Good day to you most respected members of the dakka clan!
Even though I've been to the hobby for several years and read these forums almost as many years, I've never dared to register myself. I'm more to the modeling side of the hobby and I'm quite sensitive in presenting my work to the public But now I have a serious problem and I'm completely stuck with the project right now.
I've been working on a nurgle CSM army for some time and I have started detachable palanquin for my sorcerer. The basis of the project is a razorback hatch and a whole box of nurglings on a 60mm base. The problem is the back of the palanquin. I want to make a backdrop for the sorcerer to look even more epic.
I'm thinking of maybe a nurgle fly icon about the size of the sorcerer out of plasticard. I'd like to also use the nurgle icon from the CSM kit because my daemon prince has the same icon as the head of his staff. I think a throne is out of question also because there is no room for it.
Any ideas?

I got on with it. Added the fly icon WITH the banner, some spikes to the front and a trophy rack to the back to break up the empty space. Obviously still needs to be tidied and then messed up again with weathering and some green stuff. I think I nailed the egoistic chaos show-off feel to it.
I also took a picture of some plague marines. I'm going to have two units of 7 in my army and they are mostly done out of the one pose marines from AOBR and the paint kit.
The other stuff I'm now working on are three nurgle bikers, a rhino with a dirge caster, daemon prince. The bikers are going to have a kind of centaur aesthetics on them as they are melded with their bikes. Wired to the dirge caster will be a cadian trooper strapped to the front of the rhino and his intestines being chewed by nurglings When the green stuff is done I'll try to get some decent pictures of them.

Hey! First off, Welcome to Dakka! I hope you like it here, lots of fellow converts, modelling enthusiasts, and painters
Second, don't ever feel afraid to show your work! Think in the mind of an artist (Which you are btw), and take criticism constructively. If someone bashes your work without any good reason, chalk it up to them being mindless trolls who probably don't have any skill in crafting. Take the good and leave the bad.
Third, on the subject of the palanquin... My opinion would be to take a pair of pliers and randomly crush the insides of the holes to make them look more like they we rusting or rotting out in a less uniform way. It will add to the dynamic of the backdrop and give some good base texture to it as well.
Fantastic work on the scythe! I love how you curved the reaper handle! how did you do that? Good greenstuffing, keep up the good work!

Thank you for the comments! Very much appreciated.
The scythe is actually just plasticard. It's one layer shaped like a scythe and then added some weight on the powerpack with another layers of thin plasticard each side. Shaping the cable from plasticard must have been the hardest part of it really. He also has the clawed hand from the CC cultist champion. I had to replace the whole forearm because the original elbowpad was positioned oddly when his palm is upwards.
I'd like to ask for opinions on the power weapons. I've been thinkin to add very small flames to each of them to represent them being powered by the warp rather than replaceable power packs. Has anyone done anything similar before?
Sorry for the picture quality, these are taken with my smartphone
Edit: Nice idea on the weathering Dark-Warrior-Art! I'll definately do that.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Not a plague marine this time... You really need something to counter the chaos. Just a filler update until I can get my green stuffing gear going again and finish the palanquin.
Heres a Grand Master for grey knights. This guy is old and obviously still needs to get the paintjob finished. The main thing I've done here is the bionic arm. I like to think he has lost his arm in a heroic battle banishing some greater daemon (of course ). And to respect that every grey knight in my army have their left arm colored gold. The idea was just to try and break the silver theme the grey knights are having.
I'm actually very concerned about what GW is doing these days. The thing is that this little bugger is more than a year old and I still haven't finished it. GW just has released so many new and shiny things and I can't control myself even so much that to get any project finished. With the thing going on with tau right now I'm starting to doubt I'll ever going to get this chaos army done. I feel ashamed

Back to plague marines... Sort of.
I've been thinking of ways to include noise marines in my army. Finding an excuse to have some sonic awesomeness in nurgle army isn't that easy. Then the other day it struck me! I read a short story called The Carrion Anthem by David Annandale a while back. It featured Typhus conquering a planet in very slaaneshi way with the whole planet singing the same song in one chorus until everyone died. I really recommend reading it. It was one of my favorite stories in the Treacheries Of Space Marines.
So behold... The Gospel Of Pestilence!
I haven't greenstuffed them yet. What we have here are two sonic blasters and a blastmaster. Are they recognizeable enough? There's also the champion with a nurglish doom siren and claws.
The thing is that would you have a WYSIWYG problem with nurgle noise marines in this context?

Finally an update. The palanquin is pretty much done but I haven't managed to get a decent picture out of it yet. My next project might be a lightbox and camera.
Anyway, what we got here are the noise champion, some regular noise marines and the finished dirge caster. Pics are still quite messy but the details will pop out more when they're painted.

Finally an update on the plague host. I got myself a "real" camera and had some of the models primed. The next project is some sort of a lightbox.
First off the palanquin and the sorcerer:
I actually lost my pliers and didn't have the patience to search and try them on the banner... Maybe next time. On the other hand there is now a big smooth surface to practice weathering with just painting.
I think this pic shows a clearer view of the conversion on this guy. The extended hand is completely new from the elbow on. The hand is from the CC cultist and fits the sorcerer perfectly. I was thinking of adding a swarm of flies coming out of the hand but it might be a bit to much.
These are the squad leaders for the plague marines. They both have some minor nurgley greenstuffing on them but the main thing are the combi-weapons. Simple and effective.
Special weapons:
Most of the plague marines are made out of the one pose marines that I have come across.
These are just attempts to have some variation in the two dark vengeance models.
Cultists are now WYSIWYG with my army list.
I'm going to try zenithal highlighting with these. I have the army painter spray cans of army green and nurgling green. I'll just have to check what I come up with them. The plan is to add an extra color and edge highlight them after the spray. Lastly just a big spray of agrax earthshade and that should do it. I'd like to add red to them somehow but I'm not yet sure how. Shoulder pads maybe? Or just the lower part of the legs as if they are blood splatter or something. I'll just have to see how they come out after the initial highlighting. I'm open for suggestions.

It's been a while without an update. I've been changing jobs like shirt for the last month or so, so the hobby has been effectively neglected. This month should be easier so I'm expecting to have the rest of the army modelled and basecoated in a few weeks.
Some progress has been made though. A test model for zenithal highlighting which ended as a sort of disaster. The spray cans lack the control needed for this kind of thing. I was aware of this before I started, but I expected much more. I've since read from other threads that the army painter cans spray the paint in much larger area than most other sprays. Also the necrotic flesh spray is WAY too bright to be used straight on the army green. So the plan has changed to paint these guys the old way.
Paint test wasn't a complete disaster though. What I learned was that the army green is a color that pleases my eye in very nurgley way. The color is perfect, so all marines are going to get a basecoat of this. The other thing I learned is that the necrotic flesh (which I incorrectly called nurgling green in the last post) is close enough match for GW nurgling green. The color seems also sort of fitting for clothing and skin so I will be using this for cultists.
And as no post should be without a picture, here's the test model...

The army is starting to shape up...
Most of the army is now primed/basecoated, so I have started the brushwork. As the zenithal highlighting idea was abandoned, these guys are painted the old-fashioned way. I actually have built a sort of lightbox and when I get these guys home I'll get some proper pictures. The WIP pictures are taken with a smartphone for now, so the skin has been over-exposured badly. please be kind
First off some cultists:
Basecoated necrotic flesh, painted random parts of their rags zandridust and mechrite red before washing agrax earthshade all over. Skin is drybrushed screaming skull with druchii violet wash and another drybrush of screaming skull. As said before, the photo quality makes the skin look worse than it really is. Better pics on the way. Still all the metals and detailing to do.
Plague marines:
Actually done almost the same way as the cultists, but basecoated army green and line highlighted with nurgling green before washing. All the lenses will be red eventually. I'm inclined to add more red but I'm not sure how to do it without adding too much. I don't want it to be any more than a subtle spot color here and there. Suggestions?
Helbrute:
Only drybrushing and washing here. Drybrushed nurgling green (fleshy areas) and zandri dust (bony areas) here and there before washing agrax earthshade. A few selected spots done the same way as the skin afterwards.
I'm still struggling with how to add the red. I want to have it somewhere to get the "red mist" part to the army. I love the color and because red is evil it has to be there I'm also planning to add a small force of red corsairs some day as I love the Huron model and all the background. That way I can use all the models together and have something similar so they don't look like two totally different armies.

The plague host is starting to look like a real army. Everything but a rhino is now finished to the point where only metals and all the little details are missing. Pictures coming this weekend. I'm also looking to play my first game with them on saturday. And to play a game you need a battleground!
I've had the realm of battle gameboard lying around unpainted forever. So a quick after a search through the forums and a little planning, I picked up three army painter spray cans (four actually, but three different colors). The board looks like this now:
Basecoated Wolf Grey, dusted Matt White, sprayed ridges Uniform Grey, again light dusting of Matt White. Minimum work, simple and effective. This was done in about 15 minutes and I think it looks pretty good! Only detailing with some snow flock and random patches of dead grass left to do. While I was at it, I also primed a bastion, adl and a battlescape. The ruined tank and the trees on battlescape got some work done straight away.
I'm quite pleased to the way the rust ended up looking. I might actually use the same technique to the plague marines.

The game went pretty well comsidering I won 10-6 victory points. The game went bad as I only had about a tenth of my army left at the end and had it not ended to turn 5 I would have probably been tabled. It was good game though as I learned a lot about my army for it's first game. Firstly, I need bigger threats to the list. Which means that I'll have to kit my havocs differently (I actually ran out of parts to make all of them so for now they were just 7-man squad with two missile launchers and an autocannon). It also means that my raptors need to be more specific in their mission on the board. Secondly, I think I'll have to forget the fact that cultists are scoring and just focus on the fact that a full squad will let my lord walk across the board unscathed anywhere he wants. I'm not sure how my sorcered did though. He was almost like mocking me as he seemed to achieve nothing during the game, failing at least half of his psychic tests (luckily without perils but still). Then at the end he eventually won me the game by casting iron arm and tanking plasma shots from two full squads of tactical marines and a squad of deathwing terminators, allowing the remaining two plague marines to get to the 4-point objective at the center of the board.
The next models on the workstation might be a maulerfiend and a heldrake (the helsquid kind of conversion that pops out every now and then).
As for pictures, I have an updated look on the palanquin:
I'm not yet sure what to do with the huge icon on the palanquin. Maybe rusting it the same way as the rhino on the battlescape. It might be too overpowering though. Any input on the matter will be highly appreciated.
I also dug out a Huron Blackheart I did a couple years back. I might get back to it someday or just get a new one as the figure is one of my all-time favourites.
