Black Templar Recruit Undergoing Surgeries

Dear Dakka Dakka forum users,

After 4 years of absence I restarted playing 40K half a year ago. I started by updating and finish painting my Black Templar army. After they were done it was time to reboot my CSM army. Now, when I started chaos many years ago, I used the lost & damned codex from the Eye of Terror campaign. It was based around a sorcerer, (scratch built) mutants and IG traitors (giving me some nice IG tanks) and Daemons. As I don't play competitive games, my friends allowed me to continue using the L&D with the 5th edition CSM.
Fast forward to a few months ago and the release of the 6th edition chaos. This Codex made me very happy. Not just because cultists mean I can use my mutants again without the L&D expansion, but also because of some new war machines and even a sort of mechanical dragon! Sadly, upon seeing the actual model at the FLGS, my enthusiasm was tempered. The Chaos Turkey is neither enough Dragon, neither enough fighter Jet to get me excited. It was only when I played a game against my friend's Tyranids that I got an idea. The tyrannofex looked a lot like the forge fiend and this got me thinking about making some hybrid Tyranid/Chaos Daemon Engines.
Hope you guys like the results. I would greatly appreciate any constructive critique or ideas for modelling further details and or painting.
Thank you for your interest!

some of the mutants to give you guys an idea of the rest of my army

Helldrakes

With this Helldrake my idea was to get a more compact jet-like flyer. It had to seem fast while still retaining the feeling of the daemonic possession

Description All pieces come from the Helldrake kit except for the head (forgefiend) and the neck; which is a cut-away of the Tyrannofex tail. I still need to find something to cover the hole in said piece

This Helldrake had to be the opposite of the other one. It is based around a Trygon body with the wings and flying tail and legs of the hive tyrant. the front claws and head are from the Helldrake kit

[Thumb - Harpy front.jpg]
I don't like the weapons in the mouth, so I just drilled a hole so I can add fire or something else later

[Thumb - Tyrannofex-Forgefiend side.jpg]
Forge Fiend made from Tyrannofex Body and original limbs/head. I had to cut away a large part between the tail and the body to get the hind legs to actually touch the ground. Damn those Tyrannofex hind legs are tall!

I still need a neck. Also, I would like to magnetise the weapons, but I don

Trygon/Maulerfiend. I'm still looking for ways to make the head more mechanical

[Thumb - Trygon-Maulerfiend neck.jpg]
I'm really happy how I clogged the huge hole in the Maulerfiends body

These are the arms that will be added later

That second Helldrake is really awesome. Why couldn't the official model look more like that?

Great work so far, mate. Keep it up.

These are really swell looking. I have converted lots of nids and csm, but never together. I really like the trygon based heldrake.

Thanks for all the positive replies! I was quite nervous about the reactions to my first Dakka topic.

I was really hoping someone could give me some advice how to paint these models. They will be the eye catchers of my army so I want to paint them accordingly. Any ideas how to give the mechanical and organic bits a uniform look?
I was thinking on using a single shade on different base colours. For instance use a sepia wash on a silver base for the armour plates and using that same shade on a white base for the bone plates. Does that make any sense?
