I think you should have him add a glaze to even out the colors on the gem stones, and then add a gloss varnish. Right now they look pretty good but that'll finish them off nicely and make them stand out, as he clearly took some time on them.
Good work overall though, definitely the beginnings of some advanced techniques here!

Pose looked a little wonky from the front but the whole model looks very good. A wash on the ribbed joints and a glaze on the gems and it would look even better, but right now it's some really good quality. Your son's on his way to being a fine painter.
