Painting rips and tears in material i usually do by a shape of light then fill in with darker colour, but with black, i cant go any darker so how should i approach making the banner (not metal underneath) im attempting to look weathered??

Don't use black for the black Use darker and darker greys to lend the impression of black. Then when it comes to things like this, black is still available

'Ain't nothing crazy about me but my brain. Right brain? Riight! No not you right brain! Right left brain? Right!... Okay then lets do this!!

Your main colour should be just lighter than black, but basically you highlight both above and below the black line,

Not bad not bad at all and with fabric a rip in black fabric is almost always lighter than the surrounding fabric ..(dust and debris) ...however in the future for that nice worn look start it off with shades of light grey getting darker ..as if its taken that much damage odds are its faded ..and dont forget a little blood spatter and the bit of mud from the ground where the last bearer dropped it as he died..;o) ...
