I'm very new to hordes (In fact, I've yet to play a game! But I've read the rulebook and researched some units to get a small feel) and I'm looking to get started relatively inexpensively.

I realize the starter boxes are a great value, so I'll probably pick up one of those. However, I love Typhon's model and would like to try and work him into a list. Is he viable? Any good? How do I build a list to utilize him to his full potential? Which warlock should I use along side him? I'm looking to start somewhere in the range of 25 points.

Typhon is a great warbeast. Definitely one of the best for legion. He works best with either pThagrosh or eThagrosh. I personally love eThag's model a lot more than pThag. pThag's feat allows him to bring any warbeast back from the dead so if you have typhon or a carnivien they would essentially have to kill it twice if you bring pThag. eThag's feat allows all warbeasts in his control range to make one move and one additional attack after everyone has moved and gone so make sure to use eThag last if you are using his feat that turn

Typhon holds a special place in my blighted heart. He has three initials with gunfighter and three-headed so he can switch between his bites and sprays even in melee and his 360 front arc means he can get some interesting angles and never has a back arc

He's got a lot of versatility, his animus is solid (self only) and he can do well with just about any warlock, and with base mat 7 he's our most accurate hitting beast.

The bad: He lacks pathfinder, which can be a big deal depending on the board. He also does not have reach, which makes his threat range only 9.5" which is not great by any means. Its decieving since he can charge and spray extending that threat out, but sprays are not as powerful, and being out in the open leaves him vulnerable.

Which leads me to his defensive stats. For a 12 pt beast, he leaves plenty to be desired in this area. DEF 13, while decent, isn't enough to keep him alive. Tenacity helps bump it to 14 which is Warp Wolf status, and is decent, but again, isn't usually enough. ARM 17 is not very good. Even with one of the three animi up, he's not that sturdy, and with dedicated engagement, he'll fall leaving you feeling sad you brought him.

So what does all that mean?

Even though he's very good all around, and CAN work with any caster, I prefer to only take him with those casters who can REALLY make him shine. The Thagroshes are always considered first due to the affinity and they make him him more survivable. I think he's just ok with them, and prefer the Carnivean for Spiny Growth. The one caster I feel he has a didicated slot for and I never leave home without him is pVayl. She's an amazing caster, she does everything for him he wants and he provides her with the best possible Dark Sentinel target we have. Crit Pitch on boosted attacks triggered off Dark Sentinel can change the outcome of a game and puts pVayl on the top of the list. With incite and chiller, he's effective MAT 11, P/S 19! He's a slaughterhouse, not to mention his RAT always increases with incite turning his sprays into accurate flames of death. It is with her that I see his point value really being worth it. Leash also helps his lack of reach and can be used to reposition for charges or for sprays, and her feat keeps him nice a safe with Dark Sentinel as an additional defensive ability.

Try him out with every caster and see how he feels. He really is good with pretty much everyone, I just feel his spot is by pVayl's side.

Absylonia - Forced Evo and tenacity gets him to DEF 16, ARM 18, which is very decent, or playing God gives him reach and two open fists for power attack shenanigans.

Bethayne - Blood thorn isn't bad giving him cont. corrosion on sprays, Carnivore bumps him to MAT 9 or Ashen Veil puts him to DEF 15 vs. living models.

pLylyth - Feat makes his sprays out of control accurate, parasite puts him to P/S 20!

eLylyth - He's an ok backup beater and 4 sprays on feat turn is pretty good, expecially under Pin cushion. Stealth isn't too shabby either

Rhyas - He's a great target for Rapport putting him at MAT 8, RAT 6. Rat 6 sprays are a good time especially if you can aim. The lack of a damage buff hurts in this list though against higher ARM targets and he lacks the staying power to endure a full assault.

Saeryn - Feat turn keeps him safe from melee, Blight bringer can help him remove infintry and protect against non-reach infintry and respawn isn't too shabby.

pThags - Fog of War puts him to DEF 15 vs. shooting which is solid, 16 with tenacity. His aura puts him to ARM 19 in melee 20 with Tenacity which is solid. He can use his feat to bring him back and of course the regen boost from the affinity. Draconic blessing puts him to P/S 19 with terror which is solid. With all that said, I still prefer the Carnivean for Spiny growth.

eThags - Manifest destiny and dragon's blood are both amazing spells and make Typhon a solid piece, but again, the Canivean's animus puts him a step above (IMO)

Kallus - Ignite puts him to P/S 19 and Dark Guidance makes him practically never miss. He's solid here, but not altogether necessary. I tend to run a lot more infintry heavy and back it up with Ravagores.

eVayl - I feel he is a trap in this list simply because you want to use Refuge on him to move up, spray and then move back, but 12pts for a spray bot isn't worth it. I also prefer dual angels and Ravagores in her tier list.

I hope this helps, these are of course only my opinions so try him out with everyone and see how it goes!

where the wind comes sweeping down the plains

What he said...the Thags keep him worthy, but Carnivian is a better and slightly cheaper combo for them

Vayl is prolly boss
