Hi
I (with some freinds) have built a lot of scenery to our own 2nd ed 40k hybrid games, the setting is on some desert type planet, somewhere in the vast dark (evil, only war) future 40k universe..
i got tons of pictures from finish to start, but its a ongoing project so i will be posting as its moves forward... starting with some settlements. this is how i mainly been building these houses, qutie simple. with foamboard or cardboard, then carpenter spackle/putty and varius plastic caps and tubing.

Awesome!!!!
inexpensive terrain that looks good!
Post more, more more!!!
Also, would love to hear more about the Spackle you use, and how deal with;
* It soaking tons of paint (depending on how porous)
* does it chip? do you seal it?
* Do you spread it with a small trowel? or by fingers/hand?
* how thick is the base?
thanks for sharing!

"Spackle" covers a range of plaster-type fillers.
They range from thin "skimcoat" (to cover taped joints) type stuff to your thicker filler (holes and stuff). The thin stuff can often be rolled on with a paint roller.

Yes all roofs are removable, they are supported by bits of balsa or beechwood. I use a peice of card, knife or my fingers to spread out the spackle, sometimes i also use plaster. Then i use sandpaper on the surface to make it smoother. The base and roofs are 3-4mm masonite. More pics will show up soon! Automatically Appended Next Post: heres some more pictures of half-finished civilian type houses, maybe i will do another thread to show finished stuf in, or maybe i show it all here...
[/img]
Automatically Appended Next Post: some may notice that i ditched the cardboard(but still usefull in lack of foundings!) for foamboard here, i generaly use 2 difirent types, one thats 5 mm, and one thats 10mm.

[/img] Automatically Appended Next Post: So after building some of these type of settlements, i wanted to go big. So why not build a chrashed spaceship...
The sketches looked like this
[/img]
[/img]
the ship comed up as a idea when i found a Tractor toy in the yard, i "obtained" it.
The thing i was after, was not to do something too much of sci-fi, i wanted it to have the feeling of a freigth train or a cargoship, so the tractor peice was right up my alley.
[/img]
The base is cardboard.
[/img]
then i proceeded with more carboard, in different layers and plastic details.
[/img]
The cargoport in the front was made with balsa and masonite, i wanted a heavy look.
[/img]
The thrusters in the back was made from plastic pipes and the wheels from the tractor!
[/img]
this peice was becoming my baby, i painted it, and nonetheless i cut it in two
[/img]
I started with the interior, where the ship was broken
[/img]
I "lifted" in the peice when it was painted
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]
Automatically Appended Next Post: After tihs i fastened the peices on a base of masonite and further painted it with both airbrush and brush.
The port
[/img]
I really wanted the gritty look, so i did alot of weathering...

This is all great. The size of the gaming pieces is really impressive. the realism to all of it would work really well for modern wargaming. The crashed spaceship reminds me of some old second edition terrain in white dwarf. I image its a inter-system transporter. Why did you change the paint scheme on the ship? How long do you usually spend on each peice?
Also did I mention this looks really cool!

Great scenery, simple but effective and the crashed transporter is spot on, love the use of the old tractor toy, have an image of some poor child rummaging through the yard in search for his toy O well there loss
Cant wait to see what comes up next have you considered some tall tower like building for the desert scene, great for snipers.

hi and thanks for the kind words!
zwan1one: the ship was really time consuming, i got tired in the end.
The first colour i wanted was a ligther industry like grey, then i wanted it darker, but in the end i didnt have the time (becamed a father right then ) so i just weathered it down to a rusty peice of wreckage.
I dont know the hours spent, but its quite much!
Before this sets of 40k buildings i did alot of houses for Mordheim, the time spent on these varied from 6-7 hours, to maybe 25h on some.
@lone dirty dog, there are a few higher peices ideal for sniping, i will post them soon, i made them this summer to the very same themed table!
and ye, steal away, i stoled it and got inspired from a bunch of stuf and thanks again, it makes me really devoted to continue with all the cheering! and excuse my (sometimes) bad spelling bcuse im not english speaking

Nice lookouts like the use of rock to give the elevation, making them radio towers was a clever idea indeed gives reason for the hight.
I think a round tower (toilet roll shape but higher and wider) would still be a cool addition to your scenery, but thats just my opinion.
