So I am trying to gather everything for a friendly campaign my friend and I are going to start. We have used the idea of units getting upgade skills as they win battles and progress in the campaign before and we liked it. I have come up with a chart for 6th that when a unit survives a battle with half or more of its models it can roll on one of these charts as the player sees fit. If you roll and get something you already have you can reroll on the same chart. Each unit would only be able to have 1 upgrade at a time for the campaign. Once a unit gets a Veteran Skill it becomes unique and each player must keep track of it through out the campaign, if it dies in game it loses the upgrade.

Melee
1) Preffered Enemy
2) Furious Charge and Hatred
3) Fleet and Rage
4) Fearless and Fear
5) +1 WS and Assault Grenades
6) Your choice

Ranged
1) Preffered Enemy
2) Relentless
3) Tank Hunter and Monster Hunter
4) Split Fire
5) +1 BS and Night Vision
6) Your choice

Defensive
1) Feel no Pain or It will not die
2) ATSKNF and Stubborn
3) Shrouded
4) Counter Attack and Hit and Run
5) +1 Toughness or +1 Hull Points and Defensive Grenades
6) Your Choice

Strategic
1) Infiltrate
2) Scout
3) Outflank and Acute Senses
4) Deep Strike
5) Each model would have a Locater Beacon and the unit would have the Comm Relay abilty, not the actual model.
6) Your Choice

Vehicle
1) +1 Armour and Extra Armour
2) It will not die
3) 5+ invulnerable save
4) Tank Hunters and Monster Hunters
5) +1 BS and Night Vision
6) Your choice.

I think you should only be allowed to pick if you get one you've already rolled. I think there should be a defensive one that improves over watch fire annnnd don't forget relentless is largely an assault ability these daze.

I understand that relentless is better for assault now that you can snap fire, but I woudl hate to roll on that chart with a Assault squad and get something I can't use because I don't have any heavy weapons in that unit. The other thing is units that use ranged weapon that are blast would use this a lot since yu can't snap fire blast weapons.

We play for fun and I like the chance that you can pick what you want when you roll on the chart. I will have to keep an eye on that to make sure it doesn't get out of hand. The think that balances this out is that if the unit is destroyed you lose the ability and that unit. So what happened before when we tried this in 5th is the "veteran units" tend to be targted more and they don't usually survive long.

Check out the fourth edition rules (or suggestions as it was back then, not shoving gak down you're throat) and they have really good rules for experience, reinforcing units and all that jazz. Check it out, download the fourth edition pdf. It's in the campaign section. In fact just check out the 4th rules for campaigns. Hell while your at it check out the fourth kill teams . But on the note of your rules you should make it so that they get the ability randomly. This would represent them figuring stuff out on the field. But seriously check out the 4th rules, they really thought them through.
