better than many of my own photos are, I think, but the big thing is you have a lot of "blank" space floating around.
That said:
I love Snikrot. I've been debating getting the model for a long time. You did him a great justice, he looks fantastic.

Unfortunately I am at work - so no real access to any image manip software they even locked MSPaint - and while I tried to cheat and printscreen the image to sth smaller, I couldnt then get that from clipboard to image file, so no luck there.
Appreciate the compliment - anything you'd change / any flaws you see in the model tho? Did you perchance take a look at the imgur gallery (or do you think anyone will) sorry for the bombard of questions, but tryin to get a vibe on this community quickly so that I dont get lost in the spam filter

First off, you paint very neatly. your layering are also smooth and correct on the right spots.
You also arnt afraid to spend time to paint out all the individual details.
With all that said, you are a hard worker and should improve amazingly fast.
Im not sure if this is WIP or finished.
But the cloth for example can use the same additional highlights you did with his arm.
Next would be the lenses, while they have nice pop, but it looks like a glossy blue hemisphere, than lenses.
The blade and the chains can use more high lights ( and the gaps between the chains can use more depth to separate the different chains )
I dont know how to use imagur, but dakka does have gallery ( I highly recommend you upload on to the forum )
and they have thumbnails you can copy paste into this.
the other thing would be personal taste.
But the squares on his backpack and the stripes on his arm, you only have them painted on one side, and it feels incomplete.

This is *definitely* WiP - I havent touched the knives at all yet, and I am still working on the backpack / feet / base.
Great! Many thanks for the compliments and tip on the dakka gallery - I'll need to see if I can xfer the images without any photo-edit software (IE: Here at work)
I *really* appreciate your comments: I struggled with the leather / cloth - can you recommend any particular techniques for getting good blending in such small spaces? I tried using very very thin paints (sometimes called Juicing i think) like I do for skin, but I cannot seem to get enough control, so it just sorta highlights the whole shebang. With leg-cloth I can cheat and just drybrush - but I'd like to learn how to do better there. With straps I'm a bit hopeless - Cannot drybrush them, cannot seem to layer well - is there any advice you can offer there? I am all ears!
RE Lenses - this is my first attempt at any sort of lens / glass orb thing. Something looks wrong about them but I cannot pick it out. Any idea how one can create a sense of depth to the glowey orbs?
RE the highlighting on the chains - I think that will come with time - I am having a lot of trouble picking out highlights without obliterating the shadows - or applying shadows without obliterating the highlights - on those spots. Short of picking out each 'bead' of chain, any suggestions here? Or is it a sorta a 'no shortcuts' technique on bits like this?
Oh - and with the squares - I totally did *not* notice that I did that - for the arm i can touch up to complete it - but I am scared to touch the backpack again w/o incurring the wrath of the paint gods, so I think that one wil remain untouched. Thanks for pointing it out though! Next Time!
Again, thanks loads for the C&C!

That's something to keep in mind for when you get home then. I've been using Windows Live Photo Gallery of late, it's fairly easy to do good crops that way.
Appreciate the compliment - anything you'd change / any flaws you see in the model tho?
Not really. It's very clean and is definitely a model which would catch eyes when it's on the tabletop.
Did you perchance take a look at the imgur gallery
I did. I liked what I saw for the most part.
or do you think anyone will
This is a bit of a roll of the dice. Many people (myself included) tend to not like to have to click to outside of Dakka to see things. Part of it comes from sites likely being blocked by work filters, etc--but for my own self it just feels kinda silly.
If you want quick, reliable and easy feedback all the time?
Dakka's gallery is the place to upload. It doesn't get blocked by most work filters, and what's more it allows for constant in-site feedback.

No problem! The community is pretty laid-back here for the most part.
Something to bear in mind, not applying to your stuff, is that not always will the reply times be fairly quick. Many P&M blogs/threads can go for days without replies. It tends to be a fine line between interest, the level of skill of the poster, and just how unique the post itself is.

Multi quote time xD ( im bad at this )
I *really* appreciate your comments: I struggled with the leather / cloth - can you recommend any particular techniques for getting good blending in such small spaces? Personally I use vallejo paint, and that itself makes my painting technique very different than people using GW paint.
You may hear people always saying use thin milky paint, yet I don't do that with vallejo.
What I do is, use a flat brush, something wide for the next color up from base coat, similar to dry brush, it'll catch the next level of raised area.
and then the lighter to lightest parts on the folds.
RE Lenses - this is my first attempt at any sort of lens / glass orb thing. Something looks wrong about them but I cannot pick it out. Any idea how one can create a sense of depth to the glowey orbs?
There are numerous tutorials on lenses, yet I find this one most accurate. Mostly due to the painter took in account the "thickness" of a glass.
Never use round edged paint brushes when you have trouble not obliterating shadows xD
flat brush , angle it abit while brushing = near impossible to fail.
Oh - and with the squares - I totally did *not* notice that I did that - for the arm i can touch up to complete it - but I am scared to touch the backpack again w/o incurring the wrath of the paint gods, so I think that one wil remain untouched. Thanks for pointing it out though! Next Time!
Thats fine, Im like that too. But a lazy way would be painting it with a darker color ( something not so starchy white that just screams unfinished )
Again, thanks loads for the C&C!
Thank you for accepting it! ( lots of people ask for CC and dont accept it xD )

This is what I came up with. ( Note this type of lense is called Plano Convex, it has a thickness which I like because it shows depth )

*excellent* I can completely see the difference here between what I've got and this - the most noticable is the darker shadow at the *top* of the sphere/lens - such a subtle change would make a world of difference. I'll need to work on that
Thanks for taking the time to put together such a response!
