just mucking around and dreaming up ideas for a space marine army. gonna try out an all pod list, see how it goes, and this is the list in its beta version. packed full of melta bolters and missiles.
anyway, its process is simple... drop in... unload fire and profit?
HQ:
space marine librarian w/ combi plasma = 115
space marine librarian w/ combi plasma = 115
Troops: = 850
10 man tatical squad w/missile, plasma, drop pod = 215
10 man tatical squad w/missile, plasma, drop pod = 215
10 man tatical squad w/missile, melta, drop pod = 210
10 man tatical squad w/missile, melta, drop pod = 210
Elites: = 370
5 sterngaurd w/2 meltas 2w/ combi meltas, drop pod = 180
5 sterngaurd w/2 meltas 3w/ combi meltas, drop pod = 185
Heavy Support:= 555
5 devestators w/ 4 missiles, drop pod = 185
5 devestators w/ 4 missiles, drop pod = 185

= 2000
suggestions on improving it are welcome. (although i am trying to keep it "pre or mid heresey style" and im using imperial fists as the chapter./ legion

Why would you drop-pod those devastators - long ranged and heavy weapons. So they don't want to move and don't need to be close.

Always like a good bit of drop pod rain; you have an odd number which is a good start.
Why not fiddle around with some dreadnoughts / thunderfire cannons for a support element (as would be present in a planet assault force).
Also I think a decent combat unit or two (unit with a couple for power weapons in) is always useful. It'll be a pain if you paint it all up, drop in, do a lot of damage (to marine equivalent troops) and then face charges from the remnants but they have power weapons and you do not. If you drop in next to a large units of banshees/warp talons make sure you wipe them out with shooting!

With removing one HQ and bumping up the DEVs to 10 man bolter squads now you have something different. Well, DEVs in pods are different but you get what I mean.
81 PA Marines in 9 pods. DEVs and SG come in turn 1 for alpha strike and tar pit, than the TACs trickle in to sit objective or shore up holes and flanks.

(I've got a bit smile on my face when I say this so don't take it the wrong way!)
I've read through your reasoning and there is some sense in there somewhere but...
Who brings devastators to a battle without giving them heavy weapons? Why not another two tactical units and have scoring units touch down.
Don't make me come over there and photo shop a line through the "strike hard" bit of your icon - a combination of the price of the flight and the missus would kill me.

LOL! nice...
I was catering to his list and the idea of max boots on the ground. While trying to unjustify giving HW to drop dopping DEVs. Not my list... commenting on his(kinda like it too!). For the intentions of what his list is going for I think it makes more sense.

so, and im loving the discussion here btw,
the devs i think have 2 options, well maybe three.
- leave em as is, and deploy them turn 1 in my backfield. drop in the empty pods as speedbumps (thus allowing more full pods on turn 1. )
- take away the heavy weapons... and pod in. but then why not just save pts and go with tac squads? they can then have at least 1 spec wep and a hev wep. and the hev wep is free...
- take the devs out altogether, and bring in some ironclad dreads.
so something like:
Master of the forge, combi plasma, thunder hammer = 140
tac squad, missile, melta, pod = 210
tac squad " " = 210
tac squad, missile plasma = 215
tac squad " " = 215
dread w/plasma cannon, pod = 150
dread " " = 150
dread " " = 150
ironclad dread w/ pod = 270
ironclad dread " " = 270
= 1980
took out the SG and devs, added dreads. i still have 9 pods, but 5 of them are dreads. also still running 40 boots on the ground. seems small ish to me and away from what i want. plus with the amount of haywire and other "auto glance stuff" combined with hullpoints... maybe dreads are not the answer?
maybe this works better:
librarian, combi plasma = 100
tac squad, missile, plasma, pod = 215
tac squad, missile, plasma, pod = 215
tac squad, missile, melta, pod = 205
tac squad, missile, melta, pod = 205
tac squad, missile, melta, pod = 205
tac squad, missile, melta, pod = 205
6 sterngaurd, combi meltas pod = 215
6 sterngaurd, combi meltas pod = 215
6 sterngaurd, combi meltas pod = 215
= 1995
this one still has 9 pods, but EVERYTHING is kitted for close range fire power. has 79 infantry models on field, including 18 vengance rounds, or melta shots at 3 targets from SG, and another 6 from tac squads, (wich will combat squad upon drop) the sheer ton of bolter fire should take care of most infantry, the SG deals with slightly tougher stuff, and i have a libby in there for some psychic defence and offence.

Rather than max devastators, I would like a counter-attack element or mobile firepower...
Lose one librarian and replace with:
1. Captain and plasma gun armed command squad. FnP and a bunch of AP2 firepower. Arm the captain with a plasma pistol or combi-plasma.
2. Chapter master and honor guard. Great counter attack element.
3. Termie librarian and terminator force. Null zone and deep strike spell. Combined with some teleport homers on the drop pods...
4. Pedro and max out the sternguard. +1 attack for his banner effect and add some power fists or axes to the sterngard.
Rather than the devs, I would like the combination of a termie librarian with terminators and the captain with the command squad. It still provides you with good firepower and a great mobile counter attack element.
So something like:
Captain w power weapon and plasma pistol 130
Termie Librarian: SS Null Zone, Gate 190
4x Troops 850
2 x Sternguard 365
1 x Cmd Squad w 4 Plasma Gun Drop Pod 210
6 x Terminators 3x Chainfist, Heavy Flamer 260
or
5 x Terminators CML and 2 Chainfists + 2 Teleport homers on drop pods.

i thought that termies could not take pods...
while i like the idea of terminaters in the list... they are just so expensive for really not adding much in the way of ranged firepower - wich this army is kinda going for. and with overwatch the way it is, i think having a pure shooting army that works optimal at 12-24" is a good thing. however, an allied unit of GK termies and a libby might be very worth it as well. i could even have them come in via stormraven...
still thinking how that could work...

Codex termy units cannot take drop pods. They can ride in them but the unites do not have the option to purchase them so that limits to TDA IC's hitching rides.
For more fun, take your original list - drop the second libby, and add in a landing pad fortification. First turn drop all three DEV squads on it with no scatter. Turn two, raise the walls and enjoy the game long 4+ invuln of your new battle bunker. Also, switch atleast one squad to 4X HB's.

heres a idea... working in some aircraft and a greyknight allie for some fast combat counter attack
librarian = 100
10 man tatical squad w/missile, plasma, drop pod = 215
10 man tatical squad w/missile, melta, drop pod = 210
10 man tatical squad w/missile, melta, drop pod = 210
10 man tatical squad w/missile, melta, drop pod = 210
storm talon w/ lazcannon = 150
storm talon w/ lazcannon = 150

Allies:
GK librarian w/, hammer = 155
5 termies, 4 halbreds, 1 hammer, psycannon, psybolt = 245
storm raven, lazcannon, multi melta = 205
= 2000
has 4 fliers. only 4 pods, but everything can deepstrike / get in on the other guy pretty fast. the termies ride the raven in, and will be able to charge upon disembark thanks to assault vehicle rules...
anyway not sure if competetive or not, but all the infantry is scoring, and there are 4 aircraft zipping around with decent firepower.
not sure if this list is a bit more competetive then the ones above... but, could be fun anyway
