Eldar VS Space Wolves, 1000 points
Eldar
Space Wolves
Pregame:
Terrain and objective placement:
One objective was placed on the second floor of the mansion, one was placed behind the hedgerow to the right of it.
Another was placed beside the wrecked Rhino and the last in the normal forest (little plastic Xs).
Eldar deployment:
The Eldar won the roll to go first and chose to do so.
They picked the side with the Mansion and which also contained an objective.
The Warwalkers reserved hoping to avoid the
LF missile spam and get a good outflank roll for later on to pressure the
SW lines.
The Farseer, Avatar and Wraithlord all deployed on the Eldar left flank, the idea bing to advance down it together under the cover of Fortune and pressure the
SW obj in the forest.
Two of the Scout squads deployed near the Mansion and scouted into it early on. The other deployed close behind the hedgerow (due to Vanguard, neither could get onto the objs immediately).
(Note the scouts on the upper level are not actually there, its just for eas of placement/reminders).
Finally the
WS deployed centrally near the Mansion.
The plan was to hold the two home objs and try and isolate/neutralise the
SWs near the forest obj and capture that.
SW deployment:
The Terminators, Runepriest and two
GH squads deployed on the
SW left flank as far forward as possible to attack the Mansion obj.
One
GH squad deployed on the forest obj and another near the wrecked Rhino.
The last deployed more centrally as a backup unit.
The Long Fangs deployed in the forest obj to backup and hold it.
(Horrible mistake early on here, forgetting completely to deploy the 2nd
LF squad – ouch!).
The basic idea was to hold the 2 home objs and hammer the Mansion obj with the Termies and
Ghs.
Space Wolves failed to sieze.
Eldar turn 1:
Movement:
Fortune was cast on the Avatar and guide on the Wraithlord.
Seeing the strong
SW force pressuring the Mansion the
WL immediately moved to counter and support the Eldar there.
The Farseer and Avatar advanced however down the flank.
Everything elsse held in the gunline.
Shooting:
As many Scouts as possible, the
WL and the Waveserpent then fired into the closest unit of
Ghs, killing 3. However they passed their test but did kill the plasma gunner.
SW turn 1:
Movement:
Prescience was cast on the Terminators.
The Terms,
RP and 5 man
GH squad then moved up 6” towards the mansion.
The depleted
GH squad made a run for it, choosing to play a distracting role and keep going forward rather than fall back.
The
GH unit near the Rhino moved up slightly to get in 23” of the Scouts in the Mansion and pressure them. However this did leave the Rhino obj uncontested for now.
Shooting:
The Terms then unloaded into the Scouts at the hedgerow. Even with Stormbolters and Pres on them they only hit 3 times and caused no wounds.
The
Ghs then tried their luck but similarily dismal rolling again yielded no wounds.
A let off for the Eldar for sure!
Eldar turn 2:
Movement:
The Warwalker unit arrived luckily via reserves and outflank. The choice here was to either join the firebase or pressure the
Ghs objs with an outflank. The latter was chosen mainly to a belief that they could weather the storm and put some pressure on the
SWs. Being heavy they could also cap an obj.
The Avatar was fortuned. He and the Farseer then moved forward again into and towards the Skull ruins respectively.
The
WL moved slightly to support the Mansion scouts and get a bit of cover.
Shooting:
Two units of Scouts then shot at the depleted
GH squad to try and get First Blood.
They got two rends, however the
Ghs went to ground and passed both via cover.
The
WL then shot at them and killed one, however he passed his test.
The
WS could not see them so opted to shoot the Terminators instead. It managed to do 2 wounds but both were saved.
A torrent of fire from the
WWs then caused 8 wounds on the
GH squad at obj1, killing two after they chose to go to ground.
This was followed up by the Scouts in the Mansion firing on them too. However the picture speaks for itself with to hit rolls
SW turn 2:
Movement:
Prescience again went on the Terms who moved forward 6” accompanied by the 5 man
GH squad and
RP.
The central supporting
GH squad then moved back 6” to avoid a possible charge by the Avatar next turn.
Shooting:
There was only one primary target this turn, the
WWs. All three
GH units fired on them with plasma and rapid fire, wrecking all three in a firestorm (an error here, one
GW squad was pinned).
This opened up the opportunity for the Long Fangs to fire on the Avatar. However with fortune in play they did no wounds.
The Terminators and
Ghs then fired on the Scout unit at the hedgerow. The chose to go to ground but lost 3 men in the process and failed ther morale check, fleeing only 3”.
Eldar turn 3:
Movement:
The broken Scout unit failed to rally and fled another 3”.
The FS failed to cast Fortune on the Avatar this turn. The Avatar himself moved and ran ready to assault next turn if he survived.
The Eldar then decided it was time to strike with the
SWs so close to their objs. The
WS moved 6” and dismbarked the Firedragons. The
WL also moved 6” ready for an assault.
Shooting:
Scouts shot at the last remaining
GH in the depleted squad and despite going to ground he was killed.
The
WS,
WL and Firedragons all then fired on the Terminators and with little cover killed 3. The failed their morale check and fled.
HTH:
The
WL then decided to charge the Terminaotrs to finish them off and remove another possible threat. They regrouped and failed to wound him with
OW. In combat he caused a wound which was not saved. Retaliating the Terms could not wound the
WL. The remaining Terminator passed his morale check however and held.
Space Wolf turn 3:
Movement:
The
RP cast Iron arm on himself and Prescience on the 5 man
GH squad.
They both then moved forwad ready for a charge into the Firedragons.
The
GH squad at the Skull ruins moved back a further 6” out of range of the oncoming Avatar.
Shooting:
The
Ghs at the Rhino obj fired at the scouts in the Mansion but failed to wound.
Botht he Long Fangs and
Ghs then fored everything they had into the Avatar. They managed to reduce him to 1 wound but not kill him off. In return one
GH unit suffered Gets hot and died.
HTH:
The
WL killed off the last Terminator and conslidated backwards 4”.
The
Ghs then charged the Firedragons accompanied by the
RP.
OW killed one but they reached them with their charge roll (the grav generator was slightly out of range).
In
hth the Firedragons managed to kill one
GH but in return suffered 3 casualties. They passed thieir test however.
Eldar turn 4:
Movement:
The Scout squad finally rallied and moved towards obj2.
The Farseer cast Fortune on the
WL (not sure he was in range actually).
The Avatar made a good
DT test and got into the forest at
SW obj2.
Finally the
WS moved to the Eldar right flank to try and kill off the 3 man
GH squad near the Rhino obj.
Shooting:
All of the Scouts that could see and the
WS then fired on the
Ghs at obj1. They went to ground however and suffered no casualties.
HTH:
The
WL charged the
Ghs in combat with the Firedragons. In the melee both sides caused one wound with poor rolling overall. A tie.
The Avatar then charged the Long Fangs. He suffered no wounds from overwatch and killed 3 in combat, winning easily. The
Lfs failed their morale checka and were swept. The Avatar consolidated slightly.
SW turn 4:
Movement:
Again the
RP cast Iron arm and Pres.
The 5 man
GH squad that had been retreating from the Avatar moved to take the Rhino obj since the 3 man unit was pinned.
Shooting:
The
Ghs holding obj 2 now faced a choice. To rapid fire with everything they had supported by the
Ghs at obj1 or use their Boltpistols on the Avatar and charge. Only a single failed wound was needed to fell him.
They chose the former. No wounds were caused by their 15 Bolter shots but the Plasma guns fared better, scoring two wounds, one of which he failed.
HTH:
In combat the
RP (again) failed to to score any kills. The
WL however caused two on the
Ghs who retaliated with a wound of their own on the
FDs.
The
SW lost the combat but passed their morale check.
Eldar turn 5:
Movement:
The 3 man Scout unti moved to take obj2 at the hedgerow.
The
WS moved forward to get in firing range of the 5 man
GH squad that held
SW obj1 and try and break them.
The Farseer shuffled slightly but really had nowhere to go without exposing himself.
Shooting:
Both the
WS and Scouts then fired on the 5 man
Ghs at obj1 but unluckily failed to do any wounds.
HTH:
Despite Ironarm at str10 the
RP rolled a shocking double one to wound the
WL who killed the final
GH. The
RP failed his morale check and fled. However he survived being swept 8” to 6”.
SW turn 5:
Movement:
Ironarm again was in play (T10 this time!).
The
RP rallied and moved 3” into the Eldar DZ again counting on Ironarm to keep him alive.
The remaining
Gh squads consolidated around their objs claiming both.
Shooting:
Two plasma shots saw the
WS lose a hull point but remain operational.
A roll was made for another turn but the game ended there.
Final
Vps:
Post game analysis:
A very enjoyable game. At various stages both sides felt a real “oh dear, this is not going well” moment, specifically for the Eldar at the end of turn two having lost the
WWs and seeing 11 Space Wolves knocking on their mansion door and for the Space Wolves when the Avatar got into the
Lfs and the Terminators fell.
From an Eldar point of view the
WS should have boosted turn 5 to get Linebreaker rather than try and shoot 5 dug in 2+ save
SWs. That really cost a draw to be honest.
The Eldar Scouts again didnt do a great deal but proved they are resilient and hard to shift from an obj with shooting alone. The
WL was probably the star of the show, even with Frost weapons, Ironar and grenades that T8 and 3+ made a big difference. With the Long Fangs having no
LoS to him and no real other heavy shooting the
SWs found it hard to deal with him.
Tactically the Avatar needed more support, he did as well as he could but a single
MC on a flank isnt going to win games, however the
SWs deployed well, forcing the Eldar to support the Mansion obj since such a strong
SW force was arrayed there.
For the
Sws forgetting the other
Lf unit was very poor and could have made a really big difference (doh!). The Terminators somewhat underperformed although they did distract the Eldar a lot.
Had not played
MSU SWs before and it was interesting. The squads are small but mobile, pack some firepower with plasma and can hold multiple objs. However they are somewhat fragile when not in cover or gone to gorund.
Overall the defensive plan worked very well but attack floundered somewhat. 16 footsloggers even with 2/3+ is eventually going to take casualties, a Rhino or two, even for one turn would have helped a bit.
Thanks for reading!
