In the last battle, a rescue force of Salamanders and Sons of Gord retrieved Captain Gordus from his downed Storm Eagle deep in the Tyranid Infested Jungles. Meanwhile, back at the main landing field, Inquisitor Iniquitous was planning a hasty escape, his plans to keep the true nature of the facility on Remuera Majoris IV secret in tatters and a wrathful Space Marine Commander on the way back to base.
The Hive Mind however, has plans of its own....

Inquisitor Iniquitous slammed his fist against the side of the transmitter again, causing the adept manning it to jump and let out a small squeak of fright
"What do you mean there is no response? I have a ship in orbit awaiting my orders - hail them again!"
The adept nervously cleared his throat and stammered a response. "I'm sorry my lord, but we have had no contact from your ship for several hours. Not since it was ordered to withdraw out of system."
Iniquitous froze in place and let out a long, slow breath. "What did you say?"
"Yes lord - we heard a broken transmission from out of system ordering your ship to withdraw. Did you not know of this? It had the correct codes and authentications" The look on the Inquisitors face made the adept regret his question immediately.
Without another word, Iniquitous stormed out of the comms room and out into the corridor. He strode towards his temporary quarters in the command station, his mind reeling.
Betrayed! So, I am to be cut loose and left to left to rot on this stinking planet by the Conclave. If they think I am going to shoulder all the responsibility for this debacle they will be sorely disappointed - this mission was doomed as soon as the damned Astartes got involved! I need a ship and need it quickly - if they only knew how strong the Xenos truly were here.....
His reverie was broken by the distant wailing of a raid siren, muffled by the thick armourcrete walls of the command bunker. Switching his ear-bead to the Guard channel he heard contact reports coming in from across the perimeter.
The Xenos had arrived and from the sounds of it, in force. Damn them, why was the only reliable constant on this filthy rock the very creatures now clawing at the containment fence.
If only humans were so predictable....

Like all games in this campaign, night fight rules are permanently in effect to represent the thick sulphur clouds in the atmosphere.
The battle lines are drawn
Marines and light armour guard the right flank
Snipers look for targets amongst the swarm
The centre stands ready
More tanks anchor the left
The first Xenos appear from the jungle
"Wait until you see the red of their eyes men!"
The swarm approaches
Hive Guard and Warriors in the centre
Tervigon and Tyrant to the right
Stealers and Zoanthropes to the left
Heavy-hitters and fast units begin to move up on the left
Crouching dred, hidden hellhound
With a deafening roar, the swarm surges forward
The defenders respond will shot, shell and bolt
Great holes are blasted in the Xenos ranks, but still they come
The Hive Tyrant shrugs off multiple hits, but a Hive Guard falls
Marines on the right fire into a large Gargoyle swarm bearing down on them
"Plenty of targets for everyone men - don't get greedy!"
The swarm seems endless - a living tide of claw and tooth
Armour adds its guns to the firestorm
The defenders take casualties of their own to bio ammunition and spore mines
The perimeter is breached - Xenos in the wire!
Ranger units move amongst the tanks, searching for infiltrators
The gargoyle swarm assaults the right-hand bunker. The marines take casualties but fight on
In a bold move, a section of scout sentinels outflanks the Xenos advance, firing into the backs of winged warriors
The swarm moves closer...
Hold the line men! Keep firing!
The forward marine position in the centre sees death approach, but they know no fear
Without warning, a huge Tyranid monster erupts out of the ground amongst the defenders
Stand fast brothers!
Gentlemen, serving with you has been an honour...
Many units are severely mauled by Xenos fire and bio-artillery. Officers rally the troops.
A Salamander Razorback is destroyed by the Trygon
The forward Salamanders disappear under a tide of claws and fangs
Gargoyles assault the left flank as the Xenos tide breaks across the front defences like a wave.
The hellhound breaks cover, burning warriors and lesser Tyranid creatures alike. The Brood lord leads a counter-assault
Man vs. alien. Desperate fighting breaks out across the base
The Tyrant and Guard crash into the defenders
The centre marine position goes down fighting
The hellhound's sally is cut explosively short
Despite the loss of the flamethrower tank, the armour leads a spirited counter attack into the swarm
Lone acts of heroism keep the line intact
Many large Tyranid creatures have been killed or are out of position - taking advantage of this, a full armoured assault is ordered
The desperate tactic keeps much of the swarm away from the defence line and throws the Xenos into disarray. But fighting continues across the base, now severely compromised and infested with Tyranids. Neither side can claim victory as both forces settle in for a drawn out engagement
Result: Draw!

Iniquitous stepped over the body of a dismembered guardsman and blasted a lurking gaunt with his bolt pistol. The defences were holding the bulk of the swarm at bay, but the Xenos were all through the base. The Inquisitor kept moving his retinue forward as they made their way to the landing pads - if he could find a shuttle, at least he could get off the planet. Even waiting in orbit for rescue, uncertain as that may be, was better than staying to die down in the muck and filth of this world.
"My lord" called his warrior acolyte "I'm getting vox chatter from the landing pads. It seems another large attack is building at the edge of the field"
Iniquitous swore under his breath. The landing fields had little if any armour in defence, mostly being manned by infantry. A determined attack by the Xenos there could overrun the entire base.
"Keep moving and pick up the pace" he ordered "I don't want to be caught here if the Xenos hit us again - or when Captain Gordus and his merry men return" Iniquitous began to run. His was a Hobson's choice it seemed, between the relentless Tyranids and a very angry Astartes commander.....

Another fun game - we actually ran out of time at the end, but even if we had played another turn I'm not sure we would have got a clean result. This way the base remains intact, but hopelessly compromised by the 'nids with another major assault inbound. Fun times!
Next game; let's see what happens when a mass of Tyranids, including monstrous and gargantuan creatures hits an infantry-heavy defence position (I'm guessing much hilarity)
