Hello Dakka, I'm relatively new to 40k and need some help creating an army list, here is a full list of the units i have:
HQ:
- Command Squad consisting of a commander (laspistol, power sword and refractor field), medic, master vox and 2 veterans

- Tech priest Enginseer

Elites:
- Storm trooper squad of 10 including 1 melta gun and 1 plasma gun

Troops:
- Infantry Platoon:
- Platoon Command Squad consisting of 1 officer, 1 melta, 1 vox caster and 2 veterans
- Veteran Squad of 10 including 1 sniper, 1 lascannon and demo charges
- Infantry Squad of 10 including veteran sergeant, 1 melta gun, 1 sniper and a lascannon

- Special Weapons Squad (nicknamed BBQ squad) of 6 including 1 heavy flamer, 3 flame throwers, 1 guardsmen with chainsword and bolt pistol and 1 regular guardsmen.

Heavy Support:
- Leman Russ with heavy flamer, lascannon, battle cannon, two heavy bolter sponsons, dozer blade, heavy stubber and smoke launchers
- Basilisk with twin linked storm bolter, heavy bolter, extra armour and dozer blade
- Valkyrie with lascannon and rocket pods

I also have a Baneblade for Apocalypse and a skyshield landing pad for fortifications.
Planned future units include a penal legion squad and a hydra flak tank.

What kind of army list can i make with these units and what units does anyone recommend for the future?

If you have the bits to make the valk into a vendetta, awesome. Do it.

This seems like a pretty core army list, by which I mean you could really take it a lot of different ways. You could go for footslogging IG, in which case just get a ton more guardsmen and plant them all around. Or you could go aircav, get another vendetta and call the IS a VS and put both of the VS's into the vendetta to claim objectives and cause havoc.

As for the list right now, I'd grab a second IS to fill out that platoon, put the VS in the vendetta/valkyrie and probably put some of the flamers from the special weapons in the VS.

Keep all your vehicles, park the basilisk behind a mountain, use the russ to help bat down those MEQ's encroaching on your territory.

Drop the enginseer, I don't find them worth the points.

Deep strike the Storm Troopers as a suicide squad to pop some vehicles/take down MEQ's with their hotshot lasguns.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad you suggested the second VS as the first one is one of my favourite units despite being totally annihilated in my first game.
Two questions though:
If I rearrange the flamers into the other squads but want to keep the special and heavy weapons in them at the moment how would i go about doing it?
and
If I get another vendetta, is it worth getting the hydra for their protection in the skies as well as for mowing down a few infantry units? (my friend who i play against the most has Tau and he just purchased a sunshark bomber)

I'm just going to continue my thoughts between your two threads on this one so I don't have to keep switching between the two :-p

(for posterity: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/544962.page)

Rearranging the special weapons into the vet squads is easy, as each vet squad can have up to 3 and you currently have 1, although if you're going to do that, I'd try and work my way towards some plasma or meltas in those squads, as they tend to be more effective against a wider range of opponents. The reason I say that is a "special weapons" squad on it's own is awkwardly easy to kill and has to be fairly close to be effective, in general not a good combination for IG.

If I get another vendetta, is it worth getting the hydra for their protection in the skies as well as for mowing down a few infantry units? (my friend who i play against the most has Tau and he just purchased a sunshark bomber)

The vendettas, believe it or not, are pretty good anti-air themselves. What I'd be more worried about is taking care of his ground units that pose a threat to your fliers. This is where my personal playing style comes into conflict with what it looks like you're building, because I run a decent number of guardsmen with a heavy weapons team in each of the IS's. If you're going mostly mech you have a couple of options:
- Use artillery to take out their anti-air (not a fan, as artillery can be used better elsewhere)
- Deep strike those stormtroopers to pop anti-air vehicles (unreliable, as you won't have them on the first turn)
- Run another squad of veterans in a chimera as a tank-hunting squad, fitting them with meltaguns and meltabombs.
- Use the russ's lascannon to take 'em out. This is a bit unreliable though, as you only get one shot (or the ordinance could scatter)

As for the 500 point list, I REALLY like russes, but I'd be wary of taking one because it seems like infantry is the way to beat your friend's tau currently. The key will really be keeping the basilisk safe until the firewarriors are taken care of, then all of your guardsmen can have free reign of the board. Shadowsun, and the skyray are more for taking out MC's and Vehicles rather than the lowly guardsman.

Thanks for the advice the help is much appreciated. I like the idea of running the veterans in the chimera and deep striking the stormtroopers, all i need to do is buy a chimera and finish painting my stormtroopers and I'll be ready to rumble.
