I'm new to painting and would really appreciate some advise on which colors to use for the cultists in my new Dark Vengeance set.

I have the ipad DV painting iBook but it's severely lacking wrt the cultists.

I really like the vallejo paints and would like to stick with them. I'm fine with either Game or Model colors. I assume for these drab guys, model might actually work better.

The 2 vallejo color charts are here:
http://www.vallejo.nl/gb/assets/s2dmain.html?http://www.vallejo.nl/gb/vallejo/modelcolorchart/index.html

And here is a reasonably high def pic of some of the cultists (click on the pic to get zoomed pic):

Any help would be great. I really need help with everything. Even the weapons here are completely different than the standard leadbelcher/nuln/ironbreaker that GW prescribes.

I assume most of the cloth armor colors are a base color, then a wash, and finally a highlight color. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Again, I'm new

Thanks!

They are supposed to look like a random mix of people from all walks of life. I would paint them w/e color you want. Do something different for each one. Then just have one thing to unite them together as a unit, such as white chaos symbols painted on or bloody hand prints.

I suppose it depends on what loo you want.

is it a rabble of recenetly turned people, or a more organised posse?

the latter would likely have a more uniform look, although individual items woudl vary.

My plan is to give them the same underlying colour - as if they have been issued with overalls or somesuch, but anythgin over that will differ between models as they scavenge from the dead, loot local stores as they storm past etc.

It could also depend on your main army - a Slaanesh cult may go in for brighter, more garish colours. A Word Bearers following cult might have hand written stuff scrawled on their clothes.

My Iron Warriors Cultists are goign to have a dark matte grey undertone and then spot colours of yellow here and there to tie them in with the rest of the army.

i'd go with brown or khaki colors to represent the former guardsmen uniforms and some rags in random colors... but i would make those colors very distinctive

Thank you for all the advise. The problem (one of them anyway) is that I'm brand new to the game and don't have a clue about back story, history of my army etc. My plan has been to paint the entire Vengeance set and then start reading rules, codexs, etc.

What I'd really like to do is try and use the same color scheme that GW uses in their picture:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=&prodId=prod1770004a&_requestid=964845

I was hoping someone with an eye for colors could provide a reasonable guess at the actual colors I'd need. I like VGC, VMC and GW washes.

There are obviously a lot of shades of gray, some browns/khakis, red, blues, skin tones and whatever color the guns are.

Any thoughts/guesses on what colors I should buy for base coat, wash, layering, highlights on each of these?

Skin tones -
Dark grey coats/armor -
Light great cloak -
Khaki cloth cloaks and wraps -
Sort of medium bluish/grayish cloth -
Brownish portions of guns -
Red stars, red capes, red masks (could all be same) -

I have a group of cultists that I am painting up with black and a trim that's the same color as my actual chaos marines (who are word bearers) I use various bone hues for the fabric when their wrists are wrapped etc
