Subject: Shade BRIGHTENING the model?

So I got around to prime (last bit of my Chaos Black) and basecoat (Caliban Green Spray) my first Vindicator. Thinking some shadeing before highlighting might help, I applied some Biel-Tan Green to the recesses. Didn't smother the entire vehicle in it, since I didn't to have to rego over it with Caliban later for the edge highlights.
After letting it dry and coming bad I found a quite nasty surprise...
In some places, quite a lot actually,it dried very bright and nearly WHITE.
I have no fething clue what gak is going on here... Suffice to say, I'm not happy with it, not at all. The Shade is not that old, bought it maybe.. 2 months at most ago.
Anyone got an idea what is going wrong here? Did it spoil already?

I know there where quite a few reports of nuln oil turning white when it was applied too thickly. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the same issue as that as it's probably the same acrylic medium at its core.
I'm switching over to oil washes because of all the nasty reports of nuln oil turning white.

I've had it turn white before but only when thinned with water. :(

well that is.... bad. pretty bad. Will try to cover it up with a thin layer of Caliban and reapply it, unthinned as before, thinly... But JC, that is some bullgak right there.

Yeah, but I used the exact same pot for 2 tactical squads without issue... it prolly STARTED ok and then went bad. I think I smothered the tacs righteously all over...
I'm a get a new pot and try it.

I've had multiple pots of black do this to me, personally I think the thing to do in this situation is do what you can to fix that model and find a better wash for the next batch.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Just went and got me a new pot and covered the bright areas with a thin layer of Caliban Green.
I'm trying to mythbust whats happening, will edit the results in here once its dry.
Edit: Well it seems to be a combination of too think a layer and a spoiled pot.
The new one does its job, even if I smother the recess with it, while the old one goes bright. A VERY thin layer of the old, spoiled pot still does work somewhat, but it's definately gone bad.

well.. either my new pot spoiled as well or my previous assumption is plain wrong. On my next vehicle, which I was really careful applying the shade, it happened again.
I'm sorely angry now.
What the heck is this? Is tipping a rivet on a rhino with a shade already "too thick"? Brushing over with a size 2 brush on the viewports?
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

As I said before the only times it has ever happened to me is when I have a wet brush or add water. Try using a totally dry brush before you apply it. Works for me...

You, good sir, single handedly saved my model and spared me loads of angry rants.
I reapplied the shade, and, while still a bit blotchy from the "undershade", it worked.

That could be the issue, or it could be that the wash is not shaken up enough. Sometimes the matting agent separates and can make the white splotches you are experiencing.
