Ok, so here are some shots of the Abyssal Warriors, in various stages of completion. Most of them now just need to be painted, but some of them need some more work with Green Stuff

WARNING: The Abyssal Warriors Chapter (and by extension their Second Founding Chapters) features female members, including some of the commanders. If this will cause you to rage, please leave this page now. If not, then please, read on. The models themselves will be no different because I do not have the skill to make nescessary conversions, nor can I paint faces at all, which rules out adding female heads.

The Abyssal Warriors are a mysterious Chapter. All records pertaining to the Chapter, barring the records kept by the Chapter itself, have been wiped. The Chapter claims to be the 2nd Legion, but has not released the identity of their Primarch. Initial reports suggest the Legion was trapped in their home system, known as the Abyss, shortly after the end of the Horus Heresy after the Legion withdrew all assets to reorganise the Legion after the casualties they sustained. The Storm distorted time in the system, and whilst for the galaxy ten millenia have passed since they vanished, for the Legion it has been barely two. Behind the Warp Storm they were tormented time and again by daemonic assaults, but none so bloody as the Nurgle attack two centuries (system time) before the storm abated, known as the Surge, which claimed two Chapters worth of Space Marines, and completely eradicated the Syrants Chapter

The Legion kept up to date with newer technologies due to Space Hulks and individual wreaks that drifted out of the Warp. One such ship, a shattered Imperial Fists Strike Cruiser, contained a complete copy of the Codex Astartes. Upon seeing the Imperial Fists, the most stubborn of the original legions, had accepted the teachings of Gullimann, the Abyssal Warriors adopted them as well, reasoning that most other Space Marine Chapters had done so as well. The time distortion caused by the Warp Storm has meant that the Abyssal Warriors have a much higher than average number of otherwise ancient relics, ranging from Land Raider Proteuses to Tartaros Pattern Terminator Armour, even the ancient Contemptor Pattern Dreadnoughts, which they are able to field in much higher numbers than many other Chapters, and it is not uncommon to see entire battle forces using only Dreadnoughts as their weapon platforms

The Second Founding Chapters that were founded from the Abyssal Warriors Legion are; The Death's Heralds, a macarbre Chapter that often utilises weapons derived from a Nurgle Daemon weapon, citing that the enemies of Man should suffer as their Battle Brothers and Sisters did. They lost almost their entire Honour Guard to Nurgle Forces, and the surviving Honour Guard from the Syrants Chapter stepped into the gap. The Void Blades, a more close-combat focussed Chapter that uses rapid deployment and swift blade-work to destroy their opponents. The Hammers of Minerva, a blunt Chapter that prefers to smash their way through an opponent's line with the use of heavy armour. The Falcons, undisputed masters of aerial combat and deep strike assaults, they will mercilessly strike at the enemy's weakest points, severing the chain of command. The Primarch's Children, they suffered heavy casualties at the hands of the Nurgle forces, being reduced to three effective Companies, the 3rd, 5th and 9th, and elements of the 1st and 8th, yet they refused aid in the form of extra Marines from other Chapters. As a result, The Primarch's Children prefer a defensive stance where their lower numbers will not damage them as greatly, until they can restore their Chapter. The Syrants were a brutal chapter that favoured close-combat to the exclusion of almost all other types of warfare, rarely fielding vehicles incapable of directly participating in close combat. However, this very style of fighting cost them greatly against Nurgle daemons, the taint of disease surrounding each daemon claiming many Space Marines

Ok, onto the models!

Firstly, the Chapter Master himself, Kascran Stormfeld, Lord of the Abyss. His weapons are a quick wit, a deep-set hatred of Nurgle, as well as his Relic Blade, Nurgle's Bane, and his Storm Bolter loaded with the same Specialist ammunition used by Sternguard Veterans. He is a shrewd, pragmatic commander, constantly weighing up the risks and potential rewards of any order, always staying a step ahead of the enemy and anticipating their next moves as only a Space Marine Chapter Master can

This kit was made almost entirely from the Grey Knight Terminator set, with the exception of the Banner and other aesthetic additions. It is complete barring a bit of green stuff work to cover up a few bits of Grey Knight heraldry

Here we have Akra Valkyraj, head of the Abyssal Warriors Honour Guard, and one of the aforementioned female commanders. She is Kascran's direct second in command, and should he be incapacitated she will immediatly take command until he is fit to lead again or, in the case he is killed, until a new Chapter Master is selected. She often uses a Jump Pack, and the sight of a full squad of Honour Guard hurtling into battle has caused many a foe to flee before they even touch the ground

The axe I made using some spares from Space Wolves kits, and the Storm bolter itself came from a Dreadnought kit. I removed the ammo feed, and used a magazine from a Grey Knights kit instead

This is Chief Librarian Clarus Prefectus, Watcher of the Mind. He is a formidable psyker, capable of unleashing devastating attacks or boosting the prowess of his allies. He is rarely seen without his Jump Pack and Plasma Pistol, and his Force Halberd never leaves his side

This model was actually made from a series of different kits. The legs and Jump Pack came from a poorly constructed Jump Marine that I made when I was first starting out, the chest, helmet and halberd come from the Grey Knights kit, and the plasma pistol arm from my brother's Space Wolves spares

Presenting the 1st Company Captain, Captain Singultus, Death's Messanger. A very practical fighter, he believes that those under his command should be ready for any eventuality, and this is reflected in his choice of weapons. His Power Sword allows him to dispatch of most infantry in close combat, whereas his Combi-melta and Auxiliary grenade launcher grant him the ability to engage a wider range of foes, and he often takes Hellfire rounds in his Bolter to bring down larger organics. His armour is less decorated than that of his peers, operating under the logic that if the enemy can't pick out the commander, severing the chain of command is much more difficult

I made the grenade launcher from a Lascannon scope and a box mag from a Storm Bolter. Mounting the thing on the arm was a real pain, but I think it works, or as well as I could make it work

Here is the 2nd Company Captain, Captain Boeur, The Silent Watcher. More reserved than many of his fellow commanders, he takes fewer risks, but will not shy away from taking one if the returns are good enough. He utilises a Power Weapon and a Storm Bolter, and is rarely seen in battle without the banner bearing his personal heraldry

This was one of the more simple commanders to create, though the legs did give me grief for a while

This is the 3rd Company Captain, Captain Kaneth, The Chapter's Shield. A stubborn individual, both on the battlefield and off, he will not relinquish an objective to the enemy without making them pay in blood for every step they take. He utilises Terminator Armour to further this goal, the armour coupled with the shield provided by the Iron Halo making Kaneth a very difficult foe to bring down. His combi-plasma allows him more flexability in bringing down heavily armoured infantry at range, and in close combat his Power Sword makes short work of any resistance

This model requires a bit more Green Stuff work because of the Grey Knights heraldry, but I'm almost finished with the Green Stuff. The Combi-plasma was difficult to attach, and I had to use some Green Stuff to cover the gap in the wrist

Presenting the 7th Company Captain, Captain Istria, Wanton Death. Istria is known for her almost reckless charges into the heart of the enemy, and uses the mass of her bike as a weapon on the assault. She is a headstrong commander, but will not turn down good advice when presented to her. As the Captain of the Bike Company, she is always seen at the front of the Spear head, cleaving a path through the enemy lines

I made the Captain's Grenade launcher in the same way as Captain Singultus', using a lascannon scope and a storm bolter mag. Attaching the power weapon arm was very difficult, as it kept falling off or sticking to my fingers

Here we have the 8th Company Captain, Captain Velox, the Syrant Captain. Captain Velox was originally the 8th Company Captain of the Syrants Chapter, a second-founding Chapter of the Abyssal Warriors. In the wake of the Nurgle attack, the Captain and the survivors of the Syrants 8th Company were added to the under-strength Abyssal Warriors 8th Company, the title of the 8th Company Captain changed to 'The Syrant Captain' in honour of the Chapter's sacrifice

This model was fun to make, but finding the power weapons was quite difficult

Stop! Hammer time! Provided by the 9th Company Captain, Captain Diruo, the Anvil's Guardian. Diruo is a very collected leader, and whilst he does not speak often outside of battle, when he does speak he always says words of wisdom, and is often made Force Commander in forces utilising elements from various companies due to his firm leadership. However, he excells on the defence, as is fitting the Devastator Company, and often fields his Company beside the 3rd Company, where he can work closely with the like-minded Captain Kaneth

Diruo was a challenging model to make, mostly because of the Inquisition marks on the hammers. However, it is definatly worth it to see the opponent's reaction upon seeing a Terminator Captain with twin Thunder Hammers

And the final commander I have made for the Abyssal Warriors, the 10th Company Captain, Captain Lorator, the Way-Watcher. As the Captain of the scout company, he has acted as a mentor to many Space Marines in the Chapter and indeed, some of the Captains themselves. This makes him a well-respected figure among the Captains, and many go to him for advice regarding tactical situations. He, like Istria, prefers to fight from a bike, and often leads squads of Scout Bikers on their covert missions

I made the Combi-flamer from the front of a heavy flamer and a Combi-melta. I decided to make the power weapons prongs on the bike when I realised that he wouldn't be able to hold the power weapon

That's it for this post!

Ok, onto the two commanders I have prepared for the Void Blades

Artume Hecate is the Chief Librarian of the Void Blades, and was mentored by Clarus during her time as a Codicier. Her weapons, beyond her formidable psychic powers, are the Gauntlet of Retribution, an armoured gauntlet that constantly blazes with Warp-fire, and the Staff of Divine Armour, a force staff built into a Storm Shield containing an ancient shield-device that extends its protective qualities further than just the Librarian. Clad in Terminator Armour, she is often seen accompanying deep striking squads of Terminators, using her powers to sow havoc, tearing apart the armoured plates of tanks and summoning Warp-constructs to destroy her foes

The staff and shield were difficult to get right, and the top part of the staff kept falling over so I had to hold it there until the glue had dried, which took an annoyingly long time. I also needed more green stuff for this model due to the abundance of Inquisition symbols

1st Company Captain Achlys Ratri of the Void Blades. A formidable opponent in close combat, none of her seconds in other Chapters have ever been able to best her in single combat. However, she does not focus purely on her own swordplay in a fight. Indeed, she will be calculating where her forces should strike next and how even whilst crossing blades with the enemy. She wields the sardonically-named 'Tools of Peace', a relic blade and a poisoned power knife. The knife was believed to have been wielded by the Primarch, and was won from the hands of the Death's Heralds 1st Company Captain in a tournament

I'm less satisfied with this model than many of my others, though I don't know why...

Ok, now for the Death's Heralds commander I have done so far

1st Company Captain Imset Charon of the Death's Heralds. Just as macarbre as the Chapter Master himself, Charon is also on a mission of redemption. Ever since loosing the Dagger of the Primarch to the Void Blades Captain he has been striving to prove that he is not a failiure, despite him being the only one who views himself as such. The result of this is that he will always be at the forefront of the attack, leading vicious charges onto critical locations to tear it from the enemy's head hands

The body of this Captain came from an old, damaged Terminator model. I replaced the missing power fist arm with a power weapon, and added a chainblade to the front of the assault cannon

This Librarian is currently just a normal Librarian, though I may make him the Chief Librarian of the Death's Heralds. We'll see

I initially intended to make this one Artume Hecate, but the Storm Shield-armed model grew on me more

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I am currently working on a Special Apocalypse Mission for the Chapter (and successor Chapters) based off the Nurgle assault on the Redoubt, the Abyssal Warriors' Fortress Monestary. It would be an Apocalypse battle, but each side would get a huge amount of Fortifications and Stragegic Assests to play with. For example, for the Chaos forces I'm going to give them an asset that will allow them to convert Imperial units to the side of Chaos during the game. If anyone has any ideas in this regard, I will be glad to hear them

Ok, so my first idea for the battle for the Redoubt (The Abyssal Warriors Fortress Monestary) is the Rock of Plague, a massive floating Nurgle Battle Fortress. The stats and rules for this beast are as follows:

Rock of Plague: Nurgle has sent his followers one of his most destructive weapons of war, the Rock of Plague. Stolen from the forces of Tzeentch, Nurgle has corrupted it with his many diseases, creating a floating palace of decay. The Rock of Plague is a Super-Heavy Skimmer with the following profile:

BS: 4 Structure Points: 10 Armour: Front: 14 Side:14 Rear: 14

Transport Capacity: 150 Models

Wargear: Heavy Plague Mortar, 4 Pus Cannons, 2 Pestilence Catapults, 4 Heavy Bolters, 2 Autocannons

Heavy Plague Mortar:
Range: 24-120" Strength: 7 AP: 3 Type: Ordinance 1, Barrage, Massive Blast, Primary Weapon, No Cover Saves

Pus Cannon:
Range: Hellstorm* Strength: 7 AP: 3 Type: Heavy 1, Primary Weapon

*To fire the Pus Cannon, place the Hellstorm template so that the narrow end is within 18” of the weapon and the large end is no closer to the weapon than the narrow end. The Pus Cannon is then treated like any other Template weapon

Pestilence Repeaters:
Range: 72" Strength: 6 AP: 2 Type: Heavy 2, 5” Blast, Primary Weapon

Special Rules: Mobile Fortress, Ponderous, Targeting Systems, Command Vehicle, Landing Pad

Mobile Fortress: The Rock of Plague is made up of several sections. Models on the walkways of the Rock count being behind Defensive lines, but can only reach the walkways if they were inside the Rock in the previous turn, and the walkways can only hold a maximum of forty models (vehicles may not be on the walkways, and Terminators count as two models). However, units may start the game on the walkways and may be on the walkways if the Rock deep strikes. The Rock itself is divided into three sections, excluding the Walkways. The first two each contain two Pus Cannons, one Autocannon and one Pestilence Repeater, and each may contain up to thirty models each, with ten firing points each, and these sections may contain Walkers. The third section is the centre section. This section contains the Heavy Plague Mortar and four Heavy Bolters, and may transport up to fifty models. This section may contain vehicles (including Super Heavies) provided they are not Flyers (unless they have Hover mode) or Super-Heavy Walkers. Walkers count as ten models, other vehicles count as twenty models, and Super Heavies count as forty models. This section also has ten firing points. The three sections of the Rock may be targeted separately, and each has a set amount of Structure points, taken from the overall amount. The two outer sections have three Structure points each, whilst the centre section has four. The individual sections are treated as separate vehicles for the purposes of being fired at or assaulted.

Ponderous: The Rock of Plague may not use the Jink special rule.

Targeting Systems: The Rock of Plague has massively enhanced targeting systems, allowing it to fire at extreme ranges, despite the added difficulty of scoring a hit. Should an attack from the Rock scatter beyond the maximum range, the shot does not automatically miss. Instead, the shot scatters the full 2D6, ignoring the BS of the Rock. Furthermore, any weapon built into the Rock with multiple shots (i.e., Heavy 2) may make the individual shots against separate targets.

Command Vehicle: The Rock counts as a Supreme Headquarters asset when alive, and any allied units within 24” may rerolled failed Morale checks.

Landing Pad: The Rock contains a Skyshield Landing Pad that always counts as being unfurled.

What do you all think?

Vanguard Veteran Squad Atreyu, The Harpies. Renowned for their fearless and brutal assaults, the varied load-out of the squad and the unfaltering leadership of Sergeant Freya Atreyu allowing them to deal with any number of foes. Indeed, it was the determination of their Sergeant that led them to victory during the assault of the Redoubt, the squad reaching an impressive tally of ten wreaked enemy super-heavies and a veritable carpet of slain foes.

Sergeant Freya Atreyu, weilding an ancient mark of power sword, built as a Gauntlet-sword. The mass of the gauntlet makes up for the reduced range of motion of the blade, and Freya has trained long and hard with the weapon to counter any limitations of the weapon

Making the sergeant was good fun. To make the gauntlet-sword I look the Power Fist from the Captain kit and a power sword left over from another kit. I cut the blade down to size, filed off the symbols on the top of the fist and glued down the blade, before covering the joint with the scroll

Here are the two Veterans weilding Storm Sheilds, helpful against power weapons and incoming AP3 fire

These are the two Power Weapon/Plasma Pistol armed Veterans, in case I get caught out of range of an assault. I made the second one's spear out of two combat knives and a flag pole

Here's the Squad Second in Command, armed with a Power Axe. When the squad divides into combat squads, this one commands the second team

Here are the two twin Lightning Claw armed Veterans, useful for fighting large units or models with a lot of wounds

And here are the two Heavy Weapons specialists, a Power Fist and a Thunder Hammer

Thanks Noctem

Currently, the paint scheme is Kantor Blue, with a Drakenhof Nightshade wash, and probably Warpfiend Grey on the lower legs and lower arms. I am currently undecided on how I want to do helmets, but it will be different than for Codex Chapters (i.e. Sergeant helmets won't be red)
