Having played MtG for a long time before I got into miniature gaming, I've always been on the look out for ways to bring limited play to miniature gaming.

Since you can mix and match ships in your list, and mix and match upgrades on any of those ships, we've been tooling around with limited play for Attack Wing, much like cube play in MtG.

Here's how we've been running it.

X number of packs.
1 ship per pack to ensure that you at least have the choice of a ship.

Draft away.

We haven't figured out the best mix yet, or exactly how many packs is too few/many, but so far, it's been a great way to play Attack Wing and get the most out of those cards that haven't been played once. We tried one 3 player draft that was tons of fun, and a few two player drafts using the Winston format.

If you give it a try, let me know and we can talk about the best way to run the whole thing. Right now there are too few cards and obvious bombs, but that will change with the release of new ships/cards.

Hmm...as an avid Xwinger and MtGer myself, this is a really interesting idea. It honestly never occurred to me to try this.

What mix have you been running?

You say one ship per pack; how does that affect which pilot cards are in the packs?

So far, we've been running either winston draft or, with 3+ players, packs with 1 ship and 5 upgrades. We ran 4 packs each last time.

Don't certain cards come in certian ship packs? I crafty player would know that the X-wing pack would come with Wedge, for example.

You mix up the various cards and create "packs".

The problem with this idea is that X-Wing is balanced with a point system while MTG is balanced by rarity and mana costs. A MTG draft deck with only expensive stuff is going to have serious problems with the early game, while an X-Wing list full of all the most expensive stuff is just plain better than a cheaper one. I suppose there's a bit of opportunity to think about synergy between options, but mostly your draft choices are going to be "pick the most expensive card/ship in the pack".

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

As I said originally, this idea best works with Attack Wing. Perhaps I didn't spell out how this would work.

The goal is to create a 100 pt list. You draft from 6 card packs, and each pack includes one ship. by the end you have 24 cards, usually 3-4 of which are ships.

We've been using one of every upgrade (even unnamed captains), and one of every named ship. Shuffle them up, and create the packs.

All faction penalties/card restrictions apply. So far, creating a 100 pt list has been easy and there are cards left over that may not work in the list.

I don't think this works for X-Wing. At the end of the above process, you're still playing a legal game of Attack Wing. If you did the same in X-wing, you couldn't say the same thing.

Ah, that explains that. I missed the reference to Attack Wing. That makes a lot more sense. We may have to try this out.
