I'm trying to get something working for me, and I've found a core of units I like in 2k points So far, I've got 1345 points, but I can't find a space marine HQ I like that fits the gunline approach too well.

HQ:
Commander - MSSS, C&CN, PEN, Iridium Armour, NSJ, VRT - 162 points
Troops:
Tactical Squad - 10 man, plasma gun, missile launcher, rhino - 215 points
Tactical Squad - 10 man, plasma gun, missile launcher, rhino - 215 points
Firewarriors - 54 points

Elite:
XV8 Crisis Suit - 2 Suits, 4MP - 104 points

Heavy:
Devastator Squad - 10 man, 4 lascannon - 310 points
Whirlwind - 85 points
Hammerhead - Longstrike, submunition rounds, smart missile system, disruption pod, sensor spines - 195 points

The tau commander joins the devastator squad to give them twin-link, ignore cover, and tank hunters. I need to find some units that work well with this list. I don't have any more tau models, so fielding more tau isn't going to work for me (as much as I want a riptide ). I'm trying to make this a TAC style list that can handle enemy armour (I'm looking at you wave serpents and your silly shield), as my meta is full of tanks.

I have tried pedro + sternguard with combi-weps in a pod, but it always seems underwhelming and they almost never make anything near their points back. I recently ordered a thunderfire cannon, and I hope that ends up working well my gunline approach. What other marine models can I add to increase my firepower in just 655 points? (555 with the thunderfire whenever it gets here). I also need a marine HQ that actually fits the theme of this list and not a cc oriented model like they all seem to be.

Have you tried a Libby with Gate? You can use him to jump around with Terminators or Sternguard. It works well to say the least. That's like 300 points. But it creates a problem for the enemy in their backfield. With the extra I'd take another Tac Squad, just my opinion.

Would I gate around assault termies or melee termies? I've never really had great success with libby's or termies, but I'd love to use some of them.

I liek the idea of Longstrike in the devastator squad. All those bonuses he brings, that is going to put some serious hurting on.

For the gunline approach about the only shooty marine HQ would probably be the Master of the Forge with a Conversion Beamer? And I'm not sure, but if you added him too the squad would be beamer also benefit from the Tau bonuses?

The only benefit he would get is the tank hunter and ignore cover. The tau commander doesn't twin-link weapons, only allow re-rolls of misses. I thought about a master of the forge, but I don't have that model or a conversion beamer to equip him with. Also, what else should I do with the remaining points if I do take the MotF w/ beamer?

You're probably better waiting a couple of weeks til the new marine codex comes out. The shooting versions of the new Centurion unit sounds like it might fit well into your list (although it's another heavy support slot I think). Also, Tigerious sounds like he'll be pretty good in the next codex, taking him with three divination could boost a lot of your shooting.

Otherwise, maybe a couple of shooty dreadnoughts? Not that competative these days, but would fit in with your list quite well. Or a Stormraven?

Take either White Scars or Ultra Marines imo.

I think you should take a bike captain ~125pts
Bike command squad with 4 gravrifle 1 apoc ~180 (i think)
2x 5man bike squads with 2x gravrifle 1xcombi-gravrifle -145 each

Leaves you 50pts Get your Devs a Rhino, so they can scout/outflank/pure mobility if needed.

Yeah, telling people how this and that is 'garbage' and they should just throw their minis into the trash as they're not as efficient as XYZ.
