So i have played 40k and want to get into fantasy. I was thinking beastmen but i had some questions
1) Are they competitive, I'm not saying top tear tournament but i don't want a weak army that is going to lose allot. ie nids in 40k 5thed (that is my opinion dont hate me)
2) what should I get, now i have.... nothing to be honest I don't even have the book yet but i would like an idea of what to get and what i should outfit them with
3)any advice, anything from how to play them, tactica, a different army i should look at anything at all.
thanks

i personally don't play beasts but have been wanting to
it seems go with big monstrous units of Minotaur or solid block of bestigors or if you want to go crazy... all core chariots
the ambush rule they have can be extreme mayhem
they seem to be more fun then competitive but can also be competitive depending on play style and build(goes for any fantasy army i guess)

Beast excel at outdeploying your opponent. The 40 gor, 30 bestigor, and a tonne of chaff. Dont bother ambushing. (Not plugging myself)Check my beasts list on here if you want to see a competitive-ish list.

Yeah the great thing about Beastmen is they were the last book in 7th but were built with 8th in mind, see primal fury and hold your ground. But they don't have the mandatory 10pt standard, musician, champion of the 8th army books. Beastmen excel with great combat troops that are made better with magic support. We also have the best redirectors/chaff in the game IMO, ungor raiders at 30 pts for 5 skirmishers that can shoot and have primal fury, a musician adds only 3pts not 10 like they do to empire archers. 4 units runs you 120 and they count toward core. Next up we have 5 harpies, 55 points can make them scouting fr a few points more, flying, 2 attacks each they are solid. Next up Razorgor, run solo they are T5 with 3W and S6 on the charge, perfect for taking out wizards in bunkers, and since they are solo pivot away, awesome awesome unit.
Overall Beastmen are very overlooked and considered weak by many, but this game is won in the movement phase and that chaff and redirectors can hold up units, set up flank charges and so on and we do it cheaper and better then anybody, and with all those trash units we can take a dump on the opponents deployment.

It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

All over anywhere from 500 to 3000, more commonly though is 1500 to 2500. Beastmen start getting good when they can take a Level4, a Beast Banner Wargor, 40+Gor horded with AHW, 30-40 Bestigor and I'd say 4-6 units of chaff a good mix of raiders, harpies and single razorgors. If you are interested in getting started I would grab 2 battalions go with 20 raiders, 40 gor and 20 bestigor, I would then buy a 3rd battalion (if you want to plan down the road) or just a box of bestigor to get them to 30, a GBS and something to make a BSB. Get a feel for it then you can go in a few directions... Minobus a large mino unit with lord and hero level minotaur leading it. A herdstone list which is probably considered to be out most competitive list basically you park 3-4 shaman around a herdstone that generate power dice for your level 4 to go crazy with. Or you can go with a more balanced approach like Oncebitten360 does and I highly recommend you check out his youtube channel, he is the George Lucas of video battle reports IMO.

Redirectors, deployment drops, or units that you sacrifice to gain charges/keep your opponent away from your units. Typically, this takes the form of 3-4 units of 5 ungor raiders, 1-3 units of 5 harpies, 2-3 tuskgor chariots, and 2 lone razorgor.

Beasty chaff can be converted easily and on the cheap, for harpies get Tyranid Gargoyal wings and add them to ungors, daemonettes or ghouls, keep in mind they are 20mm so maybe avoid daemonettes but some people like them. So a box of ghouls or ungor and some wings off ebay will get you 10 for about $40, which is cheaper then buying them in the current 5 pack. As for razorgor I like some orc boars and chaos spawn bits, I think you can score baord bodies on ebay 5 for $10-$15 and can usally get some spawn bitz leftover on ebay cheap too, can probably get enough bits and the larger bases for 3 for the cost of the 1 razorgor model, then I would use the other 2 boars to convert a chariot.

I'm doing my harpies out of kroot with gargoyle wings. I think they look better than the others for beastmen.
