I am working to get my Black Templars fully painted, and have run into a wall deciding how to base them. I am theming my army off the Armageddon Crusade, so ash wastes are the general scheme, but having the marines just running across flat grey ash looks very boring. I am thinking of some kind of raised rock or ruins, but I can't decide which direction to go in.
If you want the whole "rocky terrain" look, just get some cork plate from a craft store. I have 1/2" cork that I bought from IKEA, they are actually for putting hot pots and pans on. I also have some thin cork, 1/4" or so, that I bought from Michael's. I use the thin stuff in multiple layers and the thick stuff if I want one big chunk of rock. You can also get bark chunk mulch from Home Depot or Lowes. I got a 30 lbs. bag for around $3 and it makes very convincing rock formations. If you do do that, I suggest coating both cork and bark in a thin layer of PVA/water mix to protect it from damage.

I've thought of using cork, but it seems every time I go to the FLGS I see more and more people using it, its getting to the point that every army is based on the same terrain, just with a different drybrushing scheme. Most don't even bother to flock it, just glue on the cork and paint it.
I really don't want my army to just blend in with every other SM on the board.

Who cares what other people do? There is more to using cork that just dry brushing it. The bark mulch is much less common and it looks killer. No matter what you use, you can add bits and pieces to make your bases stand out over the others.
Make your piece of cork or bark smaller than the base and add some various sized rock litter to the open spaces. Have a bits box? Grab some left over boltguns or helmets and break them and add them to the rock litter. Get some Army Painter: Battlefields grass tufts and add those. Secret Weapon Miniatures sells a Sack o' Skulls that you can add to bases (they go great with a ashen wasteland theme). Cruise some bits sellers and get various bits of the enemy factions to add the bases ( the Armageddon Crusade was against the Orks, right?). Doing these little things really show that you put hard work and thought into completing each mini. The goal is not to make the base so overstated that it takes away from the mini, but to make a little scene for each troop that is unique and adds depth to the whole piece.

Throw a few rocks on there, or some gun bits or other pieces of burnt trash.
Make the colors a bit different...use some metallic on some of the debris...

Fully Painted armies:

and if you wanna make your bases stand out you can still use the same materials but you will need to be more creative!
Cork is a great product because it comes in many different forms; fine, coarse, thick, thin... whatever you want...
that bark scooty mentioned is also a great product, and seems to be the new flavor of the month, since more and more people start to use it.
back to the cork, all the bases in the picture and video's below are made with cork. dont wanna promote my channel or anything but i dont have pics of the mini's, just vids.
