Let's just ignore this first post now, here's how things are going to be from now on; this blog is all about the Ultramarines 3rd company, backed up by elements of the 1st, and accompanied by a force of Grey Knights and Imperial Knights from House Hawkshroud.

I've made a start on building the command squad, here's the pf/melta Sergeant and Company Champion. I've thrown in a few pictures of the Chaplain, he still needs his jump pack painting. Apologies for poor picture quality, work has me knackered so I just can't be bothered taking proper photos tonight. Any C&/orC?

Here's a few pictures of the fully built command squad.

Full squad.

The flamer isn't yet glued, and I'm going to do some green stuffing later. I plan on doing a few studs on the Sergeant's leg and pteruges on Fabian.

All C&C appreciated.

Did a bit of green stuffing, nothing much, but it's a start. I plan on doing some more pteruges on Fabian's waist and then making a belt buckle out of an ork skull.

Not much done, I've been hectic with work, I did manage to pre-order a Master of Relics, order some bitz online, buy a Devastator squad and do some more work on Fabian.

The servo-arm still needs some cleaning up with GS, but I'm quite happy with the Apothecary.

Melta bombs are cool, so are servo skulls and brass etch shoulder pads.

The Devastator squad to be built. I intend to use the Master of Relics as the Sergeant, these will also be painted up as Imperius Reavers, hence the one armed marine, soon to be test model.

All C&C greatly appreciated guys, thanks for looking.

Small update, I started painting the Chaplain's jump pack, but I thought that would be a bit of a dull picture, so I thought I'd carry on with my building of Fabian. I'm just waiting on the Tyranid and Ork skulls to arrive in the post, then I can glue them to his trophy chain around the back, and belt respectively. I think a cloak would be major overkill and make him look too busy, but I'm open to opinions on this. I won't be getting his gun for a while though, as GW are getting my Sternguard upgrade pack and Master of Relics sent out on the same day.

I don't know if anyone is actually following this, but I'd really love to get some feedback on the Captain so far, I'm interested in some brutal honesty so I know whether it's actually any good or not.

I'm not sure if it's just the mix of brass/greenstuff/diferent plastics/finecast, but he seems very busy. Just a lot of stuff going on. The glare in the photo does not help either. I suspect once primed and painted, a lot of that will go away, but it's my impression at the moment. But I would be more careful layering more stuff on him

What's up with the greenstuff on his left leg? I get the hanging strip things, we see those a lot, but the leg work looks like part of a robe, and I don't see that anywhere else on the mini.

As someone else who fields the 3rd Company of the Ultramarines, I love following your work. Particularly your Cpt. Fabian. It's nice to see someone painting him in his prime. For me, one of my dreadnoughts has the RT era captain insignia above the sarcophagus and "Fabian" on one of the scrolls. Even in death, he serves...

Hey man, thanks for the feedback. After looking at Fabian, I've decided to leave him be for now, and just start painting him, he's primed at the moment. The leg just looks a little chunky in the photos, in real life it looks like a real leg, not a robe. Hopefully my Fabian won't end up suffering the same fate as yours though!

Here's the painting I've started so far too.

Right, I've actually done a tiny bit of work today, it's not much, but I need to keep resting my hand so I don't damage it even more.
Here's the group shot

Chaplain done, just needs basing.

Apothecary and Champion, VERY WiP right now.

Fabian with his nice new gun, auxiliary grenade launcher and all. I know he's aiming high, this is intentional, I imagine him aiming at a Hive Tyrant or Carnifex, or some other Tyrannic MC.

And here's the latest addition that I picked up today, just has the first coat of primer for now. But here's my new Devastator Sergeant, with his Mk.VI lunch box.

I'm not overly pleased with him, but he's atleast to table top standard, so that's okay. The servo arm will be a counts as powerfist.

All C&C welcome and appreciated.
Cheers in advance guys.

I like the bloody hand. Makes it look like he's been doing his job. But nothing as gruesome as a field amputation, as his chainsword is clean and there are no splatters of blood. Probably just claiming the Chapter's Due from the fallen.

I like the extras on the backpack.

That was exactly the look I was going for, like he's collected from the fallen at some point recently. Cheers though dude!

The only critique would be that the marine with the power sword pointed down will have a hard time when used in CC in game, other than that, models look great.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, I've been working mega hard to be #1 sales monkey in our store in work, and get our store to #1 in the region (both are firmly accomplished), and had my usual women problems.

Iv done lots of building, no painting, but here's the update. Scrapped Fabian to make a new one based on the Chapter Champion with the Primarch's Wrath and relic blade, got some terminators, working on an assault squad with Lord Executioner as a VS, got some new sternguard, with the Tyrannic War Veterans and a Chronus conversion to join up too, built an old tactical squad, kitbashed with new bitz, got 2 new tactical squads to build and a terminator Chaplain too. Oh and Grey Knights.

That's a lot of flamers on the sternguard. You been two-timing with Salamanders? Auspexes are back to being actual wargear, so someone who's fussy about WYSWYG might give you some flack for putting one on a normal trooper. I know I'm back to having to pay points for the one my Librarian has been carrying since 3rd ed. Not that I mind, it's a useful bit of kit.

Looking good, as always.

Thank you guys, I'm quite proud of these badboys like.
As for the auspex, I don't really use them, I just think that every squad should have one for fluffiness, just to satisfy my own modelling OCD. And the flamers are because these guys are my 'Nid hunters, they'll be getting the Tyrannic War vets joining, lo armed with combi-flamers, and some Tyranid trophies too, so the flames are to tackle the swarms of gribblies.

Oh and I dropped him after I got annoyed with him not looking as good as I wanted, so I just decided to start afresh with something that already looked like a badass Ultramarine really.

Small update, I added all the extras to Fabian, and I must say, he's looking pretty slick. The Primarch's Wrath just seemed to scream 'Master of the Arsenal' to me, plus a relic blade for combat.

Cheers guys, nice to have compliments from other Ultramarine players.
Here's the latest build, Assault squad Icarus. 11 models left to build until I begin painting, I'm thinking of booking a week off work to just paint solidly.

Made in us
The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

After your character builds, these guys seem so basic. Not that it's a bad thing, they are after all, basic troops. Having a captain model as a sarge doesn't help here. He is a lot more ornate then the rest of his squad

Have you shown us a tactical squad? I don't know how your army balances out as a whole. I know your characters and veterans are very baroque, but am unsure what the average joe with a bolter looks like.

These guys are your basic marines, with one or two extra bits each. Which is a nice balance of having character and personality, without getting cluttered.

Then your "sarge" has detail on every surface.

And your captain has all the details, plus the brass and chain.

Without seeing it painted and assembled, I can only guess. But I suspect once finished, you are going to have your characters sitting like jewels on a bed of ultramarine velvet. They will be the focus point, and the troopers are just going to be there to provide contrast. I could be wrong, paint and baseing might tie them together better then I think. But it's almost like you are building two separate armies, the gulf in details is so large.

I don't want to sound to critical, I do love your work. These are just the thoughts that are filtering through my pre-coffee mind.

I might take the iron halo off the captain, as that is often their distinctive badge of rank. Don't forget that they changed the number of special weapons per 5 man squad. If you plan on building these guys up to a full 10 man, not a big deal, but you could put a second flamer in there if you wanted.

Thanks man, when painted I do plan on unifying everything a bit better, but it's only really the veterans and veteran sergeants who are going to look pimped out, the majority of the army is going to be quite basic, with flashy paint jobs and unified basing. There's a tactical squad in the huge photo dump a few squads up, it's an old tac squad kitbashed with the new sternguard, so they look a little flash, but I'm going to use decals and paint to bling up my line troopers to a varying degree.

I am going to build up to a 10 man assault squad though, probably using some vanguard changenswords, as I'm going to have all of those painted up really ornately.

I'll take your feedback on though when I'm painting up though, get a unified front, rather than a few gems in the ruff.

Right guys, here's an update on how little I've done.

This is Virtuous Judgement, Knight of House Hawkshroud, still needs his base finishing, final transfers and a few touch ups.

Made in us
The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

Very nice. I’m not sure what the color scheme of that guy is supposed to be, but the white looks unfinished to me. It might just be the fact that I prime white, so when I see it on the edges, the first thing that crosses my mind is “I wonder what color that is going to be when he’s done?” For things like White Scars, I -know- that’s the color they are when finished, so I don’t wonder. Once you finish the base, and it is obviously no longer a WIP, that might go away. And people who prime in non-white colors might never even consider it.

The other thing that leapt out at me is the transfers that are not flat on the hull. On first glance, they look awesome. But then I see the transparent film, and am jarred out of believing they are painted on by the crew. That might be part of your finishing touches, but I think a little cutting so nothing is floating in the air would help.

Overall it looks very nice though. Good to see you are still working on your army!

Thanks for the advice Nevelon, I've taken it in board and fixed the Knight now, I'll be putting pictures up later. But for now, here's a little update to show I am still working on my crusade.

And Captain Fabian with the Burning Blade:

Nice blending on the burning blade. I keep meaning to put one together, but I hate blending. The other option would be to try to greenstuff flames, and that’s probably beyond me as well. So I just field the Teeth of Terra.

Nice army shot, looking forward to details.
