As my Fast attack choice in my army, I was planning on having 4 Thunderwolves (1 normal, 2 with SS and 1 TH+SS). However I'm now wondering if it would be better to have a Wolf Lord with a 2+, 4+inv save on a thunderwolf with 15 fenrisian wolves (1 cyberwolf upgrade). Both options costs more or less the same points.

Thunderwolves will be harder to kill as they have a 3++ save, however there is only 8 wounds on the 4 models. They also only have Ld 8.

Wolf Lord has Ld 10, is tough to kill and is pretty handy in combat. Fenrisians are easier to kill, but there are lots more of them... 15 wounds worth plus the lord.

Out of the 2 options, which would you take? Both fill similar roles, so the synergy with the rest of the list is a moot point.

I've found a ton of success lately with the "inexpensive unit led by tough IC" strategy of getting to melée, but the real danger with the thunderwolves is getting flanked. Those wolves fold pretty dang fast when deep strikers come in, or transports go around and waste em.

Thunderwolves aren't my favorite for numerous reasons, but picking between rhe two I've gotta say the thunderwolves are probably the smarter option. Normal wolves and a lord would be tactically fiddly to pull off.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Hmm, not sure I understand 100%, you say the danger with thunderwolves is getting flanked? Do you mean the danger with the fenrisian wolves is have the lord sniped out?

Actually I just realised for the same points again I could go for 2 units of 3 standard thunderwolves with no upgrades.... that might work even better! Although I dont like the fact of having to take a panic test on Ld8 after losing 1 model :/

remember that when putting your wolf lord with fenrisian wolves your majority toughness is decreased to 4 which makes it easier to inflict wounds on your lord

also, with different armour save 2+ vs 6+ you have to decide to LOS before you take armour save, so your lord will not function as the super-deflector shield you might first think.

I would take the thunderwolves and thats because they have T5 and 3+ armour with also 2 SS to put in front. They have a lot more punch. Also, ive been experimenting a bit with the 15 wolves composition and found that its very complex to get them all in charge range, they often build long strings with a large distance between the front and rear wolf. If you could manage to have them all together as a blob thats good but I find thunderwolves easier to handle in respect of maneuverability.

So I would have picked that thunderwolf line up. But if you got the points to go I would take 10 fenrisian wolves along also (I always do, I just dont run them as my only fast attack).

Another way of fielding them is to put them with a minimalistic WGBL with saga of hunter and outflank 15+HQ then drop the HQ (hopefully to be picked up by troops) and storm flank the enemy with the wolves. That way they get up close and tight from the beginning and its less risk of them dying to enemy deep strike.

Normaly i go for 5 Thunderwolves with 2SS and TH+SS and two plain. With a thunder lord with WC+SS Runic armour 2 fenrisian wolves, and some saga.

They are the fast attack Heavy deathstar that should take on terminators.

And then on the side i also run 10 fenrisian wolves as a support unit for my grey hunters

These fenrisian wolves can be fire magnets to ease of your troops a little aswell as a movable 5+ cover (it is even possible to obscure line of sight to your troops if someone stands on the same level of ground which is amazing. They can also be helgd back and sent in quick as a support if your grey hunters are about to Lose a melee.

beware though of sending your wolves first, they cant handle overwatch and they most often take to much space around your enemy. If you cant get in to base to base contact you cant Assault at all, so you could find yourself in a situation of a second round of close combat and not being able to support them which effectively kills them

I run both in my army but the lord goes with a unit of Thunderwolves if points allow. Thunderwolf build is 1 with SS and TH two with SS. more points they they are worth? probably but they are just so cool to not make them last as long as they possibly can. Also they have done a Great job for me so far. Run a lord with a pack of fenrisian wolves and you might not get the charge against overwatch. If the opponent happens to be closer to the Fenrisian wolves then your lord when you charge expect to need a couple more inches of charge distance.
