Hey everyone, just wanted to show you the results I've had from the new texture paint. This one is blackfire earth.
I started by painting the base dryad bark
Then applied one coat of the texture paint
Washed agrax earthshade
Dry brush ushabti bone
Added some flock
I am very happy with the results and its very quick, maybe 2 minutes worth of work on the base (obviously not including drying time) but its very good. I thought I'd post this in case anyone was wondering about these texture paints and what they're like.
I'd definitely say try them out
James

That basing is amazing - but i'm more bothered about that brilliantly painted gaunt!

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

I'm glad you got good results out of the texture paints and your gaunt does look very nice. However, there are cheaper ways to achieve the same (if not better) results of the texture paints.
For instance, a 12mL bottle of GW texture paint will set you back $4 and if you want more than one color, you have to buy more. But you could purchase a 200mL (16 times more product!) tub of Vallejo Pumice Paste for about $8 that has no color but can be easily painted (or have color mixed in to it).

Haha I currently have 4 painted and my hive tyrant almost done, it's a fairly quick scheme but I'm a slow painter. I paint them in pairs and from start to finish with drying times etc 2 takes a couple of hours

I was considering this paint for my Gorger base, so nice to see they look good, I'll be grabbing a pot this week and doing something similar
Looks nice and simple and completes your nicely painted model dude.

I don't like the GW texture paints, they're ok but in such a small tub they're pointless. To base 50+ Necron warriors I would've needed about 5, so that's £12 for not very much.
I buy Tamiya texture paints, they're ok. I keep looking at the Vallejo ones, especially the water ones. Has anyone used those?
The basing + 'nid look great though! It'll be a nice looking army all together

Honestly you would be better off buying some pumice paste, or using a combination of gap filler and sand if you are basing large numbers of things.
As to the original post, I like the texture paints, however I think they are better used for battle damage and weathering on the legs etc. than basing.

I haven't read any of the other messages, but did you know that there were other ways to texture your bases? Some of them are even less expensive! (I keed, I keed).
I was actually curious if the different texture paints have different textures or if they are the same textures but different colors.

Oh, I use PVA glue (white glue it's known as? or wood glue?) and sand mostly, it's a hell of a lot cheaper, it just takes time. I'm building up a Necron force at the minute and they're my 'assembly line' army, so I've managed to get 50 warriors painted up in about 10-15 hours, and that includes basing. The Tamiya stuff dries within 45 minutes and then I can just add leaves etc
I've always found PVA takes a lot longer to dry, I mix it about 60/40 with water so it's a little thinner and doesn't gloss over when it dries.

I recently switched over to these and am quite a fan, they look pretty much identical to my old method of sand and pva yet take a fraction of the time and is easier to control. Yes it costs more but time is money!
I used on the flying base:
Armageddon dust
Agrax earth shade
Drybrush ushabti bone
For the Enforcer captain:
Astrogranite
Nuln oil
Longbeard grey

Paying all this money for models and everything else and trying to save literally a couple of pounds over the corse of an entire army seems a bit ridiculous to me. That one pot could easily do 20 or 30 bases I reckon and for £2 that's a bargain to me!

Just FYI, Vallejo pumice has a different texture, which is to be expected probably because it is either a different material or because its density is much higher than Citadel's texture paint. Vallejo looks more like asphalt or a lava flow or mud whereas Citadel's looks like the images you see in this thread.
I personally prefer paying more for Citadel for that specific look and for not having to paint it. A drybrush, with an optional wash and/or secondary drybrush is all it requires. If I wanted to save money, PVA and sand would probably be the cheapest option anyway.

I can't see it lasting that long, whenever I've used it to thin levels it's just coloured paint with a few flecks of texture in it, so I've had to layer it on quite thick to get a decent look.

The Vallejo textures each have a different texture in addition to colour, so you can get the texture you want. This article shows 4 of the 8 or so Vallejo textures. In addition to these there are also the dark earth, light earth, oxid paste and sand textures that I can recall. This image shows 4 of them after they've dried. Or painted black for an easier comparison. I have the 3 of the 4 I mentioned that aren't shown here, I should do the same to help show what they look like.

I use this for basing. Much more economical than $3 / pot...plus its slightly moldable/sculptable.
And, I can paint it any color that I want once its dry.

I like the texture paint and even use it for weathing on tank tracks and around the lower level bits of th vehicles.
My only problem is they all dry out on me quite quickly (within a few months). I thought it may have been a case of getting careless with sealing the lid but I've replaced mine twice since and neither has got the bottom without it drying out. I've tried mixing it back to the same consistency with water but its just not the same as when its new.
Thats just my 2cents anyway.

Took some pics of the Vallejo textures I have, some of which weren't in the article I linked above.
Painted charcoal, drybrushed light grey and washed black, to get some uniform contrast. Top left to bottom right: White Pumice, Grey Pumice, Black Lava; Oxid Paste, Brown Earth, Dark Earth; Sand Paste, Heavy Gel, Water Effect. Not sure why I included water effect haha. Pics of unpainted wet and dry textures spoilered below.

Are the water effects good?Do they look ok? I've got some Woodland Scenics stuff that you have to warm up first but for 25mm bases, I can imagine it being a nightmare to apply before it cools.
The rest look similar to Tamiya, I might check some of the Vallejo out, thanks for the post!

White Pumice, Grey Pumice, and Oxid Paste when dry appear to be the closest match to Citadel Texture depending on how many layers of the latter one applies. When wet, none of them look the same.
I wish I had known about Vallejo's sand paste though. I've been using Armageddon Dust. The extra step of painting the base yellow over the material may be worth it to get a more realistic sand effect.
