500 points total

I wasn't terribly happy with my carapace veteran list, and I had some more models built (but not painted), so I decided that I wanted to put more bodies on the table for 500 points. That said, I was really stretched with my model availability, so this is what ended up happening. I had two really good games against a space marine player already; even a land raider crusader could not stand to double-sixes from the Earthshaker cannon! I really liked the mobility options that the penals gave me in playing for the objectives.

If I had it built, I'd probably swap the power axe and krak grenades for a regimental standard, but other than that I'd like to work with this setup for a while. Your thoughts are welcome, as long as you're respectful

Interesting list. At small point games for IG I do like the use of the Penal Legion Squad. Yes, they don't get special weapons, the use of their rule is iffy. However, stubborn, it helps hold objectives.

Only suggestion I would make would be to maybe switch the missle launchers for auto cannons, you will only hit for half the game with your missles whereas with auto cannons you get a hit a turn from each one so popping transports and putting wounds on high toughness models will be a lot easier.

Do you have a Jackson or two to waste on Ebay? Do you like Imperial Armour? If so, a single Tarantula can change the complexion of your first and/or second turn, allowing the dogfaces time to footslog it forward. Sabres and Rapiers are more common and more colorful, but you could always find room to squeeze a Tarantula into your armylist . It can successfully draw a large portion of the enemy's fire until it is killed. And what kind of opponent would complain about one tiny little gimmick unit in all that mass of Infantry?

Right now, I have missile launcher teams built where my autocannons are waiting to be made into Sabre Platforms. I'm certainly open-minded about making the switch, but on the other hand I've been impressed with the versatility of the ML in low-point games. I'm getting the feeling that being able to cover multiple roles is something that is a lot more important in low-point games. I've probably used the frag missiles more often than the krak missiles, to great effect.

Scout is the rule I've been most happy with for them so-far. My infantry squads are set up for a multi-purpose loadout with their heavy weapons, which means they tend to fare a bit better when stationary. Scout gave me a lot of options for playing the mid-field objectives. Gunslingers certainly didn't hurt to roll both times, giving me double-tapping at 24".

You know, that's really not a bad idea. I don't have any plans for the heavy bolters I have, and I could probably make something which could serve as a Tarantula, a Sabre Platform, or a Heavy Weapons Team if I stick some guardsmen on the base. It really is tough for just 15 points apiece, and I'm not going to have my heavy support slots filled. I'll definitely consider it!
