The other day I introduced my 10 year old brother into the 40k scene as I did it when I was his age,
So I did what any good bro would do and bought him Black Reach starter Kit,
He wants a Dark looking SM so we are stuck with either Black Templar's, Or Blood Angels or does anyone else have any suggestions?
Also The pack supplies Ultra Marines, Do they have to be ultra marines or could I choose a different chapter?
Sorry for the question but to be honest this trip down my childhood has refilled my love for 40k Thanks guys

Why would they have to be ultramarines? yu cann paint them any colour you want. A good way of un ultramarinificating them is by cutting the ultramarine iconography on it.
Blood angels are bright red, so arent very dark though one of their successors the Flesh Tearers however, is quite dark.

Theres also dark angels. Their fluff is dark they are dark and as well as this their name actually is "Dark Angels" to get the dark feeling across.

There is nothing Ultramarinish about the space marines in the Starter Box other than how they are painted on the cover and in the book. Paint them how you want.

I used mine for Black Templars. Why don't the two of you flip through Lexicanum's Loyalist Space Marines List and look at a variety of Space Marines. You can read a little of each chapter and pick out a color scheme that you'd like. Or, just use them for inspiration and come up with your own chapter.

I would strongly suggest that you do BA or SW, anything but vanilla marines. Every other chapter is directly better then the ultramarines and the warriors of smurf are the jack of all trades, masters of none. At least with BA you can take jumpers as troops and all the other cool stuff
