Hello, long time lurker, first time poster

Been working on this project for the past few months and so far the feedback at our LGS has been encouraging. hoping to launch a kickstarter in the next few days and looking for some feedback before continuing

the walls come in 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 inch sections, all walls are double sided, the floors come in several sizes and they are made so the buildings/structures can be put together and taken apart in minutes and stored in a small box ( I should be able to fill an entire table with a shoe box'es worth). we are burning more prototypes this week and should have more pictures by the end of the week.

take a look and drop me a note with any comments you have

thanks

Saw this over at the main forums and love your work! That detailing has to take a PILE of laser time though.

Looks good. Running through those cross-beam sections is going to play hell on AROs though.

Very interesting. I hope you keep working on this.

I had considered getting a laser cutter but unless I had a good business plan it was just far too costly.

I am interested to see how that mesh texture on the floor tiles paints up.

I have a question, do you think how you made that mesh could be used to texture a cut stone effect? Something like you would see on a castle wall, like this:

I see multiple companies doing blocks/bricks but none of them texture the actual brick itself.

I have a feeling it would be terribly inefficient.

Laser cutting is designed in vector-based software. You "draw" the design you want in different colors and calibrate different laser intensities for each color.

I'd imagine etching a full stone texture would be difficult. Imagine drawing a stone texture in Powerpoint using only the line tool.

If you're looking for a stone texture, you may find better luck in places like Hirst Arts that make molds for plaster.

No you can engrave raster images with a laser, we did exactly that for a guy's custom board a while back.

Textured spray paint can make it look like stone too. The top of this building was done with it. Masking lines for the parts between bricks would be tough but doable on MDF buildings.

Those look pretty sweet. I'm kind of curious what it takes to get into this field. Do you mind me asking what laser cutter you used, how much it cost, and how long it took to burn those?

What are those buildings?

Everyone, the OP just launched his KS campaign.

Go and give it a look. Very useable for simple up and down spacehulk-for-a-day.

Patyrn, if I remember correctly those buildings were something one of CDK's gaming buddies picked up in a whim. They were cheap, on sale stationary trays. The 'windows' are the original colour of the tray underneath which were masked off before painting the rest. Turned out great and dirt cheap!
I should stress the 'if I remember correctly' bit. I may have made that up...

On topic: The kickstarter looks pretty good, if I had funds to spare i'd be tempted. I just feel spoilt for choice these days though. There is so much laser cut MDF terrain for Infinity now that I'd probably end up going with what I know and trust. I wish all the best to the author though and as I say, I would be tempted.

You would be surprised of how much you can engrave and the level of detail that can be done, main issue becomes DPI resolution settings, the higher resolution the more dots the laser has to put down, for example a 400 DPI letter size sheet takes about 30 minutes to raster a full image, at 600 DPI it takes about 75 minutes. so burning an entire floor or wall with that level of detail will kill my time/profit treshold. burning a full sheet in Photo mode will probably run for about 2 hours. I ran a picture of my daughter as a test on a 4 X 6 and that took 30 minutes and it looks damn nice.

By image placements and creative use of voids I have managed to cut down my sheet raster time to 10/20 minutes per side depending if I'm doing walls or floors the good news is that vector cutting with out details are only 10 minutes. hopefully the kickstarter will go high enough for me to purchase the faster laser so I have 2 running at the same time to mass produce the run

Mostly right CL. They were plastic containers from the Container Store. My buddy put stickers on for the windows then painted them. After dried a little you peel off the stickers. For the roof it's textured paint.

I must say, that is rather excellent! It's very focussed on gameplay which is extra nice.

Hey David,

Yeah I had a feeling that might be the case.

Alternatively, I wonder if cutting a master stone texture would be doable and then casting it. If your gonna do that it may be better to just use real stones then. (I have never been particularly impressed with stone texture sprays/paints)

Again just food for thought, your the expert and can judge if this would be practical.

I would be tickled pink if my semi random musings ended up helping you and giving you ideas.

I have bookmarked your kickstarter. I have not pledged yet, and I won't promise to but I am interested. I would still like to see some painted/finished examples first.
