Subject: Star Trek Attack Wing: Picard is a beast!

So the other day the wife and I played three games of attack wing. She stomped on me in all 3 with Picard on the enterprise D. Picard took the romulans apart and beat the klinons twice. I do have to say by game 3, I was getting a feel for the klingons but i made a big mistake that cost methe final game. In 1 on 1 ship games Picard and the enterprise are nasty 2 actions a turn and 360 shooting at range 1-2. The toughest thing is once they get in close Picard can target lock and go to battle stationss in the same turn, ouch. I am not complaining, because Picard should be awesome just thought I would share some initial impressions with you all. We will see how Picard handles General Martok next. I also think the better way to take on Picard is to use multiple low point ships that way he can not throw all of his tricks at the same target
So far the game is exceeding all of my expectations can't wait for wave 2.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, it just seemed like the best place to post it.

Blood Angel Chapter Master with Wings

Eh.... some debate on that front... I personally don't think Attack Wing should be in here as A it hasn't earned it's chops like x-wing has, and B it is not an FFG game, and finally C StarTrek and StarWars in the same spot tends to generate... friction... with some more rabid peeps.
Will leave it here for now, but I personally think that the game belongs in misc boardgames. Otherwise, all games using the flight mechanic should be in here, including the WW1 and WW2 wings of xxxxx games. Which would only dilute the 1 game that is immensely popular atm.
That make sense?

OFF-TOPIC: X-Wing and Attack Wing share more in common rules-wise than either of those games share with Wings of War. Plus, they are both popular sci-fi franchises. It stands to reason that most Dakkanauts interested in Attack Wing are most likely to look in this sub-forum for information (as opposed to consigning that information to oblivion in the already-overburdened Misc. Games subforum). And just about every conversation about Attack Wing will likely entail some comparison with X-Wing if for no other reason than to be relatable. There's really no risk of "diluting" X-Wing discussion as it's by far the more popular product; the odd Attack Wing thread shouldn't be too threatening. I'd be happy to continue this discussion off-stage. ON-TOPIC: One thing that really worries me about Attack Wing is balance. With X-Wing, we only have two factions and we've gotten a small number of ships every six months or so. With Attack Wing, we have four factions and as many ships as X-Wing has gotten in over a year -- all right off the bat. The rulebook seems to imply we'll be getting quite a few additional factions, as well. Furthermore, the con exclusives and tournament prizes seem to entail premium content, like the Khan card from GenCon or the rumored dice with more criticals. But even without all of these factors, there's more basic stuff -- like Picard. Now on the face of it, Picard is something like Vader from X-Wing. He grants a bonus action every turn. The thing is, Vader is not just Vader; he's Vader in a TIE Advanced. In Attack Wing, captains can move around -- and by the way, Picard grants a bonus action regardless of whether the ship he is commanding has that specific action on its own action bar. So for the 6-point upgrade, you can significantly change a ship's capacity.

AW is not board game so it didn't really seem right to put it there and misc games is all clogged up with kickstarter notices so real threads just go there to die. If you want to move it there thats cool but nobody is going to see it there. With all of the suppprt wizkids is promisimg it seems like the game is gaining popularity maybe it should get its own forum. Automatically Appended Next Post: -Manchu
We were just using the basic 40 point (43 for the klingons) builds out of the rule book. I think the games balance will sho2 more once people start building lists on there own and playing. There are also so strong interal things such as certain romulan and breen upgrades cost 5 additional points instead of 1 which I like. Also I don't think Picard will be nearly as good against multiple ships. Later this week I might try taking 2 D-7s against him. In our 3rd game the vor'cha came close to taking out the enterprise but I was distracted by some feminine wiles and piked two red maneuvers in a row thus screwing myself. But lets face it Picard is that good, I just look at it as a challenge. Automatically Appended Next Post: -manchu
Oh the elite attack die is not all that it has no blanks an extra hit side and a double hit side. The double hit can still be canceld by a single evade and it is 5 squad points to take. It is also one use only per game, so it is gimmicky but not really earth shattering.

Do you have to spend points from your list to bring that die? If not, it's still crap. If so, it should be a card instead and not be a prize or an exclusive. As far as Picard -- I intend to pit him against 3 D7s in the Kobayashi Maru. He'll be aboard the old Enterprise ... oh, how I wish they had made a regular-sized Constitution-class ship rather than the pipsqueak version. Well, here's hoping they do an Enterprise-A. I don't think there was a clix version of it, however. Automatically Appended Next Post: EDIT: I stand corrected.

EDIT: I stand corrected.
Well there is a card to explaim the die. It is5 points from your list but its no different than a crew member or equipment that is one use and discard. The advantage is it is not assigned to any specific ship. I think it is ok.
We solved the size issue with the old style enterprise buy buying the micro machine version and putiing it on the attack wing base. Looks big next to the galaxy but perfect next to reliant.

So the premium die is basically a faction neutral use-then-discard upgrade? That sounds fine to me, except that (as with any promo piece) it kind of sucks for competitive players that don't end up winning it.

Ya he is a Vader that can switch ships. Kirk is no slouch ether with the 2 upgrades for 3 points whatever they are and reveal them when the time is right.
I'm a huge Klingon fan but wow talk about action heavy. And the Romulans are wow they are tricksey.
All in all its a great game with the rules based in another great game. I can't wait to see a Borg Cube on the board.

Be thankful your wife didn't take Data with Picard in the Enterprise. My friend did that and pummeled everyone he played! I've heard they're filthy together.

Umm, awkward Data moment.
Picard is a good combo with any crew member who benefits from one of the four action types he confers as extra per turn. Now imagine a whole bridge of them ...

For now I think klingons are the way to go, in our last game the tractor beam really seamed to hurt so I think I am going to build on that.
