We have painted and done projects on and off, of all sorts of descriptions but we have never written a blog before and after reading a few on here thought it might be a fun thing to do and hopefully help us learn and get some great ideas along the way and even give some back.

The idea is after both reading the forge world Horus heresy book and seeing there new range of space marine legion models we decided and were inspired to make a legion army/armies primarily starting with the four main protagonists in the book "Betrayal".
So now having a rough idea of what we wanted to do we sat down and hashed out the best way to go about doing this ,
First things first to divide four amongst two , as he was already starting on a world eaters army for armies on parade 2013 it only made sense that he have this legion. I decided I wanted the main protagonists in the whole affair the sons of Horus to be my first choice , leaving two more legions the death guard and the emperors children. We decided as the death guard had an offish white as there main colour it was better for me to have them and for him to have the purple hue of the emperors children so that we would both have a difference and enjoy ability in the paint palette between the two legions. So with this done and decided we were ready to start, . . .

We decided the best way to start this legion project and our first purchases will be two of the big legion sets from forge world , mk III pattern iron armour and mk IV pattern armour we will then devide these equally in two so we can both have a mix of the armour patterns in our initial squads See pictures to follow

And here's the second half of what will become the world eaters and emperors children.

Also has anyone seen the new forge world blisters ?, now these seem like a good idea and even though padded out in the box the model can still move in the blister it's self, causing damaged models on arrival , C

Washing the resin , can't help but notice that the mk3 iron armour is very greasy in comparison to the mk 4 armour witch is buy all accounts flash free , crisp and no oil or grease on the parts. M

So the next question for me is what to do with my 30 marines ? After reading through the legion army list in "betrayal" I have decided to do one 10 man tactical squad (death gaurd) one 10 man tactical squad (sons of Horus) one 5 man heavy support with heavy bolters(sons of Horus) and one 5 man seeker squad (sons of Horus) then what ever c decides and then it's back to forge world. Sounds like a fun project. I hated clearing the flash off my MKIII's. Hopefully you wont find it so horrid.

Thanks for all the interest and comments guys , and cappyBen I found the flash on the mk3 armour wasn't that bad their just greasy as hell. Anyway I've had a few days off work so have painted two test models death guard and sons of Horus , the death guard I'm quite happy with for 1st attempt though maybe to heavy on the sepia wash ? The sons of Horus model on the other hand I done and redone a few times and found none that I'm happy with , to get the sea green colour is proving to be a bit of a challenge if anyone has any ideas or susjesstions would love to hear M

This is how forge world painted their stuff;

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/downloads/product/pdf/h/Horus_Heresy_Painting_Guide.pdf

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."
– Eighth Captain, Khârn

Yep I'm afraid I've tried that , lol and looked and read almost all the blogs going on different websites these past few days and nothings close to what's in the book , even there own models aren't painted the same as in the book , so I think it's gonna come down to this ,go with a possibly lighter paint scheme like a lot of the other modellers and just bite my lip and go with it , or stick with the one I have witch to be fair is starting to grow on me a bit and a good blue, green that is different enough not to be confused with dark angels, that being said weathering always comes out better on lighter stuff , what's the compromise ? Anyway I have till the weekend to figure it out as that,s the dead line I set myself to have both test models done by. M

You could add a dark angels green + a very dark blue and it may achieve the color you are looking for.

I don't have the book to compare, but you may want to see if vallejo panzer aces or model color has a closer fit for the Sons of Horus. Maybe try one of these or something close: 70971 Green Grey or 70886 Green Grey or Panzer Aces Highlight USMC Tkcr.P. Then use a light wash of a greenblue-ish color (mix up your own with inks). Or make a wash from Vallejo color: Periscope. Or a wash of Pthalo Blue liquidtex ink mixed with a lot of matte medium and some distilled water and flo-aid.
