Hey guys!
Welcome to my first Project Log on Dakka!

I decided a few weeks ago to start a new Space Marine army, and I picked out the Iron Hands. I was trying to think of ways that I could make them a little less boring to paint and I thought of painting the Torso and a few other details a Deep red colour.

It was then when took a look through the new SM Codex, I noticed the Iron Lords.
I had seen them previously but not many pictures come up of them painted and thought it would be pretty cool to start up a chapter that is not too common and that tied in with the colours that I had in mind.

And thus this project was born!

So far I have some units assembled and primed, and decided to start with the new multi-part Sternguard kit.
I've painted the Sergeant to completion (Almost ) and have the other members of the squad base coated and washed.

So enough babbling on, on to pictures!

I tried to add a stubble effect to his head to look like it has been shaved off rather than being completely bald, It's not too visible on the photos because of the low light they were taken in. I'll have some better ones up soon! (Promise)

I also free handed the Iron Lords logo on his Shoulder Pad, but I left out the White Halo as there wasn't enough space for me to get a decent circle shape.

(Just realised that these photos have made his face look really washed out although in person its properly shaded and highlighted, I'll try and get some better pictures soon!)

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result of this and would love to know what you guys think!

Thanks,
HoeJarris

(Finally managed to actually post the pictures too! )

Hey guys, quick update.

I've painted the next Veteran from the Sternguard kit.
He needs a few touch ups and his base painted, but here he is!

Face Close-up:

I used a shoulder pad from the Iron hands upgrade kit:

Back:

Back Close-up with 'Ferrus' text after their legendary Primarch!

I've got alot of ideas buzzing around my head for a commander model, that can also double up as Chapter Master should I need that upgrade for a game.
I've got the commander box set and pieces from various sources including the Sternguard kit.
I'm going to be taking inspiration from a White Dwarf article from wayyyy back, (WD No.310!) which was of a Crimson Fist Chapter Master by Matt Parkes.

I also have some left over marines from the old tactical marines kit and one of the new kits, plus Severin Loth which will be used a normal Librarian, a pack of 5 Mk IV Assault marines, and the FW 'Champion and Master of the signal' pack

Also not in this picture I have one 5 man squad of Tartarus Pattern Terminators, and a Contemptor Dreadnought.
Lots of stuff to get on with, so expect more updates soon!

Thanks guys,
HoeJarris

Nice color scheme and that's a great looking free-hand symbol!

Contemptor Dreadnought you say? That one I really want to see!

Thank you very much!

I've got a few new pictures for you guys!

First off the third veteran from my Sternguard squad:

Group shot of the squad so far:

Still to paint a Veteran with a Heavy Bolter, and one more with a Combi-Flamer.

And since you asked so nicely!

He was a pickup from Ebay, he was already built and primed, but had the weapons attached and was a lot cheaper than direct from FW!

Stay tuned for more updates over the weekend!

Thanks!
HoeJarris

(By the way I have no idea why that picture is at the bottom of my post, and I can't get rid of it because it's not in the post itself! )

@bebopdrums2424 Thanks man! very cool having you comment on my stuff as I have been following your log for a while now and your stuff is great!

@Paradigm Thanks! I was never very good at painting flesh, especially faces and since I've been practicing it has been getting better. To have someone say it looks good is great!

For those of you wondering what the Crimson Fists Chapter Master I mentioned looks like, Here is a picture:

I plan to make my Captain/Chapter Master look sort of like this, I'll be changing the weapons but the pose should stay relatively similar.
So I'll be beefing up the normal commander box to fit the Iron Lords theme, and will be using plasticard spacers under his feet to make him stand taller than his fellow marines.

I'll be doing more work over the weekend so more updates to come!

Thanks,
HoeJarris

@Tyranidcrusher Thanks man!

I have completed another veteran, bringing the total to four out of five completed!
Really happy with how this squad is turning out and just hope the rest of the army can look as good.

Here he is:

Reasonably happy with this guy, he turned out better than I thought he would while he was being painted, he just needs a few touch ups.

Now I only have to paint the Heavy Bolter marine, and I'm also thinking about building a sixth veteran with the Heavy Flamer option so that I can interchange them.

Thanks guys!

Hey guys!
Sorry for the long pause in updates, my Job and life have been getting in the way and I haven't had a lot of time to paint! :(
I was going to prime and get my miniatures ready for painting this weekend but obviously the British weather had other ideas.

I managed to finish off the Heavy Bolter Veteran which means that the squad is finished!

Here he is:

Group Shot of the whole squad:

I also managed to pretty much finish a Terminator, I'm not happy with the sword at all though as my technique that I use for power weapons is usually blue and this is my first time trying green power effects, and I couldn't mix the right tones of colour for it, So I'm thinking of just painting my Power weapons as standard metal.
I accidentally snapped off the blade to the sword too so I'll get a proper fix on that before changing the colour of it.

I wanted to make my terminators look like they have been fighting in the war for longer than the veterans have, hence the chipped and damaged armour

I have assembled some more models ready for painting, and have made some more purchases so watch out for those

Thanks guys!

(I need to sort out my photo quality too, they look fine before uploading them here. I'll have to make a booth for taking photos in and use my proper camera rather than my phone too! )

Hey guys got a decent update for you!
I've changed the title of the project log so that I can add some more of my projects into here to motivate me to carry on with them! (also so I don't have loads of logs going around)
I plan to add progress of my other Space Marine chapter I'm doing, and other projects that I have planned.

First update I have for you guys is progress towards my first Iron Lords tactical squad. I have only built the first five marines but I wanted to show you guys the progress of the squad (this is a project log after all! ) I am really happy with how they are looking and just hope that I can do them justice when I paint them up
So here they are, they use some Anvil Industry Gun accessories and parts from the Iron Hands upgrade kit from GW.

Here's the Sergeant of the squad. I know he probably can't carry a Grav Pistol and a Bolter but hey it looks cool!

And heres the second best Marine of the lot, I love this pose!

Earlier in the post I mentioned my other Space Marine Chapter. They are called the Birds Of Ultima, They're a successor to the Blood Angels and come from the Ultima Segmentum sector of the Galaxy.
For this chapter I wanted them to have the Blood Red colour of the Blood Angels but have different coloured sections of armour and Desert Sand coloured Bolters. I saw one Project log on Warseer of some guys very cool Red and white marines of the same colour pattern and thought that they looked awesome and I wanted to use it, but now I have plans to change it up a bit as to not be the same.
I went for a dirty white as did he which I will be keeping, but it will be getting some weathering and chipping on it and so will the red of the main armour panels.
My chapter are Xenos hunters which is where they tie into my Iron Lords as they have both helped each other to battle Hive Fleet Kraken and many Ork Waaaaaaghs.
Heres some pictures of a Sternguard Veteran that I painted a while ago (My painting has improved since then):

And here is a pictures of the Chapters badge on an assault marines Power Fist:

I chose the Humming Bird as my chapter symbol as it's an Ironic thing to have as they are peaceful animal and my Space Marines are hardy war trained super soldiers that are constantly at war, although they fight to keep the peace of the Civilian residents of the human galaxy.

I have also tested out a new technique to my white, which is usually washed with Gryphonne Sepia (Seraphim Sepia now) and Agrax Earthshade. My new technique is to use some Burnt Umber water colour paint that comes in a tube, squeezed into water and mixed to a wash consistency and slathered all over the white, and when it's dry I just go over it with a damp cotton bud to draw off the colour from the surface of the white, so that it stays in the recesses and drys looking like desert dust (which looks great in person!) and I then Sponge chip it with Dryad Bark. I Over did it with the chips but this piece was just a test to see what the colour of the chips would look like on this white.

I have also bought some Tau for an upcoming project I've always wanted to do, so stay tuned for that!

Thanks guys!
HoeJarris

Hey guys!
Sorry about the lack of updates as of late, I've been busy with other things. But I have managed to crack on with some of my Iron Lords and managed to completely finish the Storm talon! I also painted up a legion champion and built the rest of the tactical squad and a commander!

There should be an update up later with some pictures of all the new things, I'll try to take some better quality shots as the others are a bit dark and it doesn't do my painting justice, any suggestions for taking photos in low light would be very much appreciated!

Cheers guys!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hey guys!
I promised an update with pictures, so here it is!

First up we have the Legion champion I have painted up. He is going to be used as a champion in the command squad I will eventually have or as an honour guard to my captain/chapter master should I want to use this in a game.

Here is a close up of his awesome Shoulder Pad. I am really happy with how the skull turned out

Now we move onto my Storm Talon!
This is the first vehicle I have done since starting back up in 40k about 6 months ago after a 4 year break, I am really happy with how it turned out!

A close up of some of the weathering I did on it to simulate dirt from the grimy air.

The Base:

Some of the details on the base:

My captain:

He didn't turn out as grand as the picture I posted for my inspiration, but I like it as it's supposed to fit in with the Legion Champion.
Servo skull or no servo skull?

And here's my Tau colour scheme that I have chosen, really pleased with this and how the skin looks as I've never painted Tau skin before!

Sorry about the absolutely huge dump of pictures, but this is everything I have been doing since my last update.
Hope you like my work!

Cheers guys!

You have good reason to be happy with how that Storm Talon turned out: It looks awesome! Beautiful red and black scheme, nice edge highlight and you did a good job dirtying it up!

I say without Servo-Skull.

I really like that Tau color scheme. In fact, I think it's the first time I have seen a halved Tau scheme. Usually they have a few plates painted with a different color, not the entire leg and arm armor. Nicely done!

@TheDraconicLord
Thank you very much!
I've only seen one or two Tau schemes done in this way and I like it way more than the normal few plates in another colour.

I have now primed the tactical squad and they are in their first stages of painting, I should have them finished soon, so updates will come once each one is complete

I have also made a list for my Tau army at 500pts so I should be able to start building and painting them too!

Cheers guys!

Update time!

It's been about a month since I last updating this log , primarily as I had nothing cool to share with you guys, in the past two weeks I have got some painting down on the Tau and a couple of marines, which now have a new captain for them who is wielding a Thunder Hammer, and looks great!

I should have pictures of everything up tonight if I have the time so look out for another update!

Thanks guys!

Hey guys!
The update is late but it's finally here!
My brand spanking new PS4 has been taking up my painting time since it was released and now I'm slowly getting back into the swing of it.
But hey, it's good to take a break every now and then isn't it?
I should also have a load of free time over the coming weeks as I have a two and a half week Christmas holiday starting next week! (Woo!)
Anyway onto the juicy stuff!

I have finished two tactical marines for my Iron Lords and made a test fit model of my newest captain!

I also free handed the tactical arrow, the ones on the transfer sheet are too small in my opinion

With the commander do you guys think he works, and if not share some ideas

Now, we move onto the Tau.
I absolutely love painting this scheme!

Shas'ui

Pulse Rifle Firewarrior (his highlights on his Rifle need touching up a little)

The first pathfinder! I'm super happy with this and how his skin came out on his face.

Da face.

The first of the mob Kroot I have, most of the actual painting went into base coats and highlights, the main colour just comes from a glaze/wash!
I'm not sure on the spines on his head though and wasn't sure if I should paint them blue?

Battlesuit!

Gah! There's a really obvious mould line on his Plasma Rifle!

Would love to hear what you guys think! And what do you think about the new photos too? I used a lightbox this time and I think they came out good

Thanks again guys!

The flesh tones are great and the armours are look very good in scheme and execution, say Iron Lords, Birds of Ultima or Tau.

I'd keep the kroot spikes as they are, I do not think those would look - or go with the skin tone - better in blue.

And the new pics came out really good as well.

Just to throw my two cents in, maybe trying a more subtle approach in the pathfinder's cloth highlighting, perhaps blending or layering them a bit more? And, on another hand, maybe drilling out the barrels? Great pay-off for a small "conversion", IMHO.

Good stuff on this log, fella, even thoughyou've begun to consort with filthy xenos Your weathering, in particular, is excellent. The newer Captain is better than the previous one as his armour looks more ornate than that of the Legion Champion.
