On Saturday, my noble Ribenguo battled the mangy Vandalanders of RiTides. Below is a brief overview of the game with a few of the more epic moments listed. I have to apologize, because after this game I played 3 or 4 more games and coached 2 others so nothing, and I mean nothing is straight anymore as far as what happened. RiTides, please, please jump in to fill in what I am missing!

Disclaimer the 2nd: we've only played a couple of games, so we are going to mess up the rules. We have a rules Q&A that will hopefully be moved here, so all can partake in the glory of our interesting rules interpretations. (we make some silly mistakes, but its all good. We're learning!)

For my list, I took the Ribenguo warband, plus enough extras to get me up to 50 food, keeping it at 2 hero levels. That gives me:

Kunoichi
Earth ninpo level 2

1 Tanuki Samurai, Greatsword

4 otter Ashigaru - 2 bows, 1 rifle, 1 pike

2 Fox Shinobi - 2 sickle and chains
_______________________________

Here is my deployment. Only the Samurai and Ashigaru are visible. Ashigaru are set up with a firing lane. The Kunoichi and Shinobi are held for ambush.

From the Samurai's perspective, you can see RiTides's deployment. Left to right, I count 6 hamsters (2 are on the hill), a hedge knight, and 4 shrew hussars.

Turn 1: I go first, and the Ashigaru shoot, doing some damage to the Hamsters. RiTides moves up the hamsters... and Northern Berserker kicks in! A couple of Hamsters attack other hamsters, and then many split up so they lose their squadiness. Hamsters are so cute! The Samurai goes behind the trees, and the hussars / hedge knight move forward. I believe they shot the Samurai, but don't remember now.

Turn 2: We mess up Ambush. We roll for ambush before we roll for turns, and both the kunoichi and shinobi succeed to enter this turn. Then we roll for turn, and I don't remember if I got 1st or second. But here is the beginning of turn 2:

Kunoichi appears in the middle, and the Shinobi are behind the Hussars. I activate the Shinobi first, and charge... and the shinobi take damage because of the hussars stand and shoot. The Shinobi get into combat and try to entangle the hedge knight, but die that turn. RiTides activates something, then I activate the Kunoichi. She charges the Hussars:

And at this point, my memory is too fuzzy... Even more so than for the previous stuff, can you believe it?

Here are a couple of the epic moments.

The Hamsters made their way up the board till they were able to get in with the Ashigaru. Bye bye, Ashigaru:

The hedge knight took damage, somehow. He ends up charging the Samurai... this is so epic:

The samurai ends up dying, but with his last death attacks, kills the hedge knight! His death will be sung for eons...

So the Vandalands take the field, today. Next time, I will need to actually take banners and horns on my units, since that is the army rule. Probably would have helped, a lot. Also, I should see about shields on the Ashigaru, and also taking some siege weapons. It would be great to pepper the horde with more fire as they work their way toward me. Also, I should have used the Shinobi to charge something after it had activated, or else something that has no ranged weapon so they can't stand and shoot.

Overall, a very fun and exciting game!

Looks like you got all the highlights . Was a lot of fun!!

Now that I am clearer on squads I am hoping that I will have the majority of the rules right next time we play

Will add more if it comes to me, and maybe we can record our next match in this thread, too.

Very cool. Go hamsters go!

Man, I need to get some people around here to collect. My girlfriend keeps putting off ordering her Axony. This is a problem. MUST PLAY BRUSHFIRE HRRRRRGH.

I'll CC this to the Q&A Section but just wanted to mention it here since you said you messed up Ambushing:

1) Roll for initiative
2) If the winner has anything to ambush/flank, they roll for their first model/squad
2a) If that model/squad succeeds, you then either Shoot OR Charge & Melee with it (Flankers get their full activation), ending it's activation.
3) Continue through each set of ambushers/flankers.
4) After all ambushing/flanking, make an actual activation from the rest of your army.
5) Hand play over to your opponent, who does the same stuff.

Hopefully that list will clear it up for you.

Also sounds like you had fun. How did the other games you played that day go?

Yes that step-by-step helps a lot.

This is long, but it is a recap of 6 games... . Apologies for wall o' text.

The other games were quick and fun, and very well received.

We did get one guy who played 3 games. Initially, he played Vandalands, but he didn't care for the way they played. He watched a game that included Aquitar, and then wanted a rematch. I kinda knew what was coming. I played Vandalands against him and I was utterly destroyed. Then he played a third game, using Aquitar, and was obliterated by the Civitas warband. He bought Civitas.

That game the new Civitas player watched was me using Ribenguo, against another new player using Aquitar. It came down to a weasel fusilier against a rifle ashigaru, a couple of inches apart, having a shootout... So whoever got the first turn, really. I did, so I won by a hair.

A couple came in later, so me and my other half worked as coaches while they played 2 games. First match was Axony vs. Civitas, next Ribenguo vs. Zabar. Both really seemed to enjoy the game, and were greatly amused by some of the situations. The Heavy Brigadier eating the two mouse conscripts was hilarious, as was the Zabar player wanting his stuff to die to bulk up the Lioness via maternal instinct. They especially liked the lower model count, faster moving feel... And that there was an actual obviously female mini on the board.

So, next time, I need to make sure i have one of every warband fully painted with the cards (didn't gave any for Zabar). Also, my hardcopy rule book is June 2011, but IIRC the most recent book is 2012. That might have messed me up at times.

Some of the thing that were a bit challenging, especially for people who have played GW, are things like armor vs. VY damage, always rolling WS to avoid damage, but especially list building vs. Hero building. Not bad things, just things that required more thinking about how to explain and understand. All have played D&D, so I was able to make some parallels there. There was also a bit of a perception that Vandalands was weak and Zabar very strong at the warband level, and Ribenguo a bit more of a finesse army. Which is all to the good. Folks were able to see very different play styles!

Next time, we're probably going to do a BBQ and Brushfire day at our place. If we got all crazy, we could set up 6 tables... Just need to find enough actual play surfaces...

I leave for a two week vacation in CA on Saturday. When I come back, something like this is going to happen. Haven't had time to paint for the last like week getting ready to go, so the frustration is mounting. MUST PLAY BRUSHFIRE HRRRRRRRGH

Getting multiple warbands together and plainted is a good idea. I'm getting more and more interested in Zabar, might be my next one.

OK, Zygrot, I gotta ask... you live in Florida, right, at least that is your location, But you're vacationing in CA?

First, I must clear up, you mean California and not Canada, right?

Also, I'm from California, so I'm kinda wondering, what is the draw if you are from Florida? It makes sense if you're going Nor. Cal, maybe Sierras, etc, but So. Cal? Ok, San Diego is rad no matter what because of the Zoo, Downtown is a blast, and if you go up to Temecula the Wild Animal Park is my favorite. You can see my namesake California Condors there!

OK, and if you go to LA/Orange County (home of Disneyland), there is SO much else to do if you stay away from the tourist traps. But come to think of it, Disneyland is very different from Disneyworld, anyway...

OK, nevermind, I can see the draw to CA no matter where you're from.

I'm originally from California. Moved to FL when I was 14. Going bac to visit family and vacation with the lady in San Fran. Her first time so we have long list of thins to do. Nat'l parks, San Diego Zoo, etc. I'm originally from East SD county, El Cajon/Santee. Grew up in the deserts so I'm taking the lady to see the cleanliness and peace of the dunes.

However it's all quite inconvenient because it's delaying my Aquitar painting.

Ah ha, a fellow Californian! I grew up in Orange County, and yeah, I do miss the desert, especially Joshua Tree, but even just driving with the windows down in the lovely, lovely heat or the cool nights. San Fran is fantastic, too. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time! Now I'm jealous, LOL.

And you're going to post pics of your Aquitar stuff when you get back, right?
